I’m thinking, the only thing that excuses this book for being this weird and incomprehensible is the cultural tidbits from our favorite culture—Japan!

If you took out the philosophical French-speaking kamikaze pilot, the maid cafe with creepy salarymen, the bathhouses where everyone’s naked (even the old flabby grandmas?), and the god-forbid “poetry on the deathbed� that’s just a single character (!) —how awesome. I’m tripping over myself in my rush to have that character tattooed.

“生� out of all things. It reminds me of a beer ad. (� meaning beer on tap in many modern contexts)

Again, I don’t think anyone should get away with confusing people on such a scale, just because they think they’re being “zen�. If you switched out all the zens in this book with “mindfulness� or “meditation� or even “pondering on the flimsiness and flakiness of time� everyone would get the picture painfully clear. I just want everyone to quit it with the zen thing.
