Mr Gwyn
Jasper Gwyn è uno scrittore. Vive a Londra e verosimilmente è un uomo che ama la vita. Tutt'a un tratto ha voglia di smettere. Forse di smettere di scrivere, ma la sua non è la crisi che affligge gli scrittori senza ispirazione. Jasper Gwyn sembra voler cambiare prospettiva, arrivare al nocciolo di una magia. Art, if only you were able to portray character and soul, no painting on earth would be more beautiful.

Lately I got intrigued by several interviews in which people mentioned Mr. Gwyn as one of their favourite contemporary novels. A magazine even started an interview format referring to the list Baricco’s protagonist - Mr. Jasper Gwyn, a celebrated novelist� publishes in the Guardian, a list of 52 things he’ll never do again � last thing writing books - a reverse bucket list in a way.
Jasper Gwyn desires to vanish from the literary circus and says goodbye to his wide audience. Admittedly feeling the need to continue to confide words to paper, he seeks a new breadwinning in delivering ‘written portraits� commissioned for big money, not to be published, for exclusive reading of the portrayed subject only. These portraits are to be written in a painstakingly controlled design setting, as in a painter’s atelier (apparently inspired by the work and methods of Lucian Freud), the subjects undress in sittings of 4 hours, observed by Gwyn. Talking and touch is dissuaded. After 30 days Gwyn hands them their exclusive reads, their written portraits, invariably deeply moving, amazing and delighting his clients� a intimate exchange between Gwyn and the client, as the reader is cautiously kept outside of this blissful and delicate relationship, not getting to read one single of these portraits in the novel. Baricco leaves it to the imagination of the reader to wonder what the client sees reflected in the meticulously enwrapped few sheets of paper he or she receives.
While Jasper Gwyn stays elusive and enigmatic as a character � no self-portrait is included in the assortment of 10 portraits he will write and he even seems to efface himself gradually from the novel - the reader gets more acquainted with a few of his portrayed subjects, predominantly with his assistant Rebecca (with whom he starts his verbal experiment) and his ex-literary agent. Out of the portraits, each of which Gwyn keeps one copy, Baricco creates mystery and an ingeniously constructed literary quest, playing narrative games with his characters and the dumbfounded reader.
We are all a few pages of a book, but of a book that no one has ever written and that we search for in vain in the bookshelves of our mind.
Notable is Mr. Gwyn’s/Baricco’s vision on the redundancy of conversation to create intimacy and deep understanding with his subjects � which reminded me of the wordless interaction between the French silkworm trader and his Japanese concubine in Baricco’s novella . Visiting an art gallery, Mr. Gwyn remarks he doesn’t like paintings because they are mute. ‘They’re like people who move their lips to speak, but you don’t hear their voice. You have to imagine it. I don’t like to make that effort�. Mr. Gwyn aspires his literary portraits to surpass the inadequacy of visual portraits, suggesting the written word is a better medium than paint or photography to capture the inner essence, the soul and the character of a person. This insight, coming from a novelist, might not come across as overly surprising. What are characters drawn in novels often other than multidimensional written portraits?
We aren’t characters, we’re stories. We stop at the idea of being a character engaged in who knows what adventure, even a very simple one, but what we have to understand is that we are the whole story, not just that character. We are the wood where he walks, the bad guy who cheats him, the mess around him, all the people who pass, the color of things, the sounds.
Mr. Gwyn reads like a dreamy fairy-tale on identity, perception, choice and on the (im)possibility to re-invent oneself, a philosophical journey to the essence of writing, set in a light and humorous tone, meditating on questions like how deep we really can get through another human being and to ourselves, and if radical change can also divulge in what more appears like modulations or ripples in an immutable substance.
Like in Silk, Baricco by his smooth and breezy prose creates an atmospheric, alluring music of suggestion and imagination. Reflecting on the essence of reading and writing and both the distance and the complicity in the unique relationship between an author and a reader, Mr. Gwyn might be a compelling and charming read for anyone fascinated by the world of books and writing.

Call me peevish, but it bothered me that Baricco, ostensibly in order to expel any physical attraction between Mr. Gwyn and Rebecca during the modelling sessions, repeats ad nauseam Rebecca is ‘overweight but beautiful�, making me wonder if he deems the beauty and charm of a woman defying the current norms on body size that implausible he feels the need to convince both himself and the reader of this troubling fact.
Some editions in English also encompass the novella Three times at dawn () which Baricco wrote after Mr. Gwyn and is connected to it.

În legătură cu textul lui Baricco am găsit nu de mult cel mai tare compliment: romanul Mr Gwyn ar fi un „mystery cerebral�.
Mr Gwyn mi-a adus aminte de ăٲ. Secțiuni scurte (doar Vonnegut mai scria așa), fraze repetate ritual, dezlegări imprevizibile. Baricco e un prozator mai degrabă inteligent decît talentat. Intriga e foarte ingenioasă și complet neverosimilă (putem citi romanul ca pe o parabolă în care indivizii concreți nu contează), compusă „din cap�: personajele nu au nici o psihologie, chiar dacă Mr Gwyn, scribul, copistul, sfîrșește prin a redacta un soi de portrete psihologice, de mare succes în rîndul publicului și pentru care primește o groază de bani.
Tocmai vizitase o galerie de artă. Plecase complet nemulțumit: „nu-i plac tablourile, sînt mute; seamănă cu un individ care își mișcă buzele, dar nu are voce�. Decide să-i concureze pe pictori. În loc de culori, va folosi propoziții: va redacta, așadar, „portrete de cuvinte�, singurele adevărate.
Ultima parte devine cu adevărat o enigmă care se cuvine soluționată de un detectiv priceput. Iar acest detectiv tenace va fi Rebecca, cel dintîi „model� al portretistului și secretara fostului viitor prozator. Ea va dovedi faptul că Mr Jasper Gwyn nu a renunțat niciodată la meteahna scrisului (cum anunțase în The Guardian, suplimentul de duminică) și nici la aceea a publicării. Doar că acum se ascunde sub un pseudonim feminin și locuiește niciunde.
În legătură cu sugestia lui Baricco am o mică obiecție. Că viața oricărui individ poate deveni o poveste (iar povestea rezumă o identitate) nu cred că se îndoiește nimeni. Și nici nu constituie un secret strivitor, accesibil doar minților geniale. În fond, sufletul nu se străvede prin piele, tot la cuvînt ajungi. Cînd pretinde că Mr Gwyn sesizează psihicul „pacienților� doar cu privirea, autorul glumește. Romanul lui Alessandro Baricco este, în fond, o glumă și trebuie luat ca atare. Pe mine, unul, m-a amuzat...
P. S. Modelele - în majoritate femei - pozează nud (și au interdicția de a se exprima), dar naratorul nu are ochi pentru ele și nu ne dă amănunte. Doar despre Rebecca spune cu maximă gentilețe masculină că este „o frumusețe iremediabilă�. O astfel de frumusețe e impoosibil de vizualizat...

