Ali Smith does child narrators so well. Gliff is Smith does dystopia- light on specific world building in such a way that makes it deeply unsettling, like the action is all taking place just in the periphery and you can quite penetrate what exactly is going on. At its heart it’s a classic kind of story of insiders and outsiders in a world not dissimilar to our own. It didn’t soar to Smith’s greatest heights for me but I always love to be submerged in her unique voice, and here her love of language shone not just as a narrative voice but as a warning to us all about the power of language to shape our perceptions of the world.
