Why Fish Don’t Exist by Lulu Miller
"was frustrated with this book! i get that miller wants the audience to experience the same shock and disgust she does after discovering that jordan was a hardcore eugenicist, but i truly don't understand why i was asked to empathize and care so much about him for the first 65% of the book. like come on, he was the founding president of stanford. we kind of know who he is already!
the fact that fish aren't a meaningful scientific/evolutionary category wasn't interesting to me and i think it's a stretch that it would have been any kind of "fuck you" to jordan lol. the category of "fish" has social meaning and that is more than enough for me"

Roadside Picnic by Arkady Strugatsky
"loved this book. even after an event like an alien visit, life just goes on and on, things get worse and worse, the drudgery of it all, and we just have to keep going anyways. "

Good.

I did like Fire Upon the Deep more, and Seveneves more, but still enjoyed this a lot.

Looking forward to reading the rest of the series. ]]>

This was fine. I probably enjoyed reading the related Wikipedia articles more, but the book puts together a lot of history anecdotes together in a fun way.

Read this after Matt Levine mentioned it. ]]>

Enjoyed this autobiography of Black Panther's co-founder Huey P Newton.

My favorite parts were about growing up, and how he developed and defined the Black Panther's ten point program.

The later parts about nuances of court cases were a little less engaging for me, but still really interesting to see how he worked within the system even when the system actively discriminated against him. ]]>

I liked the first book much more.

But this one is still fun and satisfying. ]]>

I loved this.

1934 novel about an author who publishes a novel heavily inspired by her neighbors, and then the book becomes quite popular, the neighbors realize it's based on them, and are offended.

First, it's funny and great characters. Second, I really do love the meta commentary about being a writer, what is fair to write about or not, and what reactions people have when they feel used or feel depicted in an unfair way. ]]>