" في أحد الأيام أدركت أنه لم يعد يهمني أي شئ وأن كل شئ يؤلمني إلي حد الموت
ألساندرو باريكو الكاتب الذي يخيفني ويجذبني في ذات الوقت .
لماذا ؟
حسنا ، كان أول لقاء بيننا سئ بالنسبة لي مع روايته "حرير" ثم كان بيننا لقاء ناجح وممتع مع رواية " ١٩٠٠ مونولوج عازف البيانو في المحيط " ثم لقاء ثالث تحمست له كثيرا لكن لم أستطع إكماله "البحر المحيط " .لذا فمن الطبيعي والمنطقي أن أتردد قبل خوض محاولة رابعة. لكن أحيانا نحن نختار الكتاب وأحيانا أخرى يقوم الكتاب بإختيارنا وهذا ما حدث مع مستر غوين .
واستطاع إليساندرو جذبي من البداية فها هو الكاتب جاسبر غوين يقرر فجأة وهو في عز تألقه ونجاحه الادبي أن يعتزل الكتابة .
" كانت موهبته في الحكي لا يعتريها اي شك ، بل وكانت السهولة التي بها يتمكن من الدخول في ذهن الشخصيات ويعيد بناء مشاعرهم تثير الحيرة. كان يبدو كأنه يعرف العبارات التي سيقولها كل منهم، وأنه يفكر مقدماً بذهنهم . وكان بديهياً أن يتنبئ له الكثيرون، في تلك الأعوام ، بمستقبل مهني رائع.
لكن في عمر الثالثة والأربعين يكتب جاسبر للجارديان مقالا يعدد فيه اثنين وخمسين شيئا لن يفعلها أبدا بدءاً من ذلك اليوم . وكان الشئ الأخير هو : تأليف الكتب ."
ليس لنضوب أفكاره أو شعوره بالملل من الكتابه لكن هناك اشخاص لايحبون الشهرة، لا يحبون كونهم تحت الأضواء. يصيبهم الآخرون بنوع من الرهبة ، هناك موقف حدث مع غوين بعد اعتزاله للكتابة كان من المفترض ان يذهب لزيارة ما وكل ما كان يخيفه انه سيقابل أشخاصاً سيسألونه عن كتابه القادم ، وماذا يكتب . كان يخاف حين يسأله احدهم " هل انت جاسبر غوين " .
" كان جاسبر غوين قد انزلق في عزلة يمكن للآخرين تفسيرها على أنها انحدار، ولكنه كان هو يحاول ان يعيشها كأنها انعتاق . كان مقتنعا أنه بعد اثني عشر عاما من العرض العام غير الطبيعي، الذي كان شيئا حتمياً بسبب عمله مؤلفا، كان يستحق شكلا ما من أشكال التعافي "
أحيانا يكون هناك شيئا هو سر سعادتنا وتعاستنا في ذات الوقت وليس من السهل تقبل ذلك او التعامل معه . هو شئ نتنفس من خلاله ونحيا به لكن في ذات الوقت قد يكون ما يجعلنا نختنق ببطء .
"وضع معروف لدى كثير من البشر، ولكن هذا لا يقلل من كونه مؤلماً . إن الشئ الوحيد الذي يجعلهم يشعرون بالحياة ، هو نفسه ، المقدر له ان يقضي عليهم ببطء . مثل الأبناء بالنسبة للوالدين، نجاح الفنانين، الجبال شاهقة الارتفاع لمتسلقي الألب ، تأليف الكتب بالنسبة إلى جاسبر غوين "
قرر غوين إعتزال الكتابة وان يبحث عن عمل آخر ، لكن ، هل إعتزال الكتابة عمل سهل ؟ هل يمكن لشخص عاشق للكتابة أن يتركها ؟، هل يمكن إعتزال الكتابة من شخص يجد متعة خاصة في تركيب الجمل وكتابتها ، شخص لم تكن الكتابة بالنسبة له مجرد مهنة يقوم بها بل يجد نفسه وحياته بها !!
نجح غوين في البداية لكن لم يلبث أن شعر بالاشتياق للكتابة، كان يفتقد العناية اليومية التي كان ينظم بها افكاره.
" كان لابد لجاسبر غوين أن يعترف لنفسه بأن تركه الكتب خلق لديه فراغاً لم يعرف كيف يعالجه إلا من خلال وضع طقوس بديلة غير كاملة وتلقائية مثل ترتيب عبارات في ذهنه أو ربط الحذاء ببطء غبي. فقد قضي أعواماً ليقبل أن مهنة الكتابة أصبحت مستحيلة، والآن يجد نفسه مجبراً أن يسجل كيف أنه دون تلك المهنة لم يعد في إمكانه التقدم ال الأمام بسهولة "
ماذا سيفعل غوين ؟ ومارد فعل وكيله الادبي ؟ وكيف سيرضي غوين رغبته في الكتابه ورغبته في البعد عنها في ذات الوقت؟!
حسنا ، سيجد غوين طريقة ليحاول ان يحتال على قراره بترك الكتابة وعدم كتابة كتب مرة أخرى .سيصبح ناسخاً،
سيقوم بكتابة بورتريهات للأشخاص، نعم في العادة كلمة بورتريه خاصة بال��سامين لكن غوين ليس رسام ، إنه كاتب . فكيف سيقوم بكتابة البورتريهات ؟ ولمن؟و ما معني ذلك من الأساس !! وهل سينجح ؟ وهنا ستظهر لنا ريبيكا بدور قوى فهل ستساعده ام ستثنيه عن أفكاره؟
� - لقد فكرت ان عمل اللوحات الشخصية يعجبني.
-- لن يتعلق الأمر بلوحات ، اريد ان اكتب البورتريهات .
لكن كل شئ آخر سيكون كما يتم مع اللوحات .. ستوديو ، موديل ، كل شئ سيكون مشابهاً.

