Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins
"“Lenore Dove, I love you like all-fire. That’s for always.

This book was so heartbreaking and powerful. My heart is completely shattered for Haymitch. I was completely transported back into this dystopian world from the first page. The plot kept me engaged the entire book and the pacing was perfect. The author’s writing is engaging, poetic, descriptive and magical. This book was also nostalgic for me and it brought me back to when I first read the Hunger Games when I was a teenager. I fell in love with this story just like I loved the first 3 books from years ago. I was glad that this story focused on Haymitch, he deserves to be able to tell his story from his perspective. It shows all the challenges and heartbreak that he went through that made him who he was in the Hunger Games. The characters in this book were very complex and each had their own challenges. I loved Haymitch, he has my heart. I really liked the side characters as well especially Lenore, Maysilee, Wyatt, Ampert and Louella. Haymitch and Lenore’s love story was so beautiful and devastating. I loved that Haymitch did his best to fight for Lenore with everything that he had. I cried so much at the end, it’s going to take me a while to recover from the heartbreak. This book had so many important messages such as survival, rebellion, standing up for what you believe in, family, and love. This book will stay in my heart for a long time.

“The moment our hearts shattered. It belongs to us.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves dystopian young adult books, complex and relatable characters, and awesome writing.

“They will not use my tears for their entertainment"

Babel by R.F. Kuang
"This book is beautiful. I don’t mean that in the soppy, unoriginal way. It’s genuinely really well written and there’s so much thought and time that has been taken to create this.

For most of the book I weighed in my mind what I disliked, and I concluded I would likely give this a 4/5. There were too many translation paragraphs which, while interesting at first, bored me to no end. Book II & III I disliked because there seemed to be little dialogue, the characters still didn’t feel completely fleshed out and I was unsure when the story would finally pick itself up.

I can’t explain how much Book IV turned this all around for me. Suddenly everything I had read led up to this moment and the story was suddenly fast paced and exciting. Robin is nothing like the boy he was at the start of the novel, or further, at the start of Oxford. His character growth is honestly astounding and I think that’s one of my favourite things I’ve taken away.

My only quarrel now is I wish Griffin had been given more screen time (I get he’s all mysterious and what not, but he was so unique it would have been interesting.)

I promised myself I would not shed a tear for this book (because everyone else seemed to be) but alas I could not keep that promise. I really loved this."
