Charged with a crime they didn’t commit, the MacKinnon brothers faced a death sentence until they agreed to serve the British Crown in the colonies and take up arms against the French. Allied with the Indian tribes who lived beside them in the wilderness, the Scottish Highland warriors forged a new breed of soldier MacKinnon’s Rangers Major Connor MacKinnon despises his commander, Lord William Wentworth, beyond all other men. Ordered to rescue Wentworth’s niece after the Shawnee take her captive, he expects Lady Sarah Woodville to be every bit as contemptible as her uncle. Instead, he finds a brave and beautiful lass in desperate peril. But the only way to free Sarah is for Connor to defeat the Shawnee warrior who kidnapped her—and claim her himself. Torn by tragedy from her sheltered life in London, Lady Sarah is unprepared for the harshness of the frontier—or for the attraction she feels toward Connor. When they reach civilization, however, it is she who must protect him. For if her uncle knew all that Connor had done to save her, he would surely kill him. But the flames of passion, once kindled, are difficult to deny. As desire transforms into love, Connor will have to defy an empire to keep Sarah at his side.

UPDATE! Congratulations RITA finalist, Pamela Clare!

Check out Pamela's blog post about getting "the call."

My own foreword:

I first want to say thank you, Pamela, for giving me the opportunity the excitement and honor of reading this book, chapter by chapter, as it was being written, then again once it was completed. I’m not in the least embarrassed to say that even after that, I read it again, twice more in its entirety, and still knowing what was coming, what to expect, I laughed, I cried, I sighed, I was angry, my hands shook, my heart raced you name the emotion and while reading this book, I felt it, again and again. Such an incredible experience! So yeah, thank you, Pamela, truly.

Now, let's move on to the reason you’re all here

Defiant is the third book in the MacKinnon’s Rangers series and one of the most beautiful, amazing, heartbreaking, joyous, poignant, exciting, perfectly wonderful romance novels I’ve ever read. No, I take it back, that's not what it is... calling it a romance novel doesn’t do it justice. What it is, is a true love story, in every way imaginable. I adored Iain and Annie’s story, and Morgan and Amalie’s, but Connor and Sarah my absolute favorite of the three. It's such an adventure! An incredible journey from letting go of the past to embracing the here and now, and the future. Connor and Sarah have so many things to overcome, and I don’t just mean Indians, murder, kidnapping, pissy, asshat relatives and gossip and rumors I mean, yeah, those things are there, but nothing compared to what they had to overcome within themselves their own personal demons anger, betrayal, hopelessness, a need for revenge so consuming it can destroy one’s soul such a powerful story.

Okay, some things you need to know. Before you begin this book, stock up on the following:

1. Snacks and beverages that don’t require refrigeration. You’ll be needing plenty of these because you’re going to want to lock yourself away somewhere nice and quiet, and once there, you will not want to leave in search of sustenance. Trust me on this.

2. Tissues. Boxes and boxes of tissues. Don't skimp, you’ll need them.

3. And girls, ‘cuz I love you and I got your backs, this is critical make sure you’ve got your significant other on standby, or a stockpile of batteries. Just sayin’

Some final thoughts

There are so many things to love about the MacKinnon brothers. Their passion, their sense of humor, their honor and need to always do what’s right, the way they take care of their women and this quote from the book sums them up so, so well:
Joseph speaking to Sarah: “You are new here, so I will explain. In this land, nobility comes not from one’s fathers or a title or from the land one owns, but from one’s actions. His voice was hard-edged, and his words seemed harsh to her. “The MacKinnon brothers are the highest nobility to those who live on the frontier—true warriors, men who know how to fight and survive, men who put the lives of others before their own. Your family’s wealth, your title, your virtue—they mean nothing out here. They won’t fill your belly, and they won’t keep you alive. What matters most right now is your survival.
And one of the most beautiful, romantic lines I've ever read, and when you read this story you'll understand why it had me in tears:
"Och, Sarah, how shall I call augh beautiful again unless it be the sight of you?"
Yeah, not just in tears, sobbing so hard my chest hurt.

But this wouldn't be a MacKinnon's Rangers story without those laugh out loud scenes we've come to expect, those moments that bring some light to the darkness and this exchange is one of them: Joseph and Connor:
Joseph stood, his gaze traveling over Connor’s clean-shaven face and hairless chest, his lips curving in a grin. “What’s this? The cub is not so furry.

“That devil woman’s granddaughters waylaid me, took me to her lodge, insisting they had to prepare me for the ceremony. They bathed and oiled me, shaved my face, then plucked every hair out of my chest and belly. God’s blood, it was torture!

Connor’s skin still smarted.

Joseph chuckled. “You look good—just like a human being should look. Only animals have hairy faces and bodies.

This was a familiar disagreeance, one they’d debated many times afore.

“Real men have hair on their chests, Connor fired back. “You look like a lass wi smooth paps.

But this only made Joseph laugh harder.

Connor’s temper snapped. “Dinnae be laughin at me. They went for my cods, so they did! I had to thrust them away, else they’d have plucked me bare there, too. I willna submit my bollocks to such abuse.

Joseph bit his lip, clearly trying to rein in his mirth. “So you prefer to make women search the bush to find the snake?

“M snake is no so small that the lasses must search for it.
So yeah... I could go on and on and on, sharing quotes and telling you how much I love every single word of this book, but I won't do that, I won't deprive you the pleasure of experiencing the story for yourself and discovering all the amazing little gems that make Defiant one of my very favorite historical love stories ever.

And great news for all us MacKinnon fans, Pamela has promised at least two more full length books in the series!! YAY!!! And she just confirmed that Joseph will be the hero for one of those books!!

Edited to add: The trailer has finally been released!!

And the live action book trailer for DEFIANT is out! And totally awesome, I might add!

“Remember this night. Remember me.

Yes, Pamela, I sure will. Always.

Unforgettable. Enthralling. Emotional. Beautiful.

Simply amazing! Defiant is a masterpiece written by the truly gifted Pamela Clare. Kudos! Pamela’s beautiful and stunning prose is simply outstanding. She knows how to paint a vivid yet believable picture.
Ladies, you all know what has to come*kissing Connor* *kissing my Kindle* *does the happy dance* Pamela put my humble soul right into readers heaven.

March 1760, Northwest of Albany
Lady Sarah Woodville had been sailing with her chaperone and her lady’s maid from New York up the Hudson river toward Albany to her Uncle William Wentworth. She needs his help because her parents sent her away after she allegedly “scandalized herself and her family. Her chaperone had been unable to tolerate the rocking of the ship and to help ease her seasickness, the captain had rowed her, Sarah, and the lady’s maid ashore, together with a few other passengers. Shortly afterwards they were attacked by painted men with muskets, knives , and hatchets. Most of them were killed. Sarah, her lady’s maid, and a young boy were held captive and Wentworth sent his best men to free Sarah: Connor and Joseph. The plot is very engaging and I don't want to give away more since I would spoil your reading experience.

