Jasper Fforde doesn't need meta fiction, it seems. After reading both the Thursday Next and Jack Spratt books, it was good to see him try something that didn't rely on the intentional triggering of tropes.

That said... Eh. It fell flat. The jokes didn't really sing, the characters seemed broad, and the plot was a bit deus ex machina at the end.
