I read all these hooks around 30 to 40 years ago. After this amount of time, most of them seem brand new. This one, on the other hand, I remembered vividly. The description of James Tyrone taking care of his paralyzed wife (polio) is heart-rending. Their relationship is complicated plus he has to make enough money for her care. As a reporter, he unravels the mystery of the no-show horses on race days, and he runs into some very nasty people. By the end my heart was in my throat, and I couldn't think of a good way for Ty to get out of his problems and save his wife other than to let her die. Jonah Dereham is a former jockey who is trying to make it in buying and selling horses for clients. The only problem is that he is honest. Divorced, with an alcoholic brother, and a small stables operation, his income goes out almost as fast as it comes in, but after two years he is beginning to show some success. Unfortunately, the other bloodstock agents cannot have an honest dealer upstaging them and their greedy profits. Jonah fights back. Matt Shore is having a very bad five years, and it just seems to be getting worse. Reduced by stages from being a major airline pilot to running a taxi service via small plane, he always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. A lovely and exciting movement from horse race to horse race, carrying jockeys, trainers, and owners to the next on their schedule, provides a fascinating background to this story as in so many of Francis's other stories. It also points out the inflexibility of air space regulations when lives are on the line. Matt may save them, but then he gets investigated and fined! Taking place mostly in Norway, the book gives you a good notion of what it is like there - cold! It starts out with a bang with the hero, David Cleveland, and his jockey club security friend being run over by a larger boat while on the water in a dinghy. If David thought it was cold above the water, underwater was even colder. Immediately, the book is hard to put down and delivers all the excitement and tension one usually expects from the Francis team. I enjoyed it to the end and loved the masterly synopsis of the events that David was investigating. ]]>