When Connor saw Sarah for the first time she seemed to be so young and fragile, and yet also defiant. Yes, Connor, you’re in for a surprise.
Sarah is a strong and defiant character and the perfect match for the equally strong Connor. I loved this phrase: She, Lady Sarah Woodville, great-granddaughter of His Majesty King George II, fell in love with Connor MacKinnon, colonial Ranger and son of Jacobites. *smiles* Therefore, I found Connor calling her Princess so suitable. It was a very sweet endearment.

Never reveal your true self to those who do not truly love you.

Connor is a hero in every sense of the word. He is a fierce, tough, and smart warrior. Moreover, Connor is an incredibly honorable and loyal man and treats Sarah with gentleness. He is very protective and he cares deeply for Sarah even before he knows that he is in love with her. Joseph explained it wonderfully:

In this land, nobility comes not from one’s fathers or a title or from the land one owns, but from one’s actions. The MacKinnon brothers are the highest nobility to those who live on the frontier—true warriors, men who know how to fight and survive, men who put the lives of others before their own.

BTW, I cannot wait to read Joseph’s story. As a matter of fact, I already adore this man. He is such an interesting and complex character, and I truly hope that his love interest will be a white woman. A mixed race romance? I’m so game. Here is a rather hilarious scene between Joseph and Connor:

"You look good--just like a human being should look. Only animals have hairy faces and bodies."
This was a familiar disagreeance, one they'd debated many times afore.
"Real men have hair on their chests," Connor fired back. "You look like a lass wi' smooth paps."
But this only made Joseph laugh harder.
Connor's temper snapped. "Dinnae be laughing' at me. They went for my cods, so they did! I had to shove them away, else they'd have plucked me bare there, too. I willna submit my bollocks to such abuse."
Joseph bit his lip, clearly trying to rein in his mirth. "So you prefer to make women search the bush to find the snake?"
"My snake is no' so small that the lasses must search for it."

There’s so much to love about this book. The characters are wonderfully drawn, they are multifaceted and very adorable. I loved the banter, the dialogue, and Connor’s absolutely endearing accent and the many (obviously) historically accurate details. You can expect a very good plot, action, drama, and beautifully written and very sensual love scenes. Connor's love making was incredibly tender, considerate and yet very passionate. The love between Connor and Sarah is truly beautiful, fierce, full of passion, hungry, and all-encompassing. It’s everything I could ever wish for because that’s romance at its best. And yes, I will shamelessly admit that I’m such a hopeless romantic.

“There’s a name for what you’re feelin, Sarah. Do you ken what it is?
Sarah shook her head. She was not sure she wanted to know. “Connor, I—
“’Tis desire.
She shook her head, took a step backward. “Nay, I—
“Shall we put my supposition to test?

I was wondering why Pamela would match Connor with Wentworth’s niece, Sarah. I mean Connor and Wentworth hate each other, after all. Then I had this inkling. Maybe Pamela wants us to come to gradually “like Wentworth before his story will be told. Having said that, this could be a very smart move. All in all, there were some signs in Defiant that showed us that Wentworth seems to have a heart *gasp*, even though it’s deeply buried, frozen under his armor.

Beyond doubt Wentworth is an intriguing secondary character. However, I have such a hard time to get past his evil deeds. His allegedly selfless act rubbed me the wrong way. I certainly don’t love this man and I don’t even particularly like him. Here comes a pretty huge spoiler:

I for one want Wentworth on his knees, groveling, begging for forgiveness. I want him to voice very clearly what an evil and cruel man he is. I don’t know if he is capable of selflessly loving a woman. Moreover, I’m very curious to get to know the woman who wants to burden herself with such a man. Ultimately, he is in dire need of redemption and as I understand it there has to be a progression of character change…step by step. Therefore, it’s good that his story will be told because I’m already sure that he needs a whole darn book to get his redemption.

Final verdict
Defiant is an emotionally-charged love story full of action, drama and so lushly detailed it will leave you breathless but in the end…utterly satisfied.

My love lies upon you.

I strongly advise you to read the author's very insightful afterword.

Thank you, Pamela, for another wonderfully written HR! I'd like to offer you a rose...

...and I heart you! Take care.

Review Update July 27th: I was recently made aware of a deleted scene from Defiant. The scene includes Nicholas, the main hero from Ride the Fire. Here's the link. Enjoy.

Huge 5 stars

I can't begin to express my love for this book. I'm sitting here writing this review with tears in my eyes and happiness in my heart.

Defiant is everything, and then some, that I've come to expect and love from a Pamela Clare historical romance. It's full of action, adventure, suspense, intrigue, romance, passion, family, friendship, honor, humor, sorrow, and happiness. Connor and Sarah have a powerful love story and I became teary eyed when they finally found their much deserved happily-ever-after.

I want to take this opportunity to express my love and admirationfor the MacKinnon's Rangers series as a whole, and pay tribute to myfavorite historical romance novelist, Pamela Clare. She has created an engaging historical world where I can completely immerse myself in the time period and fall in love with her brave, honorable, swoon-worthy heroes and her steadfast, admirable, and endearing heroines. I will alway treasure and hold dear to my heart the unforgettable characters of Iain and Annie, Morgan and Amalie, and Connor and Sarah. I am sad their story is over.

That said, I was excited to learn this series isn't fully completed yet. Pamela Clare has announced she plans to release a few more books for us to enjoy. One for Lord William Wentworth and one for Joseph. I can not wait to find out what actually happened to Lord Wentworth .

I love these books. I've loved getting to know the MacKinnon brothers and the women worthy of such men.Thank you, Pamela Clare, for giving me three books full of characters I admire, love, and will treasure forever.

There's nothing I can say in this review, no amount of superlatives I can use, to convey how much I adored this book! Och, I didn't want it to end!! I am going to miss these characters so much! Pamela Clare did a magnificent job bringing them to life--it's like they stepped off the pages and were right in front of me. Or that I was along with them on the journey. No one can paint a picture with words quite like Ms. Clare. From the very first page I was immersed in the story, and spent one hot July Saturday reading the book cover to cover, only stopping (briefly) to wipe away my tears and collecting myself. For me, I think this was the most emotional story of the series, not just for the story itself, but also because I had to say goodbye to the most swoonworthy heroes in all of Romance. God do I love those honorable, passionate MacKinnon brothers...

