Intriguing concept but overall weak in terms of world building, characters and story. The book tries to be too many things at once (fantasy, class criticism, murder mystery) and while I was interested, I was overall left disappointed. While I read #1 I did not remember a lot from it which turned out to be a problem for #2. The amount of random characters on top of old characters overwhelmed me, I found Charming to be insufferable most of the time, I disliked the 'romance' if you can call it that, and the neverending references to fairy tales were not quirky but annoying. As a German speaker I also found the usage of nonsense German words very off-putting.

I skim-read large parts after seriously trying to get into the book. Sorry.

It's been a whole since I read the last Wheel of Time book, so I had a hard time getting into this story. It's also the first one where Brandon Sanderson was involved, so I had high hopes. My main issue with the Jordan books is that I dislike the majority of the characters and this problem persists in this installment: Rand, Perrin and Mat are mostly annoying and seem to be unable of any meaningful character development. The inability of the characters to communicate with each other is stunning, especially Rand and Nynaeve were exasperating. Intriguing in its mysteriousness but overall too bleak and unnecessarily violent for my liking. "The Library at Mount Char" takes freely from fantasy, religion, myth, literature etc. but I found the ending disappointingly predictable. I did not like any of the characters, I found the violence boring and unnecessary, the entire set-up unnecessarily cruel. Nice conclusion to the duology.
