I loved this until I got to the end, which happebed too quickly and with too much unresolved. I can infer a lot - it's shite when books spoon-feed you everything - but there's a difference between inference and an underdeveloped plot (and characters). A beautifully written book let down in the last third for sure! It also grated me that the author chose to go for a z in words like "realised". This was everything I wanted it to be: Gothic, tense, dark, melodramatic, romantic, and written in beautifully rhythmic prose reminiscent of the fairy tales I read as a child. DNF'd because I couldn't connect with the characters, then discovered Cora's linguistics background was pointless because of the way she becomes interpreter to the alien. I really, really wanted this to be 4 or 5 stars, and indeed it was solidly on 4 stars for at least 2/3rds of the book. But it rushed through sooooo much plot in the back of the book and the main character's resolution with her job - and her racist colleagues - was entirely sorted off-page. Which was extremely unsatisfying! I really liked the relationship between the heroine and the hero but his story definitely took over in the back part of the book. Which wasn't a bad thing - his story was compelling - but it shouldn't have been to the detriment of the heroine.
