Me: Moth features two teens who feel like the odd person out in their new school bonding and using each other to escape their negative realities. One lost her whole family in a car wreck while the other is having to endure an abusive step-father. This reminded me of Reservation Dogs in a way, especially when they take a cross-country trip together, and the spiritual Hoodoo and Navajo world becomes as real to them as anything else around them.

The writing style feels experimental and almost poetic. It's also short, which is why I wasn't too mad that what makes the book good happens in the last 5% and makes you have to reflect back on the whole book to reassess how you feel about it. Before that reveal, it was a 3-star book, but the ending upgrades it to 4 stars for me. ]]>

bookshelves: favorites, house-as-a-character, horror
As the book says, it's "a sprawling and bizarre tale about alternate realities, endless labyrinths, ancient evils, and doppelgängers." It's also a book where the house itself is a character..

Eve and Charlie have moved into this house in the Pacific Northwest with the idea of flipping it. One night, a man knocks on the door saying he used to live there and wants to show his family around his old house. Only, they keep making excuses why they can't leave. Suddenly, remembered details about the house and people keep changing -- even names -- making Eve question her sanity and feel like she's in a world where the Mandela effect is very real. Suddenly, the basement seems to be a portal to elsewhere or an alternate reality altogether.

I read this all in one go and am excited to see what future books this author produces. I'd not be sad if he explored this world a little more. ]]>

Never read the first thing one of your favorite authors wrote. This was such a slog. It didn't help that the narrative kept going back and forth through time. It's another book where the house, Rawblood, is a main character. But there's also a vengeful ghost that keeps showing up in each era. Plus, the whole family seems to have a touch of madness. It's memorable, but reading wasn't pleasurable. In the end, I can see why it makes sense for the storyline to be out of order, but I don't have to like it. The book has its merits, but it just wasn't for me. ]]>
