i loved this book! i read this in one sitting at 9pm, so it's fair to say this is very hard to put down, especially with suzanne collins' signature of dropping a heart wrenching reveal at the end of each chapter. honestly i didn't know what to expect from haymitch's games but finding out that they were pretty much nothing like what we saw in the catching fire highlight reel made this a really intriguing read. spoilers are kind of interwoven throughout the rest of this review so read at your own risk.

overall this was an excellent read and a wonderful prequel because of how much it added to the main trilogy, both in terms of character development and worldbuilding. i can't wait to see this on the big screen in november 2026 <3
