Erasure is fine but cements my self-understanding; I do not enjoy reading mouthpiecy novels.

Here’s my best shot at explaining it to myself. First off, the book reveals nothing you wouldn’t imagine if you had to explain the story to someone having only read a blurb. This is a general feeling I get when I’m reading a story that has a point to make, but whose point is better made in the 90-minute movie adaptation that follows.

With regard to this book in particular, I couldn’t shake the “meta� feeling that the novel is self-referential—it’s a book about an academic scholar who sells out by writing a highly commercial best-seller that gives white America something they seem to want to read. Is that the secret joke about Erasure as well?