No recapping of the plot, the book blurb does a good job of that. Just some random thoughts and favorite passages (I've dog-earred a lot of pages!)...

*The book wasn't all drama. There were more than a few humorous scenes, especially between Connor and Joseph...

Joseph's reaction to Connor's depilation:

"You look good--just like a human being should look. Only animals have hairy faces and bodies."
"Real men have hair on their chests," Connor fired back. "You look like a lass wi' smooth paps."
But this only made Joseph laugh harder.
Connor's temper snapped. "Dinnae be laughin' at me. They went for my cods, so they did! I had to shove them away, else they'd have plucked me bare there, too. I willna submit my bollocks to such abuse."
Joseph bit his lip, clearly trying to rein in his mirth. "So you prefer to make women search the bush to find the snake?"
"My
snake is no' so small that the lasses must search for it."

I loved Connor's Scottish 'voice'.:)

Connor, preparing himself for Lady Sarah...

*I love PC's attention to detail.

*Favorite action scene:

*Favorite blossoming romance scene:
Yowza...

*Connor's creative cursing: Just something about "Och, Satan's hairy arse!" cracks me up every time!

*Sarah big 'secret' (why her parents sent her to the colonies in disgrace):

*Connor's guilt about how he reacted and his actions (his killing spree) after he thought his brother Morgan was dead. His confession to Sarah and her reaction (the hug) and her reply--"Have you not read the Bible, Connor? Even angels kill"--really moved me.

*"My love lies upon you". This kills me every time, whether its Iain, Morgan, or Connor saying it. Most romantic words in this whole series...

*Chapters 18 and 19--Sarah and Connor alone in the cabin (so glad that conveniently there was an abandoned cabin for them!)

"Och, Sarah. Tonight I'll show you the richness of a man's loving."
"Your breasts are beautiful, Sarah. See how they fill my hands?"

" Connor."

"Now I shall undress you."

"Do as you will. I am yours."

"Sarah! "Och, Christ!"

Oh wow...these chapters got my heart fluttering...

* Sarah playing the fiddle for Connor's men and the appreciation they showed her. That scene just warmed my heart--at last Sarah had the freedom to openly enjoy her music, and to have someone be proud of her.

*Lord Wentworth...hmm, what can I say about him? Well, he made an excellent villain. But yet there's something about him...I just don't want to give up on him yet. I do think he's redeemable. I mean, he did give Sarah that harpsichord! And that unselfish act, when he finally showed how much he did love Sarah...it had me tearing up. Wentworth needs a story of his own! (And if he gets a story, that means we have to see at least Sarah and Connor again!)

The harpsichord...

*The dismissing of the Rangers. A proud moment for Iain and Connor. One that made me tear up a bit for all that they went through.

*The big, beautiful epilogue. *sigh* To see everybody healthy and happy, and what their lives were going to be like...oh so satisfying. But it also made me kind of melancholy too.
And the cliffhanger with Wentworth? I want to know what he went through. I really want to know!

I guess I don't have to point out if you've read and , you're going to want to read this one. If you like historical romance, you're going to want to read this one. If you like stories that combine fact with some steamy romantic fiction, you're going to want to read this one. If you like stories with swoonworthy heroes and feisty heroines, you're going to want to read this one. If you like to read any type of romance--you're going to want to read this one. This was one of the few books this year that I've read cover-to-cover, non-stop until I was finished. Can't say that about too many books. After flipping through this book while writing the review, I found myself wanting to read it all over again! And I just might...5 big stars!

Re-read/listened to audiobook May'2022:

Still a big 5 star read!

Original rating/review July'2012:

5+ stars Colonial American/Frontier/Highlander Historical Romance

I’m a huge MacKinnon’s Rangers fan, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of Defiant ever since I squealed like a fangirl when I heard Connor would be getting his own book. I swooned hard and irrevocably for his brothers, Iain in and Morgan in , two of my all-time favorite romance keepers and heroes, and it seemed only fitting that brooding, enigmatic youngest brother, Connor, should get his own HEA. And after nearly two years of anticipation since I read the first two books in 2010, I’m happy to say that the brilliant and incomparable Pamela Clare not only exceeded my super high expectations but blew this right into the stratosphere! Brava!

I feel frustrated and inadequate writing this review because there just aren’t sufficient words to convey how much I loved this. It’s complexly A+mazing, powerful, emotive, thrilling, sensual, and heartrending with an unforgettable hero and heroine whose journey will leave you breathless, speechless, and deeply inspired. It’s the epitome of what I love about romance and a story of substance that I’d recommend for all those book snobs out there who look down their nose at romance authors and readers.

Defiant is a truly astounding, utterly enthralling, and beautifully moving read that will stay with you long after you’ve finished. Having read roughly 1,300 romances, Pamela Clare’s MacKinnon’s Rangers still holds a place of honor on my treasured keeper shelf. Big 5+ stars!

On a side note, Pamela Clare is not only a superb author goddess, but also an amazing person who genuinely cares about humanity and her fans. And I just wanted to express my sincere gratitude for that. So, thank you, Pamela, for giving so generously and joyously of your talent, dedication, and friendship.

I highly recommend checking out the live action trailer for Defiant for visual inspiration.

Addendum: I’m beyond excited that Joseph will be getting his own book! YAY! *happy dance and fangirl squeal*

MacKinnon’s Rangers is one of my top, all-time favorite romance series and the MacKinnon brothers (Iain, Morgan, and Connor) are some of the best, most swoonalicious heroes in all of Romancelandia!!!!

Minus the Outlander series, this was my first foray into early pre-American Revolution historical romance. Not that the main plot depends much on knowledge of that historical setting. It primarily focuses on a story about how Conner, a Scottish immigrant who was somewhat raised by some local Native American Indians and who was later forced into British service via blackmail, is now being forced into rescuing the niece of his blackmailer. The niece, Sarah, turns out to have some family ties to British royalty but is in the colonies for reasons she wishes to keep hidden for fear of public scorn.

I did not read the previous two books, so there was definitely some back story I was missing. However, I don't think it took too much away and could still be read as a standalone.

Lady Sarah Woodville is sent to the American colonies in disgrace over a scandal she doesn't even understand. Once in Albany, she plans to beseech her uncle Lord William Wentworth for help but along the way to visit him she is kidnapped by Shawnee Indians and her entire future changes.

Major Connor MacKinnon is now in charge of MacKinnon's Rangers after Iain retired to take care of Annie and their children and Morgan was kicked out for his marriage to the French Amalie. Connor is in a bad place emotionally, he feels a lot of guilt for his harsh actions to French soldiers while he believed his brother Morgan to be dead. Lord William commands Connor and Joseph, his Mahican friend, to find Lady Sarah and rescue her. They go searching for her expecting to find a spoiled princess and instead find a courageous young woman.

