3.5*

Butcher & Blackbird is a romance between two serial killers who hunt other serial killers—which sounds exactly like something I’d love. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed romances before where a female serial killer is driven by revenge tied to her trauma, and I was hoping for more of that here.

While that’s Blackbird’s original motivation, the actual hunts we see feel very detached and impersonal, which made the kills less satisfying emotionally.

The romance itself was definitely steamy, and I liked their connection through their shared darkness—but it never really felt swoon-worthy to me. I wanted more emotional depth, more real intimacy beyond the physical.

The plot was pretty straightforward, and the twist was easy to see coming. I was never really on the edge of my seat. I didn’t cry. I didn’t swoon. It just lacked the emotional punch I was hoping for.

That said, it was still a solid read overall, and I’m curious enough that I might pick up the next book—especially to see what happens between Sloane’s best friend Lark and Rowan’s brother Lachlan. ]]>

Book 1 starts out with a human female being brutally handled and ALMOST being raped

Book 2 starts out with the human female being repeatedly gang raped in every orifice to the point that she's puking up their sperm.

Now, there is ZERO, and I mean ZERO, reasons for that shit to happen in any book, especially a romance. We already have that happen to us in real life; we don't need it in fantasy as well. But aside from the triggering factor, which the author was clearly going for, it's unoriginal. Seriously, she took the SAME situation from the first book, and instead of learning anything and growing in her writing, she just took the scenario from book one and made it a million times more gag-worthy. That's not literature. There wasn't anything else she could think of to move the story? Nothing? Strange, because I have read dozens of books without rape in them, and they are fantastic with lots of plot twists, drama, and hold-your-breath moments.

Aside from the gang rape with cum vomit, the book also sucked because the first few chapters, which should have taken days or even weeks, are written in such a way that it's only hours. It is SO poorly written it is cringe-worthy. There was no build-up, no setting, and no description (other than the cum belly); it would have been utterly confusing if I hadn't read the first book before this one. The first book was like a person desperate to get their story out and publish a book. This book was like someone who had previously published a book and decided to throw another one out in 1 week after writing it on their phone.

I have lost all respect for this author and won't be giving them a second chance"
