overall review of the arc:

They've yanked my soul back into the warrior cats universe again. Eight years since I read book 2 of AVOS, which I remember nothing about, but rated 2 stars in 2017 lol Much has changed and expanded in the universe. Yet it's universal themes, worldbuilding, emotional character arcs, examination of existential questions and violent battle scenes are all still here... and i'm enthralled. How u do this, cat books???
Many a time i have reread the handful of books me and brothers owned: Into the Wild, the Darkest Hour, the fourth apprentice (my fave cover), Crookedstars Promise, and the graystripe manga.
Those were my comfort killer cat books <3 but I sold them back to half price books recently so they're gone forever. 3

After randomly remembering The Valley MAP on YouTube 2 weeks agp, I started watching moonkitti's again and I just wanted to know the lore behind the videos and jokes. So I reread the warriors wiki summaries, with no plans to read the actual books bc I'm far too busy. Or so I thought. A week later I was at my library job and suddenly a patron returned lost stars, book #1 of the broken code. It was a sign from starclan for realzies!!!
Just like that I checked it out, read it on one night, and read the rest of the arcs books on hoopla in 6 days. ~2000 pages. I was a reader possessed by stories of vengeful possessive lost love. Actually that's the plot. Since I read the plot on wiki I knew most of what week's happen but I still devoured this book up!!!

tbh warrior cats books are as good as you take them, while being pretty formulaic. There's flashes of brilliance and deeper themes but all the grown up ass warrior fans who expect smth grand need to lower their expectations lol anyway

Initial thoughts:
the new cover art style which is way more ominous and hyperrealistic than the cute painted fantasy magical covers from before.
new character's dif POVs were well-written. They had distinct voices, iunique plot development, great relationships and family tree connections. Loved it!
Shadowsight's pov was my favorite i think, we get the vision from him, but also his internal struggle when manipulated by ashfur was really interesting. I ultimately thought Shadowsight would become a villain too and die at the end, but i was wrong. I liked Rootsprings pov too, it had a unique struggle and he would discover some very cool powers. Liked his character growth with his dad and how his sense of alienation from the clan developed into self-confidence. Also loved Bristlepaw but she more of the brave warrior archetype until the middle few books where she was a double agent spy pulled btwn a moral gray-area and alienated from her clan. I love her girl boss, kinda reminded me of ivpool povs who I also loved
Great themes: Spirituality and organized religion was a main theme of the series and they handled it pretty dynamically IMO. I always liked how they showed different cat griups' ways of lives is almost like a comparative religions 101 class but with cat religions that vaguely reference Abrahamic, Buddhist, indigenous American folklore. I love the mountain tribes, the sisters, the cats of the park concepts.
And ofcourse it examines how organized religion can be abused and explored to control and harm where rules can be twisted. Examines the question of what does true morality and good versus evil mean? Can you break rules and still be moral good overall?
loved the low key 4th wall breaks where the Erin's basically include fan critiques in dialogue like "Why tf are thunderclap names getting so random" and "why are starclan such cryptic dorks"

Critique:
Some of the dialogue was repetitive and superfluous. Characters explain the same thing 100 times to eachother in like sooo many gatherings, meetings, etc now I know it's for continuity, but it was also obv just to stretch it out into 6 books lol. its ok we devoured them. ]]>