Connor and Joseph arrive at the Shawnee village and go thorough some trials to save Lady Sarah, who impressed them with her strength and bravery in the face of her captors abuse. Connor wins her freedom, but not without consequences which bring him and Sarah together. Over the long, dangerous trip back to Fort Edward, Connor and Sarah forge a relationship based on mutual attraction and admiration but know there is no hope for a future between a high born English lady and a Scottish frontiersman. But then a surprising turn of events causes Connor, along with help from his family and friends, to fight to have Sarah in his life forever no matter the danger and obstacles.

I loved Connor's book! What I love about all three MacKinnon brothers' books is that they are wonderfully written romances that are actually romantic and a joy to read. The hero and heroine are both good people who stand together despite what the world throws at them. This setting and time period (American colonies during the French and Indian War) fascinates me and the author has a way of bringing it to life so I feel like I am hiking through the forest, running from danger along with Connor, Sarah and Joseph.

Connor is a great hero who rescues Sarah from a harsh fate then finds himself falling in love with his worst enemy's niece. He tried to do what he thinks is the honorable thing and let her go, but fights for Sarah when she is put in harm's way by a vengeful Lord William. Sarah is an endearing heroine, you feel her love of music which colors her life and feel sorry for her rigid upbringing. She faces a situation that is completely foreign to her but comes through it with grace and courage, learning a lot about herself in the process which helps her stand up for what she wanted when it counted. I like how she never betrayed Connor even when it might have made things easier for her.

The background characters help make the story. Joseph is a great part of the story, he and Sarah have a nice brother/sister bond. I hope to see his story soon! Wentworth first makes you want to hurt him badly, then pulls an act which brings some redemption - we will see what his story becomes when Ms. Clare writes it, I have faith she can make him redeemable as a hero. I loved seeing a bit of Iain, Annie, Morgan, Amalie and the children. The Rangers make some smaller appearances, plus there is a great farewell at the end of the book that will leave you chocked up!

Defiant is a brilliant finale to the MacKinnon brothers' story. I love all three books, which tell the story of how Iain, Morgan and Connor survive the frontier and find love despite the war they are fighting. The ending of Defiant made me tearful and nostalgic to be reaching the end of the MacKinnon brothers stories but it was a great ending. I love this trilogy, Iain, Morgan and Connor have a special place in my heart for being such sexy, honorable men who really know how to protect, love and care for their women.

5++++ HEART-POUNDING, BREATHTAKING STARS!!! SWOOOOOOOON!!! I don’t care if you’ve ‘read this book, take the plunge and get the audio version…this is a MUST LISTEN!! What the brilliant Kaleo Griffith does with Pamela Clare’s epic, emotional story and her beautiful words, is an experience like no other. Anger, passion, hate, fear, lust, humor and love…it’s all here, in this captivating, exceptional book by the talented Pamela Clare…and it comes through loud and clear with Kaleo Griffith’s intense, powerful narration!! I’m still having trouble wrapping my head and heart around what I just heard!! Pamela Clare + Kaleo Griffith=INCREDIBLE!!

One of my favorite scenes:
Joseph stood, his gaze traveling over Connor’s clean-shaven face and hairless chest, his lips curving in a grin. “What’s this? The Cub is not so furry.
“That devil woman’s granddaughters waylaid me, took me to her lodge, insisting they had to prepare me for the ceremony. They bathed and oiled me, shaved my face, then plucked every hair out of my chest and belly. God’s blood, it was torture! Connor’s skin still smarted.

I had to shove them away, else they’d have plucked me bare there, too. I willna submit my bollocks to such abuse.
Joseph bit his lip, clearly trying to rein in his mirth. “So you prefer to make women search the bush to find the snake?
“M snake is no so small that the lasses must search for it. Connor was in no mood for foolishness. “Och, Joseph, for the love of God, stop your bloody jestin!

I adored the relationship between Connor and Joseph…oh how I loved the two of them, and I was so pleased to have so much Joseph. As much as I love the MacKinnon brothers, my heart belongs to Joseph.

Review to follow…or maybe not…this book undid me...I think I might have said it all!

Thank you to my sweet friend Dorsey, who took the Defiant journey with me!!! You're right...I shouldn't drive and listen!

WOW! Romantic, sexy, riveting and completely addictive read.

Connor McKinnon, is loving, loyal and protective of his loved ones. He's no saint and he constantly feels remorseful of the things that he has done, in order to survive the war. You can't help but love him. He's a gentleman and a strong sexy warrior to boot.

Lady Sarah Woodville is strong, compassionate and courageous and I admire her. She has endured a lot in such a short time and she evolves into more a mature person for it. She finds her strength and peace in Connor and would love nothing more than just be just Sarah and not some high nobility, which is her life.

Loved the connection between the H/h, and the sheer love they share. Not to mention the secondary characters which make up the Rangers. This is beautifully written, wonderfully emotional and romantic that will certainly have your little heart fluttering.

A favorite quote:

Och, Sarah, how shall I call augh beautiful again unless it be the sight of you?

Connor

Pamela is truly a wonderful story-teller and this book is just stellar. Loved it!

**WARNING You know when you read an awesome, awesome book and you want to write an equally awesome, awesome review to pay homage but when you sit down to write it your brain feels like it left the station days ago and all your words lack the emotion you need?? For this very reason I’ve been struggling with this review for not just hours, but days. So please keep that in mind**

Pamela Clare fans can rest assured that the third instalment to the MacKinnon’s Rangers series is not only as fantastic as the first two books, but it is above and beyond expectation.

I’ve always sworn by Pamela’s contemporary suspense romance, but after finishing Defiant I am no longer situated in one camp. I am firmly straddled between her contemporary bliss and historical perfection. I am still entirely gobsmacked.

You know that feel you get from a perfect romance read, the one where your chest feels heavy, somewhere between a dull throb and a soaring sensation? When your mind is so content that your body voices its approval as well? Well days later I am still buzzing. For three nights I have gone to bed thinking of Connor, Iain and Morgan. So yeah, I’m a little slutty, but I can’t help it. These men are sculpted God’s of perfection. Inside and out I can’t fault them. Rugged, determined, tough, but yet the thing that drives me crazy is the size of their hearts.

Connor and Sarah’s story had me in a constant state of agony. We all have busy lifestyles, but for a book like this you need to clear your schedule. I’d go to the extreme of arranging divorce proceedings, shipping the kids to the grandparents and quitting your job, just so you can have undisturbed peace and quiet. I vow to you, you will need it.

