Alix just got married. But she keeps having a scary dream where her ex-fiancé kills her new husband. In the dream, she actually thanks the killer, which upsets her. What's going on here?
wow, I loved this one a lot!
I probably listened to it already, as it's part of the Witness for the Prosecution collection, but I had no memory of it.
I love the gothic atmosphere of it, and that the suspense and ambiguity about what's going on are still present at the very end.
It's even more powerful if you are familiar with Philomel's identity in Greek mythology. There's even a reference to nightingales!

bookshelves: classicsclub, read-in-2025
MY VERDICT:
A masterful exploration of obsession, emotional turmoil, and intellectual passion, in a complex mentorship with an enigmatic teacher.

This was my first book by Stefan Zweig, and I am quite impressed. I definitely want to read more by him.
Wow, what a fabulous psychological study of characters!

In his excellent introduction (covering Zweig’s life), George Prochanik says that Zweig wrote this novel when he was at the height of his career. It certainly shows, in the way he can present the evolution of emotions and the psychological world.
The original title in German is actually Confusion of Emotions.
