I really enjoyed this. It was frustrating, baffling, intriguing, depressing, and somehow still hopeful. I really had to wrestle with my own desire for answers and not let that impact how I engaged with the story. I could have read a whole other book on this world and how we got here. I’m very impressed with Harpman’s ability to craft a gripping story that really leaves you with more questions than answers. And to create characters that are so human, even in a world seemingly completely devoid of humanity. This small novel has given me so much to think about and I had to take a day before I could even give a rating or write a review. I enjoyed every single one of these stories and I feel like that’s a major feat for a short story collection. I loved all the magical realism elements and how they were all so different but still made the collection feel very cohesive. The Prospectors and Black Corfu were my favorites.