Like his brothers Connor has an unwavering set of morals that make me swoon. And Sarah was such a young and beautiful woman inside and out. Their love for each other was palpable.

I can only imagine the extent of research Pamela Clare went to for this series. I’m not a history buff and I live in Australia, so the history of other countries doesn’t interest me all that much. But Pamela made me excited about learning more...and the foreword at the end of the story which tells more about the history surrounding this book was fantastic.

Now I’m not going to babble on any longer. The story was fantastic and for someone who doesn’t do re-reads, I already want to read it again. So please do yourself a favour and check out this series.

***Note from the author: For those of you obsessed with this series, I was excited to find out that Pamela has plans to make a book for the HUNKY Joseph. WOOT WOOT.***

Magnificent! Outstanding! Superb! Brilliant! Bravo Ms. Clare for another captivating story overflowing with each essential element that makes this a perfect read! I loved everything and every minute of this fascinating tale of danger, survival, heartache, betrayal, forgiveness, sacrifice, but most of all an unforgettable love story!
“M shoulders are broad, lass, my back strong. Let me share the weight of this.
Charged with a crime they did not commit, the MacKinnon brothers have been forced to serve the hated British Crown in colonial America and take up arms against the French and their Indian allies. Forced at an early age from their beloved Scotland, these three Highlander brothers found themselves growing up with the Mahican tribe. With this background we get a special breed of men, those with fierce Scots courage and the stealth and cunning fighting abilities of their Indian brothers. They, along with many other courageous Scots, form a unique team of warriors. These special men are known as MacKinnon’s Rangers.
I love each of the MacKinnon brothers, Iain, Morgan and Connor along with their Mahican friend Joseph, who is more like a blood relative than mere friend. The closeness and camaraderie of the Rangers will endear you to these fierce loyal Scots. Pamela Clare's MacKinnon Series holds top place as my favorite among Historicals.
This is the third installment of the MacKinnon Rangers Series and is the story of Connor, the youngest brother. I found him to have all those admiring attributes as his older brothers and each of these strapping and powerfully built warriors are men of honor who are willing to face danger and death to help those in need. Connor is brave, strong, a fierce warrior and deadly to his enemies. He’s also highly skilled in hunting and tracking and a man of great fortitude. He knows the land well and is a tough survivor. In battle, he is a force to be reckoned with and his men depend on his excellent skills. When he makes a vow or gives his word, you can depend on it being carried through to the end. He’s also one of the best heroes I’ve read, ever!
Connor MacKinnon is fighting demons from his past that tears at his soul. In addition to the guilt and regret, he also deals with his intense hatred for the man who forced this crusade onto himself and his brothers. William Wentworth is his commanding officer and with his threats he keeps Connor confined to this war. The stunts Wentworth has pulled are unforgivable and at times Connor is nearly consumed with his desire for revenge.
And now Connor and Joseph have been called into rescuing Wentworth’s beloved niece, Lady Sarah Woodville. Due to a terrible scandal she’s been banished from her homeland and sent to New York to await further notice from her angry father. Desperate to see her uncle William, she sets off for a visit hoping he will understand her plight and believe in her. But along the way, she is captured by warriors from an enemy tribe and Wentworth realizes the only person who can save her is Connor MacKinnon.
There are so many things I liked about Sarah Woodville. She may have grown up gently bred and in a completely different environment, but this smart young lady has a heavy dose of courage. Leaving her sheltered life behind, she is unprepared for the harshness of this land. Captured by the Shawnee, she soon learns her title and privileged life matter little in this wild country. And Joseph’s words gives evidence to the caliber of men that make up the MacKinnon brothers..
“You are new here, so I will explain. In this land, nobility comes not from one’s fathers or a title or from the land one owns, but from one’s actions. The MacKinnon brothers are the highest nobility to those who live on the frontier true warriors, men who know how to fight and survive, men who put the lives of others before their own. Your family’s wealth, your title, your virtue they mean nothing out here. They won’t fill your belly, and they won’t keep you alive. What matters most right now is your survival.
And what a journey Ms. Clare gives us in Defiant! It is nothing less than amazing! Brilliantly written and spell-binding in its intensity, each of my emotions were brought into play as I traveled along, lived and breathed the plight of Connor and Sarah! My heart ached, I cried, laughed, and at times became so angry I could easily do bodily harm. And the tenderness, the devotion Connor gives to Sarah had me holding my breath and sighing in pure bliss while the soul-rocking love scenes easily spoke the true depth of their love. This story drew me into their world so deeply that I felt each emotion; their happiness and despair; their desires and fears, guilt and loneliness, along with each threat they faced and it all became real. I was utterly enthralled!

Pamela Clare, you are an amazingly talented writer who not only gives a tender, passionate love story but one steeped in historical detail and wrapped in the perils and risk of that time period. The narrative is superb and the characters totally invaded my heart. It is heart-rending, funny, sensual, provocative, with smoldering hot love scenes and as always, an alpha hero that not only I admire and respect, but one that has me melting! I am often a hero driven reader and you never disappoint!

I highly recommend all Pamela Clare’s books. Her Historicals as well as her I-Team series are breathtaking!

5+++++ Stars

There are no words of praise lavish enough to bestow the rank of perfection found in “Defiant, the latest outstanding historical novel written by the incomparable Pamela Clare. This author holds a magic writing wand in her hand. The characters come to life on the pages of her books. Her work is simply outstanding and unforgettable. If you’ve never experienced the joys of reading one of her books, I urge you to do so.

Readers have waited with eager anticipation for Connor MacKinnon’s story. Behold -- it has arrived and it’s so much more than any reader could have expected. There’s not a teensy weensy itsy bitty particle of disappointment to be found among the words in this fabulous addition to the “Rangers series. Connor and Sarah are magnificently matched and truly joyful to watch as their tender relationship develops into a fiery and passionate mating. As we’ve come to expect from this author, the sensual love scenes are exquisitely written with care and realism. The story is packed with high drama, a heart-wrenching journey towards survival, and the hope, joys, and sacrifices a family is willing to make for those they love.

Pamela Clare is unquestionably one of the best in presenting the complete package. She digs deep into her research. She cares about what’s beneath the surface. She doesn’t accept anything less. Her stories present a true and accurate representation of the history and time period surrounding the storyline. The proof is in the details.

I stand in awe of Pamela Clare’s many talents and charitable acts of kindness. I’m thankful for the day I discovered her books. I’m blessed to have enjoyed the time she so freely shares with her readers. And I look forward to many more wonderful hours of reading pleasure penned by this amazing writer. Congrats, Pamela! You’ve made it to the top of the mountain once again.