اسلوب الرواية جميل وجذبتني الفكرة واندمجت معها . رواية مختلفة .
" كلنا عبارة عن بضع صفحات في كتاب ، لكنه كتاب لم يقرأه أحد قط ، وإننا نبحث بلا جدوى في أرفف ذهننا . "

"وضع معروف لدى كثير من البشر، ولكن هذا لا يقلل من كونه مؤلماً . إن الشئ الوحيد الذي يجعلهم يشعرون بالحياة ، هو نفسه ، المقدر له ان يقضي عليهم ببطء . مثل الأبناء بالنسبة للوالدين، نجاح الفنانين، الجبال شاهقة الارتفاع لمتسلقي الألب ، تأليف الكتب بالنسبة إلى جاسبر غوين "
قرر غوين إعتزال الكتابة وان يبحث عن عمل آخر ، لكن ، هل إعتزال الكتابة عمل سهل ؟ هل يمكن لشخص عاشق للكتابة أن يتركها ؟، هل يمكن إعتزال الكتابة من شخص يجد متعة خاصة في تركيب الجمل وكتابتها ، شخص لم تكن الكتابة بالنسبة له مجرد مهنة يقوم بها بل يجد نفسه وحياته بها !!
نجح غوين في البداية لكن لم يلبث أن شعر بالاشتياق للكتابة، كان يفتقد العناية اليومية التي كان ينظم بها افكاره.
" كان لابد لجاسبر غوين أن يعترف لنفسه بأن تركه الكتب خلق لديه فراغاً لم يعرف كيف يعالجه إلا من خلال وضع طقوس بديلة غير كاملة وتلقائية مثل ترتيب عبارات في ذهنه أو ربط الحذاء ببطء غبي. فقد قضي أعواماً ليقبل أن مهنة الكتابة أصبحت مستحيلة، والآن يجد نفسه مجبراً أن يسجل كيف أنه دون تلك المهنة لم يعد في إمكانه التقدم ال الأمام بسهولة "
ماذا سيفعل غوين ؟ ومارد فعل وكيله الادبي ؟ وكيف سيرضي غوين رغبته في الكتابه ورغبته في البعد عنها في ذات الوقت؟!
حسنا ، سيجد غوين طريقة ليحاول ان يحتال على قراره بترك الكتابة وعدم كتابة كتب مرة أخرى .سيصبح ناسخاً،
سيقوم بكتابة بورتريهات للأشخاص، نعم في العادة كلمة بورتريه خاصة بال��سامين لكن غوين ليس رسام ، إنه كاتب . فكيف سيقوم بكتابة البورتريهات ؟ ولمن؟و ما معني ذلك من الأساس !! وهل سينجح ؟ وهنا ستظهر لنا ريبيكا بدور قوى فهل ستساعده ام ستثنيه عن أفكاره؟
� - لقد فكرت ان عمل اللوحات الشخصية يعجبني.
-- لن يتعلق الأمر بلوحات ، اريد ان اكتب البورتريهات .
لكن كل شئ آخر سيكون كما يتم مع اللوحات .. ستوديو ، موديل ، كل شئ سيكون مشابهاً.

اسلوب الرواية جميل وجذبتني الفكرة واندمجت معها . رواية مختلفة .
" كلنا عبارة عن بضع صفحات في كتاب ، لكنه كتاب لم يقرأه أحد قط ، وإننا نبحث بلا جدوى في أرفف ذهننا . "

