Normal People by Sally Rooney
"I finally caved. I read the book that everyone has been reading, the book that is responsible for some of the most devastatingly Tumblr-esque quotes to have made their way through my internet experience in the last few years. I guess, like Fleabag, I had put this in a category of things that would either devastate me or not live up to the romance I had created for them in my head.

I can't tell if I loved it or hated it, but I think I spent most of the book just angry at Connell and Marianne. I think in the midst of the complications of my 20s and thinking through what love is, what love is supposed to be, it is so infuriating to see 2 people have the answer, to love one another so absolutely, and still not be able to get it right. Maybe I'm too happy at this moment to truly understand what Rooney was going for, perhaps if I was just off some heartbreaking breakup or in the middle of some awful pining for someone, then I would really know what it is to understand these two characters, to empathize with this love and care they have for each other and yet the awful ways that they seem to harm each other. I like to hope for all of the people that I love--romantically, platonically, familially--I will never harm them in the way that these two seemed to harm one another intrinsically.

For all that I despised about this book, for all that I do not understand about these two characters, I do think it was a beautiful story, and I enjoyed reading it. "

All I really need to say is that this book inspired me to purge unneeded apps from my phone, unsubscribe from all unwanted emails and push notifications, and delete social media apps 😅

But seriously, super well written with thought provoking data and graphs to back up claims- this book does a great job of putting into words what I myself experienced growing up as a member of gen z and what I see happening with my peers and gen alpha. It’s incredibly alarming to see all of the data put together, and reaffirms my dislike for Meta/Tiktok tenfold.

Highly recommend checking this out if you need some hard evidence for why, as our parents alllll said, it really is the phones. ]]>

"Such a cool way to write history. I especially loved the final chapter and the epilogue. "

Anything that has 4 sisters immediately makes me feel all the feels and pulls me right in. This is my first Rebecca Yarros novel outside of the fourth wing series, and I honestly loved it much more than I did any of those books (so far)- even though I also enjoyed those. Her writing style and pacing just fit so well for this kind of family drama/romance in a way that it sometimes hasn’t with the fantasy books (iron flame was a little all over the place, for example). I loved all the characters- they were so well written and had such depth, even the ones that played minor roles, like Hudson’s parents and Everett. The writing in general was so well done, it made me feel re-invigorated abt romance books since I’d been in a bit of a slump not having read a 5 star romance in a little while. I’ll definitely be checking out more of Rebecca Yarros’s romances. ]]>
