A daily log from a Marine Biology collection trip from Monterey where Steinbeck lived (and wrote about the Ed Rickets featured here), this was a difficult but not unpleasant read.
The first 80 pages are a sort of eulogy for Rickets, his great friend, who died tragically, which casts a melancholy pall over the rest. Steinbeck seamlessly melds this scientific log with both a character study of the men on the ship and serious philosophical argumentation.