Mr Gwyn

Quando leggo un libro di Baricco, ho come l’impressione di sedermi davanti ad un pianoforte, aprire lo spartito ed iniziare a suonare.
Ogni volta che leggiamo una frase,parola per parola, nota per nota, è come se stessimo eseguendo la sinfonia che lui ha composto per noi.
E come per la musica, ad ogni nota, siamo rapiti da un mondo cosi magico, affascinante e ipnotizzante che, quando ci rendiamo conto di essere vivi, sulla terra, magari sopra ad un letto, un divano, o in un autobus circondati da altra gente, rimaniamo confusi e disorientati per un po�.
E� questo che provo ogni volta, ed è questo che ho provato leggendo Mr Gwyn .
Ce l’ha fatta Baricco a scrivere una storia, sì, una storia vera, con dei personaggi veri, una trama vera con un senso compiuto.
Non che me ne importasse molto, quando ami il suo modo di scrivere, non ti interessa granchè se in quelle pagine sta descrivendo una vita,una faccia, un paesaggio o la lista della spesa.
Ma, se siete tra quelli che odiano le sue trame sconclusionate apprezzandone comunque la struttura allora Mr Gwyn farà al caso vostro.
Chi è questo famoso Jasper Gwyn? Ma è Alessandro Baricco, ovvio.
E� un famoso scrittore che non vuole più esserlo. Scrive una lista di cinquantadue cose che non farà mai più e la invia al Guardian. Gli ultimi due punti della lista sono:
51: Pubblicare Libri.
52: Scrivere Libri.
Sì, ma non è cosi semplice.
Chi scrive lo fa per mettere in ordine pensieri nella forma rettilinea della frase ; smettendo di farlo, questi pensieri si ammassano nella mente e creano un groviglio incredibile che da qualche parte cercherà di risolversi.
E allora, Mr Gwyn dovrà trovare un compromesso, qualcosa che gli permetta di compiere il gesto dello scrivere senza però rompere la promessa.
Troverà una soluzione: c’entreranno diciotto lampadine Caterina de i Medici, una melodia di 60 ore e un letto.
Cosa ne verrà fuori è una genialata che solo Baricco poteva escogitare, una “Bariccata�, passatemi il termine.
L’incantesimo, almeno per me, ha funzionato anche sta volta.
Anche se, c’� un anche se.
Ed è quello che mi ha impedito di assegnare cinque stelle a questo libro: c’� troppa trama.
E� difficile da capire per chi non ha mai letto niente di suo.
Nei suoi libri trovavi di tutto, poesia, follia, musica� ma non una trama ben delineata.
In Mr Gwyn Baricco ha scelto la trama, a discapito di tutto il resto perché non possono coesistere equamente entrambe le cose .
Questo sarà senza dubbio un punto a favore per molti, moltissimi, forse sarà uno dei libri maggiormente apprezzati dalla critica: “Baricco ha scritto una storia, finalmente!�;
ma io, che leggo i suoi libri non con il cervello, ma con il cuore, ho sentito la mancanza della magia che tanto ho amato in lui.
Nonostante questo, se amate Baricco questo libro sarà una conferma, se non lo avete mai apprezzato avrete l’opportunità di cambiare idea.
“Lo faceva nella luce di una felicità strana, che non aveva mai provato, e che pure, le parve, aveva portato con sé per anni, aspettandola.
Le sembrò impossibile essere riuscita a fare altro, in tutto quel tempo, che custodirla e nasconderla. Di cosa siamo capaci pensò. Crescere, amare , fare figli, invecchiare � e tutto questo mentre anche siamo altrove, nel tempo lungo di una risposta non arrivata, o di un gesto non finito. Quanti sentieri, e a che passo differente li risaliamo, in quello che sembra un unico viaggio.�

ذات نهار مشمس ودافئ، وبينما أبحث عن رواية صغيرة أقرأها لتمضية الوقت، وقع اختياري على "مستر غوين" ربما بسبب تجاربي السابقة العظيمة والممتعة مع "أليساندرو باريكو". وربما لأني قرأت مسبقاً عنها وأعلم مضمون الرواية، فقررت أن أخوض تجربة ثالثة مع باريكو وشخصياته المرسومة بعناية.
في البداية، دعني أطرح عليك سؤالاً، كم مرة شعرت بالرغبة في التوقف عن فعل شيءٍ ما؟ وخاصة لو كان هذا الشيء هو عملك أو روتينك اليومي أو مصدر رزقك. ولكن، هذا السؤال لا يأتي بمفرده أبداً، فماذا ستفعل بعد أن تتوقف؟ هل ينبغي علينا ألا نتوقف، وإذا توقفنا، هل ينبغي علينا أن نفعل شيئاً ما؟ أسئلة كثيرة قد تصيبنا في بعض الأحيان. لا أريد أن تشغل تفكيرك في الإجابة الآن، ولكن سأقص عليك حكاية صديقي الجديد السيد غوين.
"جاسبر غوين" كاتب وروائي، في منتصف الأربعينات، متواضع لا يحب الشهرة كثيراً له روتين خاص به. ذات يوم وأثناء سيره في شوارع لندن وتحديدا في ريجنت بارك، شعر أنه ينبغي عليه التوقف عن عدة أشياء، وعلى الرغم أن هذه الفكرة قد خطرت له كثيراً، ولكنه قد عزم على التوقف هذه المرة. وعندما عاد إلى منزله قرر أن يكتب قائمة مكونة من اثنين وخمسين شيئاً لن يفعله بعد ذلك. كان أولها: ألا يكتب مقالات للجارديان، وآخرها ألا يؤلف كتباُ. ثم أرسل المقالة إلى صحيفة الجارديان. وبهذه المقالة قد أنهى مستقبله المهني الرائع.
بعد فترة من التوقف عن الكتابة، يشعر غوين بشيء غريب في حياته، يفتقد بشدة إلى فعل الكتابة. بعد عدة محاولات لشغل وقته بأي شيء يمكن عمله، يجد أن عملية الكتابة تلك التي كانت ترهقه في الماضي هي مبتغاه الآن، لا يستطيع ألا يكتب. عند هذه النقطة تذكرت حديث نجيب محفوظ في أحد لقاءاته عندما قال"مغادرة رغبة الكتابة هي يوم موتي"، هكذا كان الحال مع صديقينا جاسبر غوين. ولذلك قرر أن يعمل كـ"ناسخ" حتى يتسنى له ممارسة الكتابة. وذات يوم ممطر وجد نفسه بالصدفة -بعد أن أخطأ في الطريق- أمام معرض للفنون. فقرر أن يحتمي من المطر ويدخل ذلك المعرض، دون أن يعرف أن الساعات التالية ستغير حياته إلى الأبد. أوه، ليس ما ظننت يا عزيزي، لن يرسم لوحات، بل سيكتبها! نعم، سيقوم بكتابة بورتريهات لأشخاص. ربما تكون فكرة غريبة وغير مفهومة. حتى مستر غوين نفسه لا يعرف ما يقصد تحديداً ولكن الفكرة قائمة. وبالفعل سيقوم بتجهيز مكان خاص ليقوم فيه بكتابة بورتريهات بطريقته الخاصة، فهل سينجح في عمل شيء هو نفسه لا يعرفه تحديداً؟!
على صعيد آخر، هناك "توم" صديق غوين المقرب، وكيله وناشره الذي لا يتوانى عن تقديم نصائحه لصديقه الحميم. منذ البداية سنجد توم يحاول أن يثني جاسبر عن قراره وينصحه بالتراجع أو بأخذ أجازة ربما لو كان يرغب في ذلك ثم معاودة الكتابة، ربما ستشعر أنه يطلب منه ذلك بسبب مصالحه المشتركة مع غوين، ولكن مع الوقت ستدرك أنه صديق حقيقي، فنصائحه كنصائح "سنتشو " لـ "دون كيخوته". وهناك أيضاً "ريبيكا" التي تعمل لدى توم والتي ستدخل حياة غوين لتساعده على تنفيذ فكرته المجنونة. وأيضاً الشخصية التي أثارت اعجابي بشدة، هي شخصية "مالوري" ذلك الرجل الذي قرأ كل شيء، ولديه ذاكرة قوية، ويرتدي دائما سترة ورباطة عنق لأنه دائماً ما يقول أنه يجب التعامل مع الكتب بإحترام حتى البشع منها.
الغريب والمميز في هذه الرواية، هو إيقاع الأحداث، سنجد في ثلثي الرواية إيقاع هادئ وبطئ يجرفك معه بهدوء وحذر. أما الثلث الأخير فهو مخصص للمفاجآت والإجابة عن كل الأسئلة المطروحة في الرواية بسرعة بالغة تماماً كالصفعات، ستشعر معها وكأن "باريكو" يمسك بدلاء من الثلج ويسكبها فوق رأسك. حرفياً هذا ما شعرت به. فصديقنا مستر غوين لديه حياة سرية ستكشف عنها الصفحات الأخيرة من الرواية. وإذا كان هناك سبب يرجع لكتابة الرواية بهذا الأسلوب، فهو ما أراده باريكو أن يشعرك به مع شخصياته، فـ غوين كان يعيش برتابة وملل ولذلك أراد باريكو أن يجعل من النص مرآة لحياة شخصياته، وعلى العكس في الثلث الأخير عندما تحولت الأحداث وتغيرت الشخصيات.
في النهاية، تجربة غريبة ومثيرة، ربما شعرت بالملل قليلاً في المنتصف، وذلك بسبب بطء الإيقاع كما قلت، ولكن في النهاية فاجئني باريكو بحرفية تامة. بالإضافة إلى دقة رسمه للشخصيات، فدائماً هناك شخصيات لا تنسى في أعماله.

