I read Moon of the Crusted Snow which I've been meaning to get to for a long time. It's an end of the world tale told from a reservation in northern Canada. Neat interplay of modern and traditional technology, and white and first nation culture, with a creepy sense of dread over the whole thing. Sometimes I felt like the dialogue and characters were a little lifeless, but the pace, plot and concept made it worth the read. ]]>

bookshelves: listened-while-distracted
I listened to this one and was glad I did - the narrator was both generally good and also confidently pronounced the Anishinaabemowin that I would have stumbled on in reading myself. There are striking strengths and a couple weaknesses to the book so it's hard to rate. I'm not sure the author's strength is dialogue, but there's lots in the book. It felt a little stilted somehow, or maybe forced, like the author thought it needed to be there. First among the book's high points is the prevailing, creepy tone that the author establishes early which carries on through the book. The pacing is also great and interesting. There are some really lovely detailed passages of small events, sometimes dream sequences too, and then there are long jumps and skips in time. It's not uncommon for a chapter to end on some creepy note only to the have next one pick up days or weeks later. This keeps the pace moving while creating some uncertainty in the reader. Definitely worth reading. ]]>

Picked up, took a break, finished. It's easy to take a break in the first half of this one. The second half accelerates like crazy, but just as the action seems poised to commence, the book ends. It ends on a chapter break, basically, and that's not too cool. ]]>

Outstanding continuation of the even better Bear and the Nightingale. Looking forward to the next volume.

On re-read: I now liked this one better than the first. A lot of the groundwork laid in book one bears fruit in this one. Even more interesting, the fairy tales that Vasya has been interacting with, now also intertwine with history. Lots to say about how harrowing existence was in the middle ages especially as a woman. ]]>

The dishonor of losing the Quick Burn battle to those Discord heathens must not continue.

The LA Times announced their winners of the 2024 book prizes with the Science Fiction, Fantasy & Speculative Fiction award going to Kelly Link, for The Book of Love.

Interesting choice because the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ reviews are decidedly mixed. ]]>
