Listened to this one on audiobook, which probably made me enjoy it more. Overall, it felt like the author spent a lot of time developing a reflective tone without actually putting much deeper thought into his reflections. He makes it clear throughout the book that he was raised to bullshit people, and when that’s hammered in consistently, it does make you wonder how much of the book is actually true. I’m not opposed to exaggerated/bullshit biographies (see: my enjoyment of the Weird Al biopic), but this wasn’t presented as such. All in all, I think it’s fine for a typical celebrity memoir while self-indulgent, the first half is at least pretty interesting. Once he starts to rise in fame, the book loses a lot of its appeal and he doesn’t delve too much into Hollywood backrooms anyway.

I’d recommend this to fans of McConaughey and/or folks that appreciate learning the backstories of famous folks. ]]>

Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey
"Green lights:
- Matthew McConaughey is a self-proclaimed optimist. It’s refreshing to see the perspective of someone whose glass is so full.
- The way he reads the audiobook is pretty darn funny, making me spontaneously laugh many times.
- There are some pieces of good advice, like standing firm with your decisions to forego the easy paths while you wait for the right one.

Yellow lights:
- M.M. is a weird dude, but if you opt to listen to or read his book you probably already know that.
- There are lots of stories about his bodily fluids and touching himself. Not one, not two, but three anecdotes about (earmuffs kids) wet dreams.

Red light:
- I was seriously creeped out by his description of the night he met his wife. They were at a bar, and when it closed he invited her back to his place for a drink. She declined, but when it turned out her car had been towed he asked her again to come over for one drink, after which his limo driver would take her home. She then accepted, but when she was ready to leave oh darn his limo was mysteriously no longer available. And gosh darn it, that late at night no cab companies were still open. So she was then basically trapped there and had to stay the night. Call me a snowflake, but NOT COOL MATTHEW, NOT COOL! But she obviously disagreed since she married him."

Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey
"Oh lord, was this annoying. I love a good celebrity memoir, but not when riddled with self-help tidbits. If McConaughey had stuck to personal essays without all the cheesy, self-satisfactory interjections (“prescription! and “note to self! and “bumper sticker!), I’d have liked it more, even though the stories themselves felt very anecdotal and lacked depth. Unless you’re a massive fan, I can’t recommend."

Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey
"Really enjoyed this one. I really love Matthew McConnaughey as a human and as an actor so I was really excited to hear he wrote a book! I listened to the audiobook and his narration is absolutely fantastic, if you decide to read this book you HAVE to go with the audiobook, his voice is amazing and his narration was so fun I was smiling like an idiot most of the time reading this.

Only reason I knocked off a star is because I wasn’t a huge fan of the self-help parts of this book, I was more interested in hearing his interesting life stories and learning more about his roles and his family and I could’ve done without the strange generic bumper sticker quotes haha.

But I love this! If you are a fan of his I’d definitely recommend checking this one out! I loved hearing more behind the scenes things about his career. "

Heart Berries is a raw, intimate, and creative memoir. It doesn’t shy away from trauma; there are TWs for self-harm, suicidal thoughts, abortion, sexual violence, alcoholism, and more. The author also doesn’t shy away from talking about her identity as an indigenous woman, motherhood, mental health issues, and other deeply personal aspects of her life. She uses an unconventional style throughout the book that wouldn’t work for hardly anyone else but soars in her hands.

I’d recommend this to folks that like stream-of-consciousness and creative memoirs. ]]>

The pros: it’s compelling historical fiction, the prose is beautiful at times, and the premise is intriguing. The cons: it can be overwritten at times, there are bits where the story drags, and at times it felt too modern. I would’ve loved for the book to get into Alfonso’s head a bit more, as the narrative within the story wasn’t too different from the assumed real-life story, and this could’ve been a way to freshen the story a bit. All in all, an enjoyable enough bit of historical fiction.

I’d recommend this to folks that like 16th century Italian history (in particular, the Medicis) or historical fiction. ]]>

Definitely one of the better selections from this series. I think we can see Ms. Marvel come into her own a little here, and I relished the bits of personality that peppered the pages. Like many other readers, I felt that the way the Spider-Man comics were added at the end did the other stories a disservice. I like crossovers having Captain Marvel join was fun! - but the scenario with Spider-Man just didn’t feel relevant or fit tonally.

I’d recommend this to tweens and comic book fans. ]]>