A very hard book to define, somewhat of a challenge, a quest or is the author playing mind games? Hard to say but I felt the strangeness and the atmosphere of this novel, compelling for some reason. An author decides to stop writing books against his agent's advice. The author decides to be a copyist, writing portraits instead of drawing them. The conditions he does this from are very detailed and his subjects seem satisfied at the end. But how does one write a portrait? He never in the main body of the story shares one of these completed "portraits" with the reader.
By books end the author has disappeared, but to where? A book within a book, a new story is begun, set in different years, and contain some of the written portraits that had been done. Do we get all the answers in this small book? Not sure, I did get some but I need to re-read that section.
The writing is fantastic, the journey almost hallucinatory, yet I was drawn to this story and am sure it is one I will never forget, both for its uniqueness and its strangeness.

O kişinin yürüdüğü ormanız, onu aldatan kötü insanız, çevresindeki karmaşayız, geçen tüm insanlarız, nesnelerin rengiyiz, gürültüleriz. Anlayabiliyor musunuz?�
Anlayabiliyor musunuz? diye soracağım ben de. Bu anlaması güç bir şey zira.

"Jasper Gwyn mi ha insegnato che non siamo personaggi, siamo storie. Ci fermiamo all'idea di essere un personaggio impegnato in chissà quale avventura, anche semplicissima, ma quel che dovremmo capire è che noi siamo tutta la storia, non solo quel personaggio. Siamo il bosco dove cammina, il cattivo che lo frega, il casino che c'è attorno, tutta la gente che passa, il colore delle cose, i rumori."
Ormai ho imparato che Baricco è uno di quegli scrittori dei quali potresti leggerti l'intera bibliografia, ed anche i temi delle elementari e le liste della spesa, o che so, i bollettini postali, tutto ciò che riesci a immaginare; ma che pur leggendo tutto questo e anche più, non riuscirai mai a conoscere davvero. Ed ora vi spiego perché, secondo me, si verifica il suddetto astruso fenomeno.
Paragoniamo un libro qualunque di Baricco ad una torta, per esempio.
(Per esempio un corno: sono chiusa in questo studio dall'ora di pranzo, mi sto annoiando a morte e sto crepando di fame quindi parlo di torte, va bene?)
Bene, una torta, dicevamo. La ricetta della pasta è sempre la stessa. Dosi uguali, ingredienti uguali. Riconosceresti la mano del pasticciere ovunque, perché quella pasta ha un odore particolare, un sapore particolare, un colore particolare.
Ma ad ogni dolce che sforna, il nostro fantasioso pasticciere dona alla sua creazione una caratteristica diversa, che la diastingue da tutte le altre: per una sarà un ripieno di crema, per un'altra una spezia orientale, per un'altra ancora pezzetti di frutta candita.
Così sono le storie di Baricco. La sostanza è la stessa -lo stile è quello, la mano inconfondibile- ma procedendo con la lettura ti ritrovi in bocca quel sapore speciale che sai di poter trovare in quel racconto e in nessun altro, mai più.
E' questo ciò che amo di questo scrittore. L'unicità dei suoi lavori, che sono strambi, sì, folli ancora di più, ma altrettanto incantevoli.
In questo Mr Gwyn, udite udite, abbiamo una storia. Una storia vera, intendo, con tanto di svolgimento non troppo inverosimile. E che storia.
Non sarà il Baricco di Novecento, d'accordo, ma grazie a Dio non è neppure il Baricco di Seta. Una via di mezzo più che accettabile. Anzi, ben più che accettabile: piacevole, coinvolgente, interessante.
Ed eccovi narrata più o meno ragionevolmente la storia di come questo autore si guadagnò un posto fisso nel mio cuore.
Ora, se non vi spiace, vado a mangiare.

