Really interesting and moving novel in verse. I listened to it, and I would recommend experiencing the book in this way. It has a rhythm that works with the truncated and unfinished thoughts of the characters—and really the way we all think at times. Nice imagery. Compelling story and characters. It’s about 2 hours long, so listen to the interview with the author who also reads the book. Urban. Poetic. Refreshing despite the, at times, grim content. ]]>

A brilliant book. Someone compared Keegan to Chekov. This book proves it. A young girl stays with neighbors while her mother prepares for another child in an already large Irish family. Yearning and fulfillment are beautifully embraced. ]]>

A compelling psychological thriller that offers some quoted material from classic psychologists and psychotherapists like Freud. Not too much, so don’t worry that it’s a scholarly tome disguised as a thriller. It’s definitely a mystery, and it will keep you guessing. Several of the characters are in the art and theatre world, so that’s fun, too. ]]>

An interesting historical fiction about a midwife in 18th century Maine. Based on Martha Ballard, the novel inspires me to read the Pulitzer-prize winning bio. Some of the plot devices are a bit far-fetched and there are times the midwife’s relationship with her husband comes close to Harlequin style romance, but overall the book is compelling. Might be best read in the summer when fictional cold days and nights would be more appealing. ]]>

Best read over time, not as a “novel. Offers insights into life based on her own experiences. Many are moving, but I liked John Greene’s Anthropocene or Strayed’s Tiny Beautiful Things better. Brett wrote these for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, so it was fun to see all the Cleveland references. And it’s always nice to see Jesuit’s and alcoholics treated positively! ]]>
