Loved this book! We are so close to this sort of technology being this accessible and Sike explored the implications with great depth. I find the comparisons to Sally Rooney and Kazuo Ishiguro to be spot on. The Sally Rooney game out in the ennui of the modern young adulthood and relationship dialogues. The Ishiguro came through with the intelligent science fiction commentary and subtle sweeping prose. I feel so lucky to have a new author to watch. Great debut! ]]>

Non-things by Byung-Chul Han
"Ugh! I agree with many of the points Byung-Chul Han makes in this but so much of it is presented in reductive statements with zero intention of actually engaging with the digital worldmaking and communities he dismisses. A lot of the philosophical stuff tracks yet it feels so out of touch with how and why people actually gravitate towards the virtual. Arguments are presented with little interrogation of the author’s own stance and ideas, so it ultimately all feels like a relentless (repetitive!) procession of statements backed by little to no actual discussion. Not to mention all the false dichotomies and the glaring absence of any sort of guiding ethic! Call me a silly little 23-year-old but the section on selfies is laughable. I’m not sure how many of my issues with the tone are down to the English translation but I had a hard time finishing this one"

I was initially very excited to pick this slim book up, but soon was disappointed by its content.
While I appreciate the dichotomy of “things (tangible) and “non-things (information) as a framework for understanding the way we are changing in how we relate to the world, Han’s analysis falls flat after his strong opening.
He has a variety of uninvestigated assumptions such as his insistence that truth is “characterized by duration and stability. I see how this can feel intuitive to the unsophisticated author, but I expect more from Han in a philosophical work to defend this claim and anticipate counter arguments.
I have more criticisms, but I ended up being most frustrated by the “bitter old man that kept seeming to come through with his criticisms of technology from Airbnb and e-books and selfies.
The idea Han uses to close the first chapter, that people would be lulled into laziness with a Universal Basic Income, almost made me rate this lower, but I do think Byung-Chul Han is a thinker who has more potential and his brilliance shines even when he is off the mark.

The writing also felt stilted and choppy. Needs a better editor ]]>