Wow, a great addition to this series. Conner's story was everything I could have hoped for. I had to read this in bits and pieces as I've been on a family vacation. It was torture not to be able to just sit and read this book through! I really enjoyed how this ended too, a strong finish for three great brothers.

Pamela Clare has lived up to the high standards she set for herself with the first two books in the MacKinnon's Rangers series with Defiant. Connor seemed immature and lacked the intensity of Iain and Morgan to me in the prior books, but he has definitely come into his own. If anything, Connor carries a more weighty burden due to his guilt over his actions in the aftermath of Morgan's abduction by the French. This burden has made his soft edges iron-hard and razor sharp, but it has not blunted the integrity that is such an intrinsic aspect of the MacKinnons. Readers who love Scottish heroes will adore Connor, although many of them have already read this book and don't need me to tell them that. Connor is delicious. While I don't really care for ladies' men, Connor's way with women is part of the texture that makes him the hero he is. I feel that his character grows and evolves even over this book, and things he thought didn't matter to him become readily apparent as his love for Sarah grows. This is a book for die-hard romance fans, as the reader is treated to a intimate view of Connor and Sarah falling deeply in love even though that seems impossible when this book begins. Their relationship is both sweet and very steamy, and that balance is very hard to achieve without sacrificing something. Ms. Clare definitely hit on both cylinders with this book.

Sarah was a very appealing heroine. My heart was won over by her sweetness and courage and her integrity. It was painful to read about how her family betrayed and turned their backs on her by not trusting and believing in the person she was, even in light of the terrible scandal that unfolded. Especially from people who supposed to be believing Christians. They showed little of who Christ is and stands for in the way they treated their daughter. It was interesting that the one family member who stood by her and truly loved her was Wentworth. Now many will say awful things about the man, but even at his worst, I still find him to be a fascinating and magnetic character. And since I do like bad boys, I can honestly say I have crush on him. His behavior went both to new heights and depths in this book, but ultimately, he won my allegiance in how he showed true love for Sarah. I cannot wait to read his story, so I hope that it comes to fruition and soon! But I know I was talking about Sarah, so let me get back to her. Sarah is also a complex character. She is a noblewoman, but deep down, her heart is very heart-to-earth and genuine. Her love of music touched me because I can identity with that joy of music, although my own musical talent is much more limited. While she experiences some terrible events in this journey to the New World, I believe it was her destiny to come here so she could be the person she was intended to be. England was way too small for her. She is a powerful, brave and capable woman. She was born to be Connor MacKinnon's woman. No doubt about it.

Ms. Clare shows impeccable research and a sense of the period in this novel. She doesn't tiptoe around the savagery and the violence that was an integral part of this period in colonial history. Her portrayal of people shows a lot of depth. There are no stereotypes in this novel. The natives have the same potential to be noble and honorable as the whites. Both show equal potential for acts of brutality. For a lifelong student and a fan of history, books like this bring home that reading about these events provides a safe distance that those who lived back then did not have the luxury to experience. This draws me into the story and makes me feel things as I read. Not always positive, but very impacting, making for an unforgettable reading experience.

While Defiant is an excellent read, it's not a book to gobble down. So much happens and the small details are crucial and should not be rushed through. As an avid reader, there is a tendency to read with an eye towards finishing a book and moving onto the next one of the pile. Pamela Clare is an author that you don't want to do that with. You want to sit and savor her writing. I was glad that I took the time to do that with Defiant. This series is a fantastic example of the high quality of writing available in the writing genre. I definitely recommend it to readers who want a larger-than-life historical adventure rife with passion and incredible detail.

This book deserves Way more than 5 Stars!!

Overall Rating, Priceless!!

This is the second book of the year that for me was priceless. As I look at all the other reviews for this book here at ŷ I see I'm not the only one who absolutely, positively LOVED everything about this book. It was so good that I'm at a loss for words and I'm going to have a hard time writing a review befitting such a master piece.

Right from the beginning I was drawn into this book and never for a moment was I not hooked. This story was to me the most purest of romances I have ever read. The love Connor and Sarah had for each other just leaped off of the pages. Both of these characters surpassed any that I have ever read. The story exciting with exhilarating action that just kept the pages turning.

There were some LOL moments as well as moments that had tears streaking down my face. It's like this book grabbed my heart and I could actually feel what was happening while reading. If that's not enough to praise this book, get this, I even cried for one of the bad guy's, I know, crazy huh. Well I guaranty when you read it you will feel the same way.

Of course the love scenes were wonderful and just enough to please most readers. That Connor, OH MY, he gets my vote for the BEST HERO EVER! The way he was with Sarah, how could she not fall in love with him, heck I'm in love with him.

I feel justified in saying that all my book loving friends out there that have opted to read another book instead of getting and reading this one are out of their ever loving minds and should make a point to put THIS book as their very next read, hahahahaha.

WELL DONE PAMELA CLARE!!!! I'm so happy to hear that you are writing Joseph's story next. I hope we don't have a long wait but wait I can assure you I will be doing :-)

I really enjoyed this book! I've only read Pamela Clare's romantic suspense (the I-Team series), so I wasn't sure what her historical voice would be like. I found this book to be refreshingly unique--the first romance I've read set in Colonial America. I brought this book with me on vacation--Disney World with two kids--and found myself staying up much later than I should've been to read it. Note: It's the third book in a series about three brothers, but I hadn't read the previous two books and didn't feel lost at all.

10 Stars for me. Now how in the heck am I going to write this review to where it doesn't just come off as one long fan gurl squee???? I don't know if I can, but I shall try tomorrow...I want to let my brain process all this goodness overnight. Such an awesome read!!! Ok, slept on it, but couldn't come up with a way for avoid the gurl krush, so I will just go with it. Ms. Clare could write the warning information in prescriptions, you know the ones that are 4 pages long and written in the tiniest font known to man, yes I would read that if she wrote that. With a magnifying glass, but I would happily read it. Ok, now that I have that out of my system, let me try and review Defiant.

Connor to me was the bad boy of the trio, but I knew that he had a good heart. That fact was backed up by the deals he had made with Wentworth to keep his brothers safe. When he didn't hesitate to go after Sarah only backed up that fact. Now there has already been a ton of great reviews written by my friends so I won't go back over Sarah and Connor's story as you already have that. I thought the whole story well written, as well as heartfelt and became that much more vivid in my mind as the story progressed. This time in history is unique because not too many authors chose this time to write romances in. I love that we get to see how Ian and Morgan are doing with their wives and kids.

