This book has received a number of iffy reviews so have delayed reading it for some time. I’m so glad I read it. So unique - the setting is Paris right before and during WW2 told from many different perspectives and formats - letters home to parents, journals, a fictional book. At the beginning there are a lot of characters to keep straight��.so many that proved to be so brave. A different view on what living in occupied Paris was like, and a hypothesis on why people do what they do, good and bad, and what drives them to do so.

Some of the characters are loosely based on true people and the book was inspired by a photo the author saw.

Probably not for everyone given other reviews but I really enjoyed it.

I’m glad this book was selected - there is just so much less out there about the civil war in Missouri and Kansas and this book helped me understand it more. We drive through Missouri annually on the way home for the holidays and there is just something “different�� about the state��.an independent vibe. It resonates more after this book! This is a tough story - I think this is likely a very realistic depiction of the horrors of the war which seemed to be more rogue in Missouri. It is in ways bleak, very raw, yet ends with hope and it all has some humor sprinkled in here and there. Some of the events are real and any book that has me googling to learn more about events and people is a good one.

The book is a story of the civil war in Missouri and Kansas - not the typical stories. It’s a tough story - I think this is likely a very realistic depiction of the horrors of the war which seemed to be more rogue in Missouri. It is in ways bleak, very raw, yet ends with hope and it all has some humor sprinkled in here and there. Some of the events are real and any book that has me googling to learn more about events and people is a good one.
