It’s a mostly engaging and well written book that is occasionally bogged down by curious narrative decisions and what seems to me to be a recurrent glibness and flippancy about times and events of great human suffering. The city’s willingness to hold to its fascist past is also more than lightly troubling especially with the resurgence of fascism and its deformed children world wide, most definitely including in Italy. It’s still a good library read that I enjoyed on paper.

Profoundly difficult subject matter, profoundly challenging ideas about the Holocaust and the nature of Hitler and Nazism, written in a humane but unflinching and profoundly erudite manner. This is a book for all time and especially these times. This gets my highest recommendation; just be ready because this is a work that demands emotional and intellectual engagement.
