I am not surprised that this is the lowest rated book in the series. It’s just that nothing really happens.

The first half of this book is all about Elayne’s political posturing to be the Queen of Andor. There was no real intrigue or profound moments. It was boring.

The second half of the book is primarily about the constant quarreling among the Aes Sedai. At this point in the series, this storyline has become unbearably tiresome to me. For crying out loud, these women can live 200-300 years and they are behaving like a bunch of teenage mean girls. I just can’t stand it anymore. Not only are they completely failing at showing that they’ve gained any wisdom with their extended lifespan, but they are also completely failing at showing that they are worthy of power they have. The white tower is beginning to ruin the series for me. They need to get their sh*t together.

Rand, Mat and Perrin are mostly missing in this book. Perrin is still trying to find his wife. That’s about it.

This was a big disappointment for me. There are only 4 books left in the series. There needs to be more happening to bring this series to a close. ]]>

3.5 Stars. This was my least favorite of the Hunger Games trilogy. I didn’t like the way that the Capitol was turned into basically another Hunger Games. It felt too repetitive and illogical to me. It also wound up feeling completely unnecessary based on the way the battle ends. Just my opinion.

What I did like was the way the author developed Coin, the leader of the rebellion, into a villain in her own right. I didn’t see that coming until the last third of the book, and I didn’t not suspect it would go as far as it did.

I also really liked the conclusion to Katniss and Peeta’s stories. For me this was a very satisfying ending. ]]>

I did really enjoy this 2nd book, but not quite as much as the 1st book. The reason is because it is basically the same story. The beginning and ending are a little different, but the main Hunger Games event is the same idea.

What this book provides in terms of new material is primarily the beginning of the rebellion as the capital’s control of the districts becomes tenuous. Katniss becomes the unwilling face of the rebellion because of her choices at the end of the first book. For the most part, Katniss is kept in the dark. Because the book is written from Katniss’s POV, we readers are also mostly kept in the dark.

I’m not a fan of the love triangle storyline because I hate this trope in general. I understand Katniss feeling torn between Peeta and Gale. Gale represents a loving friendship and normal life that Katniss genuinely wants to return to. However, she isn’t the same person as she was before the Hunger Games. She has shared an experience with Peeta that Gale will never be able to relate to. Gale represents her past while Peeta represents her future. ]]>

Although I have seen all of the original movies, I never got around to reading this series when it first came out. I think it lived up to the hype. It was a quick read and could definitely have been expanded more than it was, but the world, plot and characters were all worth reading. I’m looking forward to finishing the trilogy. ]]>
