Whispers of the Storm, book 1 in the Songs of the Damned series, by ZB Steele was one that I was excited for after reading An Inkling of Flame. Little did I know that this book was be my next obsession after binge-reading it over 3 days.

Redlin of the Wolves is recounting the story of his life to an agent of the Archon, Maya. Left by his father for money, Redlin tells the story of how he came to be feared as he wields power, falls in love and experiences loss. Redlin is not your typical 'hero'. He's selfish and ambitious but that is within reason. He's experiencing a chaotic life and balancing power and friendships. ZB Steele holds your hand throughout though and whilst we may come to care for this character, we can see just how he has come to be the man he is rumoured to be. What marks this novel as amazing is the supporting cast. Not only do we have Redlin, the feared, but as much as this is Redlin's story, there is a whole cast of characters that we come to know and love and journey alongside.

I really enjoyed how deep the magic system was and just how epic the fighting was. Fighting scenes can sometimes drag but ZB Steele had me captivated throughout. I was enthralled by the way the fighting was described, easy to follow but packing a punch. The magic system, called the Shattering, is elemental-based and whilst it may not be entirely different, I enjoyed how this was portrayed and how the magic was given to the user. This tied in to a lot of RPGs that I played when I was younger, like Final Fantasy and Breath of Fire. I also enjoyed the lore we slowly get given with the Gods and how these impact the story and the wielder themselves.

Whispers of the Storm is a fantastically written story that will have you turning the page without stopping. I was incredibly impressed by this novel and how epic it was. The story is a wonderfully nostalgic read for those that grew up with adventure stories but also offered something new. ZB Steele is definitely on my radar for future books. This has topped the list of favourites this year so far.
