As a lesbian, this book was embarrassing. I’m not criticizing the writing or the story! I'm actually criticizing myself and other lesbians. I wish it were less accurate. I wish the characters were not a vivid representation of the annoying tendencies I’ve experienced in myself and others.

Have many of us developed non-platonic feelings for some straight woman and then willingly made pointless, self-destructive decisions in some angsty attempt to feel close? Ugh. Yes.

Have we confused someone who seems fun and weightless as being an actual decent human despite plenty of evidence to the contrary? Yes.

Do we have delusions of grandeur that allows us to think being involved in any situation is the same thing as being responsible for that situation? Gross, but yes.

Each of the characters is bit of a caricature of flawed personality traits and that is frustrating to witness. The melodrama. The self-deprecation. The hyper-independence. The codependency. At first, I thought it was just me. Like “people hate in others what they see in themselves.� But I talked to some of my Sapphic friends & my partner and it seems others might relate to that as well.

It’s beautiful prose though. And great scene setting. I could have done with less repetition, but overall, it’s a good, albeit frustrating, read.

Bea sucks though. She is truly the worst.
