"it’s like the hunger games meets the uglies series but GAY and personally for me that’s a dream! love the prose, love the vivid setting, love the lesbians.

i do wish the romance had been a little more flushed out. it felt a little bit like we went from murder girls to lovers in the blink of an eye—and to be fair, i do think that can be a bit of an issue with standalone stories! but all in all this was a delightful, sorrowful, hauntingly beautiful read "

Somehow, I found this book both very fun and kind of disappointing?

I really loved the premise/worldbuilding -- it was so vibrant, so unique, so quirky, and I really thought the writing itself was excellent. But I also feel like there was more we could have gotten from these characters and this story if so much page space wasn't wasted on the narrator's meandering and slapstick side tangents. Perhaps I would have enjoyed them more if I was more well-versed in this universe (from my understanding, the narrator is someone present in other books), but even as a cozy fantasy, this fell a little flat for me.

I would also take issue with this being classified as an adult fantasy -- I would definitely place this at a middle school/early high school reading level and above, which is FINE, just not what I was expecting.

tl;dr -- I appreciate this book for what it is, but it's just wasn't my favorite cup of tea.

I enjoyed this so much -- I love when books have a setting that also feels like a main character? And the tension between Effy and Preston, ugh I LOVE them. So curious about the ending and next book as well.

The explanation/reveal felt a bit... convenient and read a bit like an info dump for what was an otherwise well-paced story, but [shrug emoji] still a great story and really beautifully written.
