I listened to an abridged version, narrated by Richard Armitage, at the suggestion of a friend. This story was great fun! A bit over the top at times, but a good time from start to finish. One day I'll come back and read the full novel. ]]>

4/11/25: reread this on a whim, and it was just as delightful as I remembered. It was fun to read it again after reading books 2 and 3 to see the tiny crumbs of those stories being laid out from the very start.

I'm so glad that Keira Dominguez (and her books) have blessed my life.
.
This book is a departure from her usual magical regency and it is just perfection.
.
The writing, the dialog, the characters, all of it, just perfect.
.
Knowing what she was going through, personally, while she wrote this book makes it even sweeter. ]]>

I read this for my Nutrition class this semester. I think I would have liked it better if I had read it straight through, rather than jumping around from section to section each week, but it was still an interesting read.

I've been troubled by the rise of the wellness industry in recent years, particularly the wellness influencers peddling supplements and preying on desperate and vulnerable people. It's gross.

This book really tries, and mostly succeeds to separate body appearance from innate worth. It strives to drive home that what someone's body looks like is the least interesting thing about them, that using body size as a metric of health is flawed, and that constantly pivoting to the next diet causes more health problems than the alleged "obesity epidemic" has caused when you look at overall health. Anti-diet attempts to foster a peace between us and food, giving permission to eat when we're hungry, to advocate for ourselves at the doctor, and to stop wasting time worrying about what our bodies look like.

"The average weight in the U.S. may have crept up a little from 1985 to 1998, but that was hardly a mass outbreak of disease. Instead, the "obesity epidemic" is really a moral panic that has a lot more to do with diet culture's skewed beliefs about weight than with any actual threat to public health." ]]>

This was an incredible reading/listening experience. This book had me in tears and reconfirmed exactly why I want to be involved in public health. I've been feeling despondent about the dismantling of public health agencies in the US, but this book is a powerful reminder that every person is valuable, that disease eradication is a multi-faceted conundrum, and of the power that resides in each person who tries to make the road easier for those who come after.

You cannot call yourself pro-life while hoarding resources from the less fortunate. You cannot call yourself pro-life while putting a price on disease treatment and deciding it is too expensive to spend the money. You cannot call yourself pro-life while defending, endorsing, or cheering on the dismantling of public health agencies. You just can't.

"What's different now from 1804 or 1904 is that tuberculosis is curable, and has been since the mid-1950s. We know how to live in a world without tuberculosis. But we choose not to live in that world."

"It reminded me, that when we know about suffering, when we are proximal to it, we are capable of extraordinary generosity. We can do and be so much for each other. But only when we see one another in our full humanity. Not as statistics or problems, but as people who deserve to be alive in the world.

"TB in the twenty-first century is not really caused by a bacteria that we know how to kill. TB in the twenty-first century is really caused by those social determinants of health, which at their core are about human-built systems for extracting and allocating resources. The real cause of contemporary tuberculosis, is for lack of a better term, us.

I haven't always enjoyed John Green's fiction, but he is a wonderful and powerful voice for suffering people in both his nonfiction writing and in his advocacy.

This book is raw and difficult to read at times. It's also something I would recommend to anyone and everyone. ]]>

it took me a while to get around to reading this, but it ended up being the perfect book at the perfect time.

I just loved this! I'm still a bit confused about some bits, but that's pretty standard for me with Brandon Sanderson.

The illustrations added so much to an already lovely story.

I loved all of the bits about art and how we determine the value of items and people and ideas.

You should read this, even if you've never read a Brandon Sanderson book before.

"The thing is, everything is useless, intrinsically.  Nothing has value unless we grant it that value. Any object can be worth whatever we decide it to be worth.
And to these two, Yumi's painting was priceless." ]]>

This novella was adorable from start to finish. I loved every bit of it.

I love that it's based on a true story, one that I was also invested in a few months ago!

I got this delightful novella as a freebie for signing up for the author's newsletter. On my Kindle since 2025. ]]>
