If there’s one thing I can always be sure of, it’s that Suzanne Collins will never disappoint me. I was doubtful when they first announced this book � We already know what happened to Haymitch, why would we need a whole book? I said.

But Suzanne really crafted a masterpiece. Haymitch has always been a top-tier character for me, but now that I understand him on a deeper level, I love him even more.

Every other page had me gasping, in shock, and just� reeling.

I loved seeing so many familiar faces from the original Hunger Games trilogy � it really felt like everything came full circle. Ever since reading Catching Fire, I’ve wondered how Haymitch got involved in the plot to save Katniss. This book gave me so much clarity about that, and much more.

The commentary on propaganda was masterfully done � disturbingly relevant to our world today.

Young Haymitch was so pure, and I just wanted him to be safe. What really stood out to me were the parallels between him and Katniss � both losing their fathers at a young age, both having a younger sibling to care for, and both possessing this intense compassion.

Maybe we'll lose, but we're sure making a lot of people proud back home.

Maysilee was my favorite character in Sunrise on the Reaping. Her development was incredible � she was so unapologetically herself, and I admired her for it. Her scenes with Drusilla had me laughing out loud. She reminded me so much of Johanna � that same “don’t give a f***� energy. I respected her deeply. And even though I knew how her story would end, it still tore me to shreds.

You got to hand it to Maysilee, nobody's using footage of her for propagander.

There were so many other standout characters who became dear to me: Wyatt, Ampert, Louella�

Seeing Mags, Plutarch and Wiress again was a gift, and now we understand so much more about the versions of them we meet later on. The way this book fills in those gaps is so satisfying � and so painful.

There were truly horrific things in this book, especially the storyline of Lou Lou/Louella’s. Snow is irredeemable. And it breaks my heart to think he most likely did things like that in every Games � to other Victors, Tributes and their families.

Every year we let them herd us into their killing machine. Every year they pay no price for the slaughter. They just throw a big party and box up our bodies like presents for our families to open back home.

Like I said, going into this, we knew how it would end � that Haymitch would lose everything. But that didn’t soften the blow. Those last few chapters were piercing. They’ll haunt me.

We never really recover, just move on the best we can.

The epilogue was the perfect close. I’m so, so glad Suzanne decided to publish this book.

And maybe it won't be realized today, maybe not in our lifetime. Maybe it will take generations. We're all part of a continuum.
