One of those books that more or less successfully covers "everything" about a topic - in this case, the history of visual art everywhere since the earliest known examples. For much of the way, the picture is also truly international rather than Western-centric (or at least it seems so to me). So, for example, there will be one chapter on "Korean art: Goryeo Dynasty" and another one on "Romanesque". However, in the last few centuries, the focus is on different Western movements in art, and other parts of the world are only given passing nods: "European figurative painting" is one chapter, "East Asian art" another.

It was a fruitful journey. As someone who have little sense in Art generally, it's a good start. It's my first read into the field and I only opted for it to understand the background of what art directors base their thinking on.

The book is a comprehensive overview of art history, covering various movements and popular art pieces. It wasn't a dry recounting of facts and figures; it filled with stories, visuals, and underlying insights that kept me going (which was the main reason I got the book).

Plus, it looks good on my table :)

I enjoyed this very much! Very good to cultivate yourself in a general way, and Farthing manages to make a fairly in-depth analysis despite the limits imposed by such an ambitious proposal.

Despite being superficially about the entirety of art, Art: The Whole Story is more precisely about Western European art and its influences, with some lip service paid towards art from North America. It presents a very Anglo- and Eurocentric view of visual art, and even in those domains it has some gaping omissions. The book works hard to create and preserve a narrative where Western Europe is the cradle of all innovation and that "progress" in arts is linear, and much of the opposing evidence has either been ignored or willfully omitted.

For instance, reading the book one gets the idea that there hasn't been visual art in the Americas south of Mexico between the Olmecs and Nazca lines and 1950s, and no art from central Eurasia *ever*. Most of Russian art also remains omitted, including anything from Ilya Repin to the entirety of art of the Soviet Union under Stalin. Despite generally regarded as the first known Western abstract painter, Swedish artist Hilma af Klint seems to not warrant inclusion, nor does scarcely anyone from Northern Europe other than Edward Munch. Even viking art has been omitted in its entirety. Harlem Renaissance is also not included, and mentions of African-American artists are overall scarce.

It comes perhaps as no surprise that any particularly controversial artists that may have gotten the book banned in certain countries do not feature on its pages. Ai Weiwei, the psychedelic and punk art movements in their entirety. Even Tibetan Buddhist art remains omitted, perhaps in order to placate the censors, since the book has been printed in China. The least radical art by Banksy was chosen as well.

The book also propagates the all too common view that more remote and 'exotic' cultures are largely defined by their decorative arts, ceramics, and furniture, even when a rich tradition of painting and large-form sculpture is available, such as in Chinese art. On the other hand, in case of Western European art, sculpture and ceramics are mostly omitted, even though cabinetry and French ééԾٱ such as François Linke and André-Charles Boulle having been very successful and influential.

Overall the book is lukewarm. It's helpful if one's goal is to impress art collectors by name dropping some list of influences, but it presents too limited and selective view for anyone interested in art history from an objective point of view. For a English-language audience, the book is much more likely to confirm any biases they might have than expand their view of the art world.

I read the 2010 edition, and it is possible that some of my complaints have already been addressed in the later editions.

Due for another update which scrutinise/challenges how colonialist countries “acquired some of the pieces included in the book. I also felt that the momentum dropped for the last section... or maybe there was just more crap art in more recent times. Otherwise, great overview and perfect coffee table book to dip in and out of.

Very good insight into the world of art through the ages. The most popular artworks of every art movement are explained in detail. The book also gives information about artworks in other continents, not only in Europe. However, I was expecting to see and read more about some artworks which are only mentioned in the book but not showed in detail.

This is a good reference book with loads of information about styles, some artist bios, and historical periods and of course, information about a number of paintings. This one has a little more 'world' art in it including Asia rather than just European art. Easy to use and understand for both teens and adults. Some nudity included but not excessive.
