"I taught A Wizard of Earthsea to my creative writing students this semester and they seemed frustrated, calling the novel “boring� and “plotless.� A lot of their objections seemed to boil down to this: Ursula K Le Guin is allergic to external conflict. Despite the setting of epic fantasy, all the battles in the Earthsea books are fought within the hearts of the characters. to a certain type of reader, I can see how irritating that might be.

To me, the first 60 pages or so of this novel were a bit of a slog but then it became so intense and harrowing and all that shit with what is essentially just a series of conversation scenes between two characters. It’s amazing that’s she’s able to provoke that kind of response in me, and how much she’s able to do, just with a series of simple dialogue scenes, and by spending so much time grounding me in the character of Tenar.

This is not only a great book, but such an interesting direction for a sequel—Tenar is not just a “new protagonist,� but a foil to Ged, our old protagonist. Because of her unique perspective, she can’t help but recontextualize everything about book one, and how we look at / read it. GG Le Guin you’ve done it again "

If you're only going to read one manga, it should be this one. It's just perfect in every way... like the perfect example of what manga can and should be. I'm so glad I peer pressured the kids into reading this for manga club lmaoooo