Yazar ana karakter Mr. Gwyn bir anda yaptığı birçok şeyi bırakmaya karar veriyor. Kitap yazmak da bunlardan biri. Aslında sevilen, başarılı bir yazarken birden artık yapamayacağını anlıyor ve bambaşka arayışlara giriyor. Tabi yayıncısı falan vazgeçirmeye çalışıyor. 'Kopyacı' olmaya karar veriyor ama nasıl bir şey olduğundan pek emin değil. Akabinde yaptığı ve başarılı olduğu iş ise (söyleyemem spoiler olur) başarılı oluyor. Gwyn arayışta olduğu şeyi bulabiliyor mu peki?
Çok beğendim, tavsiye ederim.

Very intriguing premise, beautiful writing, but the second half of the book was quite dissapointing. All the charm and intrigue of the first half was lost after abrupt change.

Non mi sono mai schierata nel pro/contro Baricco la cui scrittura (così come la sua persona) non mi disturba affatto ma, al contrario, mi lascia abbastanza indifferente.
Sarà per questo motivo che sono entrata in questa storia senza pregiudizi.
La scoperta che Jasper Gwyn fa rispetto alla sua vita (”ebbe d’un tratto la limpida sensazione che quanto faceva ogni giorno per guadagnarsi da vivere non era più adatto a lui.�) è pari ad un’illuminazione.
Un attimo da cogliere in cui la percezione di sé si offre alla luce della coscienza per poi ritornare nell’ombra dei gesti quotidiani.
Mr Gwyn vive una singolare forma di disagio così decide di non essere più uno scrittore salvo poi accorgersi che gli mancava il gesto dello scrivere.
Comincia così una ricerca per riempire un vuoto.
La soluzione è qualcosa che prende forma come fosse un'installazione di arte postmoderna a cui Mr Gwyn aggiunge un aurea magica...
Una storia metaforica che procede a piccoli passi.
Una scrittura precisa ed elegante per una storia che in sè non mi ha coinvolto.
Insomma, ma un po� come una minestra senza sale.
"D’altronde quella cura ossessiva nell’accosto al mondo � quel modo di allacciarsi le scarpe � non era poi qualcosa di molto diverso dallo scrivere le cose invece che viverle � dall’indugiare su aggettivi e avverbi � e così Jasper Gwyn dovette ammettere con se stesso che l’abbandono dei libri aveva generato un vuoto a cui non sapeva ovviare se non allestendo liturgie sostitutive imperfette e provvisorie come il mettere insieme frasi nella sua mente o allacciarsi le scarpe con una lentezza da idiota.
Ci aveva messo anni ad accettare che il mestiere di scrivere gli era diventato impossibile e adesso si trovava costretto a registrare come senza quel mestiere non gli fosse affatto facile tirare avanti.
Così finì per capire che si trovava in una situazione nota a molti umani, ma non per questo meno dolorosa: ciò che, solo, li fa sentire vivi, è qualcosa che però, lentamente, è destinato ad ammazzarli"

Mr. Gwyn…Even after “sitting in thought�, I still don’t know how to characterize this novel. It’s not for everyone. It’s like reading a dream. It starts out simple and straightforward. And then, it gets “artsy� to the point that you think you’re reading about some really out there performance art. And then, it truly does cut off from reality, but in a good way.
The novel begins at the start of a life journey of Jasper Gwyn. He’s an author, but has decided that he will never write another novel. Then begins self-induced introspection of what he wants to do with his life. Jasper makes it his quest to find the perfect next step of his life. Ultimately, he decides he’s going to be a “copyist� and write portraits of people, even though he doesn’t know what that even means. He sets up a studio and figures that he’ll figure it out when he begins to work. This part of the novel requires the reader to detach from reality.
The second part of the novel was my favorite. It’s a “portrait� in a book that has three stories in it that take place in a hotel at three different times of the same two main characters, with age differences in each story. In the first story the main characters are the same age; in the second story the man is older and the girl is 17; in the last story, the woman is older and the boy is 13. I needed to read the first story again to “get it�, they all tied together, in a dream like way.
It’s a short book, beautifully written with lots of illusion. I really liked it, but it’s not a basic straightforward novel. For me, it was a fabulous read.

Es el tercer libro que leo de Baricco y pese a lo que todo el mundo piensa de Seda este le da diez mil vueltas. De hecho hoy por hoy pienso en Seda y tengo un recuerdo demasiado cursi de esa historia...
Esta es sencillamente una historia sb un escritor y sb escribir y lo que puede llegar a significar, me ha parecido brillante, sensible y muy original.
Se lo recomendaría a cualquiera.