What I was surprised about was what she did with Wentworth. She took me through the gamut with him from hating him to downright loving him in the end. He is one of favorite characters with the potential for hero material. She set us up and I can't wait to see where she takes us with him. I could go on for hours about how good the book was, but I know that just isn't possible so I will wrap this up by saying, READ THIS BOOK! I would start with Ian's book to get the full emotional journey of the brothers, but this book could be read on its own. PC puts a lot of heart in her books and it shines through very well in this one.

PS Just one more caveat, I hope we see Joseph's story in the future he is too sexy for words. That is my fan gurl review and I am sticking to it.

** Can't wait to read Defiant. Connor is going to make me swoon

I won this ebook from
Thank you to Dhes for posting the wonderful scene, Thank YOu to her grandson for 'choosing me' and Thank you to Pamela for writing it. The scenes shouldn't have been deleted but I'm glad Dhes shared it with us. Love you guys!!!

In the years to come, when you lie alone in your bed and the night grows long and bitter, remember how it felt when I held you, kissed you, made you mine. Remember this night. Remember me

Remember Defiant. Remember Connor.

I would remember Connor. I would remember every moment with Connor, Sarah and Joseph. They makes me happy when I downloaded the ebook in my Kindle for pc. They makes me happy when I got the paperback version with a colorful cover.

This story was superb BEST among other Mackinnon. I do admit I loved Iain, but after reading Defiant, my heart betrayed me. I fall in love with Connor. He make my heart swoon.

Defiant is sensual and wonderful historical romance. I don't need to read Erotica novel, Defiant provided me with beautiful story that make my heart melt. I feel steamy and get easily aroused when reading Defiant.

Pamela never failed to deliver a good romance. She's a great storyteller and all her historical books are a KEEPER in my shelf.

Highly recommended.

5+++ SPECTACULAR, Whoohooing Stars, not only for this book, but for the whole trilogy.

I feel like I have been waiting forever for Defiant to be written and it was definitely worth the wait. Pamela Clare’s MacKinnon’s series is one of my all time favorites. It is an incredible journey, every single book was spectacular and I would highly recommend to read them in order. They were not stories, but romantic experiences set in the wilderness of the American frontier. Pamela Clare is a master of her craft when she writes her historical romances. Everything feels so authentic from the food, weapons, language, lifestyle, to the way she describes the Indian rituals…it transports you to this harsh time period. The love story and hot, sensual, love scenes she creates are both heartwrenching and breathtaking.

Awe, Connor, the youngest MacKinnon brother where have you been all my life! Connor and his brothers, Iain and Morgan are gods in my book. They are honorable, chivalrous, and brave. They are on a different level in the way they treat women with such tenderness and reverence. Alpha’s and brutal in every sense of the word, but gentle in their commands when it comes to their women. What made Defiant even better, if that is even possible, was that you get to catch up with the older brothers, wives, and babies as well.

This series has the feel of the Last of the Mohicans in time frame and intesity. Connor and Sarah are brought together when she is kidnapped by a war party of Shawnees. Her uncle, General Brigadier William Wentworth (the MacKinnon brothers arch nemesis and boss) asks Connor to do anything he can to rescue her. Well the only thing Connor can do to save her is to marry her and consummate the marriage in an Indian tradition. Sarah is a princess, her great grandfather was the king and her ancestors destroyed and exiled the MacKinnon’s. Sarah is strong and innocent, even though she is scared to death because of her circumstances, she has deep inner strength and courage to face her tormentors. Connor and Sarah fall in love, but they can never be, because of their stations, as well as, many other complications. This all happened in the first 20% of the story…BONUS…because there is 80% of awesomeness to come. The story brought me lots of angst and some tears, but experiencing their hardships made everything so much sweeter.

Funniest line of the book,(regarding manscaping). So you prefer to make women search the bush to find the snake. With today’s view on going hairless, Connor was a real man.

I didn’t want it to end and I will reread it again and again. Pick this series up even if historicals are not your thing, you won’t be disappointed.

First I have to say, when I saw the email come through for Defiant from my old pal, Pamela asking if we wanted to read an early copy of Defiant, I got a little jumpy. But when I got the actual book, well I was like a teenage fan girl who had just scored front row tickets to see One Direction in concert! I was ecstatic, and after reading the book my eagerness was not wasted at all.

Defiant is the lucky third book in the sexy MacKinnon’s Rangers series. This is the story of the youngest MacKinnon, Connor and beautiful Sarah’s journey to find love through all the trials and tribulations that one would ever have to face in a life time. Together the pair overcome (takes deep breath) Indians, kidnappings, murder, nasty rumours, dipshit family members, fear, anger, betrayal and personal issues. This is just such a powerful and emotional story that touched your heart. Hands down, the best story in the series.

Now watch out people because I'm about to go all goo goo eyes on this book and praise it to high heavens!

First lets start with the sexy Scot on the cover. If this is Connor, then let me jump on board be the damsel in distress because this man is built! In fact the cover just skim the surface of this book and its all out perfectness. Pamela’s writing was funny, irresistible, smooth, pulled at your heart strings, romantic and just me writing all these adjectives makes me think I'm depriving you from starting to read this book and seeing for yourself the awesomeness that is Pamela Clare! I haven’t read a book as fast as I read Defiant in a good 6 months. This was the first book I haven’t been able to put down and it was so hard to stop turning page after page after....

The interaction with the Connor and Sarah was perfectly fit for the genre and heart fluttery romantic at times but underneath all that was the constant seriousness of what was going on around them. Pamela Clare was able to maintain the perfect amount of distress, anger and romance throughout the whole story tying in perfectly with Sarah and Connors personal demons that both had to face. I would have given anything at numerous times throughout the book to jump right in and be the one to save Connor from another whipping or save Sarah from being locked in her uncle’s room for one more day. But no matter what, both characters were perfect and I would not change anything about them in any way.

These three MacKinnon brother are hard not to love. They are loyal to boot. Their passion and family roots run deep in their blood and have an honor that always seeing them do the right thing even if I feel like telling them to stick their obligations. They love their women with a fierceness that isn’t seen in this day and age and if I could imagine up just a smidgen of these men in to reality then Zac Efron would be out on his arse in no time.

I love alot of the quotes from the book:

“Dinnae be laughin at me. They went for my cods, so they did! I had to thrust them away, else they’d have plucked me bare there, too. I willna submit my bollocks to such abuse.

Joseph bit his lip, clearly trying to rein in his mirth. “So you prefer to make women search the bush to find the snake?

“M snake is no so small that the lasses must search for it.

Finally in summary, in my opinion Pamela Clare is an author to envy. She seems to have stayed true to roots and not fallen trap to the recent blood bath the authors are getting involved in. This in itself makes Pamela one of the only authors I respect enough to continue reading her books. She takes pride in her work and her home life and family. A truly wonderful woman, mother and author.

