A Monster by Violet by Laura Wake
"As somebody with a young baby myself, I don't have time to leave reviews anymore, but I just have to for this one, even just to disclose one thing: the only reason this book recieved two stars is because I reserve one star ratings for books I didn't finish. I had this misfortune of reading this in full.

As a disclaimer, I listened to the audiobook (again, small baby) and the actress reading it was its saving grace, and she did do a very impressive job with what she was given, including making bizarre swaps in tenses and person actually decipherable. The author, however, decided it was a good idea to write flashbacks and and epilogue in first person, and the main story in third, with random diary entries for good measure. The further into the book I got, the more I was convinced I couldn't write a review as I became certain the author must be very young, self published, and it was possibly some sort of fanfic that got adapted After/Fifty Shades style, because it reads exactly like fan fiction: the story is a long line of events that lead nowhere, then-I-did-this-and-then-I-did-that, introductions of meaningless characters, random genital shrivelling smut scenes, and a trip around the Isle of Wight (with so much unnecessary and incorrect detail). However, upon learning that the author is a grown adult who's seemingly lived a full life and actually has the nerve to teach this to others, I feel I can be honest.

There is no actual plot. Or consequences. Or characters with reason, motive, personality (though the audiobook actress did very well, again) or character traits. It might be the worst book I've finished in a long time, if not ever. Trying to convince me that this story wasn't made up on the spot and written as the author went would be impossible, especially as random background events and trauma dumps get thrown in with no foreshadowing, reason, relevance, or consequence. It's pure 2014 edgy tumblr fanfic."
