I’m wavering between 3 and 4 stars because this was a solid 3.5 star read. I’m selecting 3 stars because I think my affinity for the normal gossip podcast made me biased to like this more than the actual book did.

Kelsey is a really good author. Her writing is very readable and fun with a strong voice. I wanted to keep going. I never felt like the book bogged down. That being said, this felt kind of like a podcast in that it never really got deep into one topic. There are separate chapters/essays but they don’t have theses so they kind of loosely meander around ideas. The ideas are interesting but I wish they were given a few pages of intro or conclusion to tie them together and to gossip. It’s kind of like stream of consciousness with well-cited sources.

I would definitely read another book by her. I felt like the chapter about reality TV could have been a book on its own and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Traitors or Survivor. I don’t think all of the chapters hit as hard, but I do think if you like the normal gossip podcast you would really enjoy this book. I read the hard copy but am regretting it - I think audio may have been more fun.

I don’t really want to rate this because I feel like there may be nuance missed in the translation. I have only read a few books translated from Japanese but they have all seemed less wordy than I would expect from them in English. I’m wondering if that means words maybe carry more layered meaning - I know from when I studied Japanese that kanji characters have onyumi and kunyumi meanings, so already certain letters can mean two things. So I’m wondering if there is implied depth in the original Japanese that doesn’t make it to the English translation? Otherwise, the idea is interesting and the stories are almost emotional but then fall flat to me. I would read more by this author because it feels like there’s just nuance that I’m not aware of and maybe if I were more familiar I’d get it more? Anyway, I liked it and think there’s a lot of room for interesting conversation and discussion.