What a great series! Loved it! I truly enjoyed this book (& the audio performance- I *heart* Kaleo Griffith! *swoooon*) just as much as I loved the previous two books. The struggles Connor and Sarah endure made the ending that much sweeter for them.
I also totally geeked out (very normal behavior for me, for real) as a result of reading this series and I did some research to learn more about the French and Indian War. I love history but my knowledge about that conflict was seriously lacking. Also, bc I am unfamiliar with New York and the locations of some cities and towns, I looked at maps and Googled pics of the forts mentioned in the series. 🤓 I think that stuff is pretty neat. ☺️

What a truly amazing book. I am once again amazed at Ms. Clare’s talent. Not only does she write a consuming, passionate love story, but she also immerses the reader in the setting and paints a vivid picture of where she wants them to be.

I love the time period that McKinnon’s Rangers series is set in. Most American historicals romances are set in the West, in a dry and barren landscape in which the hero is always a cowboy or the occasional American Indian. Those are all well and good but, being an American myself, I know that there is so much more to our history than the “Wild West that is so often portrayed. This series is set during the French-Indian War, in northeastern US and parts of Canada, during some of the most formative events in the history of the two nations. And the setting of dense forests and chilly winter is another great change of pace.

Connor MacKinnon is the youngest of the brothers, and has now taken over command of the Rangers. He is still under William Wentworth’s control. When Wentworth’s niece is captured by Indians on her way to visit, it is Connor and Joseph that are charged with finding her and bringing her safely back. Meanwhile, Sarah has left England - and her parents strict religious upbringing - under a massive scandal in which she is deemed unmarriageable by the nosy, ridiculous society of London.

So much happens between Connor and Sarah. I bookmarked, and bookmarked over and over again. Their words of love to each other are sigh-worthy. I found myself constantly with a dreamy, goofy look on my face, usually following one of Connor’s heartfelt declarations. Some are sexy as hell, some are romantic enough that I want to write them down and pretend he said them to ME.
There’s a name for what you’re feelin Sarah. Do you ken what it is? “Tis desire.

Connor not only frees Sarah from her captors, but also frees her spirit from the bond of her family’s strict moral rules against basically anything that brings pleasure; and we get to see her go from a woman who has lived a life of lonely luxury to one who is finally coming to understand what it means to live.
“Och, Sarah…Tonight I’ll show you the richness of a man’s loving. I’ll make you forget London and the feckless suitors who deserted you. I’ll do my best to make tonight last a lifetime. In the years to come, when you lie alone in your bed and the night grows long and bitter, remember how it felt when I held you, kissed you, made you mine. Remember this night. Remember me.

Yes, I will, Connor! I’ll also remember Joseph and look forward to his story. He has become such a part of the Rangers, I can’t imagine him not getting his Happily Ever After. Trying to come up with a woman who deserves him, or could handle him…I don’t envy Ms. Clare of the monumental task of that! William Wentworth has been the villain of the series so far. How can he possibly redeem himself or begin to make up for the horrible things that he has done? But as I understand it, he WILL have another appearance. I have faith that Ms. Clare can do it, though I can’t imagine at this point being able to fall in love with HIM. He is absolutely atrocious in this book, and after what he did to Iain, Morgan, and Connor, I almost think he deserves what he gets toward the end.

Pamela Clare certainly has a way with words. There is constantly action, and never a dull moment. I never got bored. Just when i thought I could put the book down and go to sleep (at 2am) I read just ONE more page, and got sucked right back into the story. If you plan on sleeping, for goodness sake, don't kid yourself. Ain't gonna happen. I found myself tearing up and spitting mad, heartbroken and joyful in turns. I couldn't...stop...reading. Connor and Sarah’s story, along with the rest of the MacKinnons, are for sure on my favorites shelf. They deserve a place on any historical romance fan’s shelf. I can’t recommend her enough!!!

This is the story of the youngest MacKinnon brother, Connor, and it's a good one. Several plot threads from the other two books are tied up nicely and everyone lives happily ever after, well, almost everyone. Connor is a complex character who feels his duty deeply as the last MacKinnon to lead the Rangers. He is torn between that duty and the love he feels for Sarah. Sarah finds herself in a world she has no control over and has to depend on Connor for her survival. The violent clash of three cultures makes for a compelling plot and love story. The audio version is long but well done by Kaleo Griffith.

Lady Sarah Woodville is descended from royalty but has been banished to the Americas for an indiscretion she was involved in in London. On her way to her uncle, Lord William Wentworth, she is captured by a Shawnee war party and destined to be the revenge bride for their leader. Gently bred, Sarah has no idea of the harsh realities facing her.

Major Connor MacKinnon and his friend Joseph have been dispatched to find and rescue Sarah. Connor expects Sarah to be just as vile as her uncle and is surprised to find someone totally different. Unable to rescue her, Connor must fight for her with the winner to become her husband.

Sarah is as smart as she is brave and agrees to do whatever it takes to be freed from the Shawnee, even becoming Connor's wife in every way. But as they make their way back to the fort, Sarah and Connor know that what happened in the wilderness must stay in the wilderness. Unfortunately, that was not to be, and Sarah now must try to protect Connor from the wrath of her uncle.

The third in the MacKinnon's Rangers series and just as good if not better than the previous two. I am not a fan of wartime romances and I'd probably not even have considered this series if it had been written by anyone else. But I love Pamela Clare's work and she has a way of grabbing you from the first page and taking you on an incredible journey. She creates the most irresistible heroes and pairs them with wonderfully strong and courageous heroines. This book is Connor's story. Connor is sent to rescue the despised Lord Wentworth's niece. But Connor doesn't find the pampered princess he was expecting. This romance was doomed from the beginning but somehow they will find their happily ever after.

Opening Line: "I didna kill anyone." Connor Mackinnon glared at his two brothers, heavy fetters biting into has wrists and ankles, the iron cold and hard."

Guess who was waiting for me in my mailbox tonight when I got home??? CONNOR!! (I wish it was him literally but) damn he is looking good.
Can't wait to dive in...

Dove in, swam the river, traipsed through the forest, braved the bad guys, -hello forced marriage, shudder, I wish! High anxiety (how are they going to get out of this?) Cried a bit, fell in love a lot, Joseph sigh, Connor big sigh, 1000 lashes, are you freakin kidding me!? -and I thought Iain had it bad! And then surprisingly in the end Wentworth grows worthy of a sigh too and all's well at the Mackinnon farm.
Big contented smile :) Buggy is happy.
