I really enjoyed this Dystopian nightmare of a book. I love how this is different in the sense that at first glance, things do seem to be for the better (resistance to illness, ageing etc), scratch the surface a little and you soon find out that the total freedom of the populace is just smoke and mirrors for a population under total control. Comparisons have been made with 1984 and I get that there are certain similarities (this is a dystopian novel, after all) but there are a lot of aspects that definitely did not happen in that novel and would have been stamped out immediately wherein in this novel they are expected.

It is hard to believe that this was written in the 1930s, the scope of imagination, coupled with the projected advances are once again art imitating life in it's purest sense and some people would no doubt jump at the chance to act like these people as the norm, without consequence, mindlessly going about their pitiful existences.

If you are on the fence about reading this, give it a try. I left it a long time before reading this but I now see why this is regarded so highly ]]>

What a great collection of weird and macabre tales. There is no dispute that the author is one of the undisputed masters of horror fiction, with stories spanning decades that are still as popular today as ever. All of the classics are here, but there are some really surprising shorter tales that you will encounter which are just as good, and many have a wicked streak of humour. One thing that I will say is that I didn't like everything here. On more than one occasion I had no idea what the author was trying to say and, in a couple of stories, was totally bored to the point of thinking of skipping them altogether. Thankfully, these are few and far between, and I won't mention the names as you may well feel differently yourselves.

If you have never read Poe, you need to. If you are a fan and don't have this collection, it is definitely worth buying / borrowing. ]]>
