Y'all, this was maybe one of the worst romances I've read unfortunately :(

I was SO on-board for the corny Hallmark vibes. The premise was a little silly and fun, but I was here for it, and I wasn't expecting anything fantastic, but by the end I was fully hate-reading. The main character is a hot mess, she needs to get it together. All of her problems are arbitrarily self-imposed and her hang-ups make no sense. The love interest is pretty one-dimensional, I think he's mostly there to fulfill a fantasy. That'd be fine, but the book was constantly trying to frame him like this deep, nuanced character and he simply wasn't.

It tried to handle the subject of addiction with tact and I think it simply fell flat for me, which was rough.

The main character, who was normally pretty self-assured, would randomly get unbelievably jealous and territorial over the slightest provacation. Also, cw: sexual assault: [spoilers removed]

Also, the contrivance in the third act that splits our couple apart so that they can come back for the HEA: it was about the stupidest thing ever. Genuinely actually so stupid. They tried to do the whole you lied to me! thing but over such a non-issue that it actually made me so angry.

Throughout the book, Evie white-knights for all the people in this idyllic village, she swoops in and solves homophobia, extreme abuse, racism, blood feuds, and it's very silly. I get that the idea is that she's become part of the town and has changed the community for the better, but it felt a little over-the-top by the third or fourth major issue she magically solves in the span of three months. Honestly, also, it makes her personal problems seem really petty by comparison, especially in the aforementioned third-act-contrivance. [spoilers removed]

Also, the book's attempts to reference Shakespeare were so underbaked and disappointing. I would normally give props for making the attempt because the author did try, but I think it needed more development.

Y'all, I didn't wanna be a hater with this one. I really didn't. I was fully on-board for a cheesy, corny, saccharine-sweet Hallmark romance book, but it was just so stupid that it broke my suspension of disbelief entirely. ]]>
