They all said this was her masterpiece: and they were right. I couldn’t stop thinking about it the whole time I was reading it. Staring at the mirror thinking about it while brushing my teeth level. Laying in bed thinking about it.

There are so many layers: I can see why people write essays and literal books about this book. I want to pick it apart in an English class and discuss themes and parallels and references and author choice and what we read from it. “A modern classic gets thrown around a lot: this one is really truly meant.

might come back and put a review of the plot and themes eventually but too busy thinking about it right now. ]]>

3.5. Confusing introduction to the worldbuilding especially over audiobook, but I am a sff fan and I do love piecing things together from context. The magic and plot was fine but the real joy in this book was the way it captured the coming out and other pieces of trans experience. Not wanting to rock the boat, not wanting to change anything, conflicting societal and cultural reasons why you didn’t, and weighing growing up as one gender with trying to belong to another. On the other hand the storytelling vibes went a little overboard and I say this as a poetic writing sicko. ]]>

The mid-est of the megamorphs. Fun scenes, like the pool scene, the infamous trash can scene, and the first instances of morphing midair. Other than that it’s mostly just a normal book. weird new alien villain, captured! Escape.then figure out how to beat the villain. Started strong ended weak ]]>

First half is pretty much a wash. Ax in human morph is juvenile humor that no longer does much for me. Marco captures the horror of the lobster more than the ant, actually, which is wild because the ant is the one that haunts the group and is brought up again and again. Marco's meaningful notes on the other characters were very good, though. And the last three chapters were quite moving, especially the interaction with his dad. Still, overshadowed by the beginning bits. ]]>

As always, beautiful prose, lovely metaphors. Didn’t grip me as much as Time War but still a nice short story. And even better news, there’s apparently a short story collection upcoming! Psyched, every short story of hers I end up finding in a collection or whatever is always amazing

The woodcuts were very pretty too. Bring back images in fiction books! ]]>
