bookshelves: mystery, contemporary
This was an absolutely delightful mystery that deserves to rank among the greats. Neely's strong characterization and intriguing layers of mystery culminate in a memorable, riveting, engaging adventure.

Blanche, a Black woman facing an egregious sentence of 30 day's jail time over a bounced check, seizes an opportunity to give the warden the slip and makes a run for it. Disguising herself as a domestic for a rich southern white family is the perfrct place to lay low and figure out how to get out of this mess. Except, this family is not all they seem, and Blanche finds herself in the middle of a multi-homicide, and she might be next.

Oh my god was this a RIDE! I LOVE the characterization of Blanche. She is middle-aged, sassy, and unapologetic about herself, the people around her, and the racism that overshadows her existence in the South.

I saw a couple of reviews that balked at the idea of a woman receiving a jail sentence over a bounced check. As someone who has read quite a lot about American History and the racial inequalities within, this did not at all surprise me that a black woman would be the victim of this level of insanity. Nor did Blanche's actions afterward or her motivations surprise me either. The author was brilliant in capturing a realistic, compelling, and raw character in Blanche.

I listened to the audiobook on Libby and the narrator was simply delightful. I grew up in the south and she nailed the accents, the inflections, the mannerisms, everything. It was *chef's kiss*.

As a domestic, Blanche is largely underestimated by those around her, and is able to piece together clues and gather information undetected. This reminded me of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, and I found it sooooooo so so well done.

I hope Libby has more audiobooks in this series because this has become my new favorite detective series.

If you haven't read this one yet, add it to your tbr asap! ]]>

Oracle of Helinthia by M.J. Pankey
"“Oracle of Helinthia, sequel to “Epic of Helinthia, shows our protagonists facing the consequences from the first book as well as new obstacles and challenges. Lithaneva plays double agent between Helinthia and her father as he escalates his conquest of the island. Gonivein recovers from physical and emotional scars while navigating new waters in her relationship with Kelric. Kelric continues to be the worst. Forluna tries to orchestrate the salvation of Helinthia by arranging a marriage between Lithaneva and the heir of Iptys. Dargos faces betrayal at every turn, and Gadnor is named strategos and must soon adopt a new mantle.
The first book in this series was perfectly adequate (I gave it 3.5 stars), but nothing mind-blowing. I understand now that the first book needed to set everyone up to be where they are at the start of this novel, which is where all the intrigue really takes place. There’s less action here but more pivotal character and plot moments. Each character faces their own individual trials that seem to place them in situations that are only impossible because of their unique flaws or positions, which to me is the mark of excellent writing. As alliances shift and relationships develop, the stakes continue to increase. If you are interested in a Greek mythology-inspired historical fantasy rich with conflict, this is the story for you.

My thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review."