Попаднах случайно на тази книга и се радвам, че се случи така.
Един уморен от суетата писател решава да се оттегли и да създава портрети.
Всичко изглежда доста налудно, но се оказва болезнено истинско.
Книгата повдига въпроси за ролята на писателя в (пре)създаването и рушенето на светове, за едва доловимата граница между литературния герой и неговия прототип, за деликатните взаимоотношения между пишещия и неговия обект.
Всичко е описано по един нежен начин, като обяснение в любов към занаята на писането.
Един уморен от суетата писател решава да се оттегли и да създава портрети.
Всичко изглежда доста налудно, но се оказва болезнено истинско.
Книгата повдига въпроси за ролята на писателя в (пре)създаването и рушенето на светове, за едва доловимата граница между литературния герой и неговия прототип, за деликатните взаимоотношения между пишещия и неговия обект.

Merece cada una de las cinco estrellas y una nota, porque rebasa lo que una simple calificación pueda decir de él. Es, además de una historia tan bella y suave como la seda o como la luz de las tardes de abril, una exquisita y absolutamente nada académica exploración de lo que significa hacer literatura. Del placer de leer, de lo humano, lo profundamente humano que es todo ese maravilloso, bellísimo quehacer. Es tal la magnitud del logro de Baricco sobre el problema de hacer que cada personaje sea, no uno más alrededor del protagonista, sino indiscernible de éste en su cualidad de núcleo de la historia, que al acabar el libro el lector no puede ni quiere hacer distinciones. Cada personaje fue protagonista de su propia vida y a la vez centro del total de la historia, no sólo un satélite de un personaje central. Es un logro formidable: ¡un libro sin personajes secundarios!
Por supuesto, hay mucho de metáfora en esta última aseveración, pero el amor, el exquisito amor con que Baricco retrata a cada personaje lo hace protagonista en toda regla. El Baricco de este libro es enorme. Esta pequeña novelita es un homenaje a quienes vivimos con toda el alma y el cuerpo el hecho literario. Un homenaje a la belleza de leer y escribir y, por ende, de tratar de captar lo humano y la influencia de su aura en todo lo que le rodea. El Baricco de este libro es un escritor cuyo profundo placer por contar historias, por capturar personajes memorables en líneas cándidas y ligeras, se transmite sin tregua al no menos gozoso y afortunado lector.
Quizás es posible que en las páginas de este libro haya encontrado, sin saberlo, mi propio retrato también.

Enigmatic, puzzling, mysterious, elusive ... these are the most recurring valuations in the reviews about this book. And I recognize myself in these views. What is this book about? A writer struggling with a writer's block? An artist who has found an original way to fathom the essence of another human person? Erasing yourself completely as a writer, both in real and in fictional existence? A variation on the Bartleby theme by Herman Melville (a person that refuses to exert the ordinary actions of life) ? Being human as a constructed story? Knowing yourself only by the way others see you? Etc. Etc.
Don't expect any answers, I have not found them in this booklet, and that is at once the frustration and the charm of it. ‘Mr Gwyn� really catpivates, but also contains many loose ends: the ambiguous relationship between Jasper Gwyn and secretary Rebecca, for example, the possibility to understand someone by silently observing him or her for 32 days, without interaction, and so on; and then there are the cliché elements such as the narrative character of every human life, a writer who hides behind various pseudonyms, and so on.
It seems that all these questions are partially answered in the next novel by Baricco, ‘Three times at dawn�. So maybe I should take that one on. In the meantime Baricco proves that he remains an intriguing writer who perfectly controls the art of creating mesmerizing novels.

أنا أحب قلم باريكو، فهو قلم قادر على ابهارك منذ لحظة دخولك في الرواية، قلم حي تمتزج بكلمات حية ونظرات للعالم بصورة أكثر خفة ولطافة، يشعرك باريكو بواقع الإنسان، بلا ترتيبته، فوضاه، عالمه المصغر، الذي يموج تارة بالخوف وأخرى بالمضي قدماً، عالم صارم أحياناً، إنسان تعجز أن تفهمه ولكنك رغم ذلك تحبه وتحاول أن تتفهم دوافعه وتغييراته وبل جموده العجيب ..
فكرة الرواية جميلة وساحرة، حيث يدور حول فعل الكتابة، أن تكتب وتمارس الكتابة ثم تقرر في يوم ما أن تتوقف نهائياً عن الكتابة، أن تمتنع عنه، كأن الكتابة تتحول إلى مرض، أن تصاب بحساسية الكتابة، بمقاومة الكلمات، ان تتوقف كأنك تعالجاً إدماناً من مخدر ما، ولكنك ترغب في إنهاء ذلك بصرامة بالغة وبفكرة لدغت رأسك فجأة لتتحول إلى واقع تحاول أن تعايشه، التخلي عن الكتابة يشبه التخلي عن أصابعك كما يصف هو، أن تلجأ للخيال، للاكتئاب، لمحاولة حياة جديدة، ومن هنا تتولد في ذهن مستر غرين فكرة مجنونة وهي التحول إلى صنع بورتريهات، ولكنك ليس عن طريق الرسم بل بورتريه مكتوب، عن طريق كلمات وصفحات قليلة، تكتب رسم شخص ، يا لها من فكرة خلابة، أن تكتب رسم أحدهم ، فكرة حميمية أكثر من اللازم ، وأكثر من ذلك فأنك تصل إلى الشخص، تحوله إلى قصة مكتوبة، إلى ذكرى من ورق لا تشبه أي تجربة أخرى ..
رغم جمالية الفكرة ولكن للأمانة لم أنسجم مع الرواية بشكل كافٍ، أردتها أعمق من ذلك ، أكثر كثافة، كنت أطمع بشيء أكثر، تذكرت فجأة رواية دوريان جراي، ولا أعلم لماذا تذكرته، ربما ظلمت الرواية، ربما أعطيتها أقل من مساحتها في وجداني، ولكني ما زلت أتساءل ، عما كان يمكن للرواية أن تكون أجمل من هذا .. هذا ما أفكر فيه بشكل جاد ..

Любимата ми книга на Барико дотук (заедно с "Емаус").
Едно не ми е ясно само - защо анотацията на задната корица на българскто издание толкова нелепо преразказва целия роман. Искрено щастлива съм, че в момента, в който видях толкова наблъскан текст отзад, веднага реших, че няма да прочета и една дума от него. Прочетох книгата, прочетох анотацията и се потупах по рамото с благодарност. Ако имате интерес към книгата, моля, спестете си четенето на сбития синопсис.

لعبة روائية. تبدأ بإثارة، ثم تبدو مملة في المنتصف، لكن الكاتب الحاذق يعود لاستلام الدفّة ويقودنا إلى مفاجأة روائية مثيرة.
روائي يعلن توقفه عن الكتابة. ويعيش بؤس العيش بلا كتابة. ثم تستهويه فكرة رسم شخصيات بالكلمات، فيلجأ إلى تجربة غريبة.

Bij Baricco heb ik altijd moeite om mijn positie te bepalen: hebben we te doen met echte diepzinnigheid en doorleefde poëzie of worden we bij de neus genomen in een wolk van new age edelkitsch? In Mr Gwyn geef ik Baricco het voordeel van de twijfel. Het toeval wil dat de kern van deze vertelling draait rond een vraagstuk dat me de laatste tijd erg heeft bezig gehouden: hoe portretteer je iemand? Dat is sowieso een netelige uitdaging. Daarbij komt dat de commercie menselijke lichamen en gezichten heeft geassimileerd als syntactische basiselementen van haar visuele lingua franca. Als je de ongerijmdheid en kwetsbaarheid van het individuele menselijk bestaan wil vatten dan is het erg lastig geworden om de mercantiele vernis te penetreren die is doorgedrongen tot in de fijnste poriën van onze verbeelding. Baricco heeft dit vraagstuk getransponeerd naar de wereld van de literator, naar het medium van het woord. Zijn portrettist is een romanschrijver die is uitgekeken op het literaire bedrijf en zijn creatieve impulsen voortaan ten dienste stelt van een eigenzinnige en ascetische portretkunst. Hij creëert een intrigerende setting in ruimte en tijd waarbinnen een echte ontmoeting tot stand kan (moét) komen tussen portrettist en zijn subject. De wijze waarop dit experiment gestalte krijgt in de symbiose tussen de portrettist en zijn eerste, zorgvuldig uitgekozen medewerkster is het poëtische hart van dit verhaal. Even intrigerend is de kroniek van de confrontatie tussen Gwyn en een emotioneel fragiele zitter die riposteert met een rücksichtslose vernietigingsdrang. De finale van het boek is evenwel op het randje. De zin voor understatement verlaat Baricco daar even. Maar in de laatste bladzijden treft de auteur dan weer een gepaste, elegische toon die het boek - morendo - laat eindigen.

Lasciate ogni speranza di leggere un libro normale,perché questo non lo é,anche se a primo acchitto può sembrarlo.
Qualcuno ha detto "Finalmente Baricco ha scelto una trama,ha dato una colonna portante alla sua poesia!" Ciò è vero e non vero.Se apparentemente la storia ha un prologo ed un epilogo,la realtà dei fatti é ben diversa. Certo,se Mr Gwyn viene letto col cervello é questa l'impressione,ma per apprezzarlo davvero bisogna andare oltre. La coprotagonista alla fine del libro ripercorre l'intenso mistero che mr.Gwyn si è lasciato dietro,ma non ne trae nessuna conclusione. La verità é che una trama c'è,ma è sospesa,senza fine,ripercorribile e in un certo senso interattiva.
Ecco perché in questo libro io ci ho visto un Baricco "maturato",più completo. Quei deliri poetici che mi hanno fatto amare il suo stile sono diventati trama,storia,struttura delineata. E questo niente toglie alla sua immensa bravura.Semplicemente é meno disordinato.Non mancano,infatti,squarci lirici di pura poesia. I personaggi sono intensi e unici,come sempre nei suoi romanzi.La scena del vecchio in lacrime é semplicemente impagabile,e non ha bisogno di strane architetture stilistiche per restare in piedi.E' netta,precisa,perfetta.
E' per questo che non gli ho negato le cinque stelle. Perché mi ha emozionata,senza sconvolgermi i pensieri e sparpagliarli in decine di trame e personaggi diversi.
Perché se Turner avesse dipinto Madonne piuttosto che tempeste di neve,sarebbero stati capolavori ugualmente. Qualcuno dirà "Non é più lui." Beh,che guardino meglio .

Χαίρομαι πραγματικά που αυτή η αναγνωστική χρονιά βαίνει στο τέλος της με αυτό το βιβλίο.
Είναι το πρώτο του Baricco που διαβάζω, αλλά σίγουρα όχι το τελευταίο. Δεν γνωρίζω την ελληνική μετάφραση, διαβάζοντάς το όμως στα Ιταλικά θεωρώ ότι δεν έχασα ούτε στάλα από την μαγευτική του ατμόσφαιρα.
Μιά ιδιοφυής ιστορία, τόσο αριστοτεχνικά δοσμένη για το ταξίδι προς την αυτογνωσία, τον έρωτα, την φιλία, τις αγωνίες του συγγραφέα αλλά και κάθε ανθρώπου.
Ένα βιβλίο που με ταξίδεψε, με μάγεψε, με συνεπήρε...
Η απόλυτη αναγνωστική εμπειρία...

Un libro breve pero bien escrito, de la búsqueda del escritor por seguir con su pasión literaria sin ser golpeado por la fama. Me falta un poco mas de historia pero fue disfrutable.
