Closer is a stand alone novella that is based in the same world of the Mageri series, but is not part of the Mageri series.

Even if Closer is set in the Mageri universe, which I know and love, it took me a while to invest with the story, since most of it happened over the span of just a few hours, and Kane and Caroline were the only characters.
Closer is a strange little story, where most of the action happens inside of Caroline's head, while she is unconscious. She's not hallucinating, either, what happens is actually as reals as can be. Kane was on his way home, just needing the paper before he brought his beers home, when a stranger brushed by him and made him lose his last quarter. As a sensor, Kane could feel the man's emotions, and also feel some of his memories. What he saw and felt made his blood freeze, that man was a serial killer! Even if one of the worst things breed can do in the Mageri world is killing a human, that is exactly what Kane does. He will not let a serial killer continue his bad work.
In order to not be caught and put in breed jail for the next 100 years, Kane swiftly lifted the dead man's wallet and car keys, then drove to his house. Only when he arrived there did he realize that there was someone in the trunk - and that was the unconscious Caroline. After putting her on a bed, he touched her, and somehow entered her sub conscience, and she was not happy to see him. For the next several hours, they hang out in Caroline's head, getting to know each other, falling in love and all that. What I had some trouble with was when they started saying things like 'It's always been you'... for all of the four hours they knew each other? I'm all for suspending disbelief, and I can even get the paranormals who fall in love more or less instantly. But saying things like always - and meaning in the past up until now - that threw me.
I would have enjoyed this more if less time was spent inside of Caroline's head, because then getting to know them would have felt quite a bit more realistic. The story is well told, though, and of course, Poole narrated it to perfection! If you're a Mageri fan, you will probably enjoy this short tripinto that universe.
Kane wondered if any man in her life had really noticed how beautiful she was.
Kane is a sensitive. Every touch gives him the feelings and emotions of those around him. Never trained to control these emotions, he has isolated himself from physical touch.
He accidently has contact with a man on the street and immediately feels his evil intent (this man has murdered and enjoyed killing women). Deciding to take matters into his own hands, Kane kills this man. Now he takes the man's car in attempt to hide his actions...little did he know that in the trunk was his next victim.
Closer was amazing Novella. Most of the story is during a mental link with another character in the story. I can not give anymore away but at around 80% in I hit the AW, crap this book is going to make me cry. With tears running down my face I ended this story, and if a novella length story can bring that kind of emotion out of me its getting 5 HUGE STARS!
Closer is what I would call a sister book to the Mageri series. It is a stand alone book or rather novella, but, I am glad I read the Mageri series first because it helped me to understand the Breed world. In this book we have Kane and Caroline, both of whom are sensors. Kane is extra sensitive, though, so the emotions he picks up are magnified. As a result, he has cut himself off from touching others. He wears gloves to protect himself. Caroline is the opposite. She can't transfer. She can receive but not transfer emotions through touch. At about halfway through the book I finally realized that Kane has a connection to a character in the Mageri series but you'll have to read it to find out what it is.
All Kane wanted that night was to get some dinner. Little did he know how this one night would change his life. He encounters a human man but when they touch, Kane realizes this man is the worst kind of evil. He is a serial murderer of women. But, through this encounter, he meets Caroline. Can he save Caroline's life or is it Caroline that will save his life?
This was a very sweet story and it added another dimension to the Breed world. I would love to see Kane show up in future books of the Mageri series.
So I saw the author of this book post the book on ŷ.com one night, I read the synopsis and something was tugging me to give the book a try even though I had other books I should have been reading. I have not read anything else by Dannika Dark and later learned that this book is set in the same world as a series she writes. I am so glad I gave this book a try!
It is a fairly short book as it is a novella, but it packs quite an emotional punch for not being a full length. I have a rule, that you may know about if you follow this blog. If you cry, you get a five and let me tell you, I was balling! I was a blubbering fool during part of this book.
It took me a little bit to get a feel for this new world that I was in, if I had read the series, I probably would have known more but as it is I didn’t so I had a new world to learn about. I picked it pretty quickly so you don’t really have to read the series to grasp the world in this book.
Kane was raised as a human and his Sensor abilities are off the charts sensitive, so he has a really hard time dealing in the real world. He can’t touch anyone and it’s hard for him to be in public, because he picks up all sorts of things that he doesn’t want to know. He is basically all alone in the world with only a human sister he can’t see because he’s not aging and because of his abilities. His abilities also make it really hard for him to keep a job and make a connection. He is struggling with his loneliness when his fate changes forever. He passes a human male and once again he sees something he wishes he never had to see and he can’t keep himself from reacting and than he does the forbidden and ends up on the run. Kane has never done anything like this before and makes mistake after mistake which leads him to Caroline, but by the time he finds her he may be too late.
Caroline is also a Sensor, but she has the opposite problem as Kane, she is defective. She can receive emotions but she can’t project them. This makes her defective and she remains on the fringes of their society much like Kane. She also lives a fairly lonely existence, since her father disappeared. When Kane first touches Caroline, he is pulled into her mind. For that she soundly pummels him for entering her scared space, go Caroline! Once she figures out that he’s not doing it on purpose (and we never really find out how he can do this, which remains unresolved) she settles down. Most of this book ends up taking place in Caroline’s mind which ends up creating an extremely intimate setting, because of this these two get closer to each other than they ever would have been able to otherwise. Caroline is a fantastic character, she is feisty and holds her own. I loved that she gave Kane as much ish as she did, but she is also venerable and sweet. Her circumstances are incredibly dire, but she tries to maintain hope in a desperate situation. In the end, her hope may not be enough and it will be too late
Overall I really loved this book, it is emotional and meaningful. Two people find themselves in an unlikely situation and have to make the best of it. The characters are very likeable and the story intriguing. I did have an issue with a couple of unresolved issues and would have liked an epilogue with a one year later, I felt we could have used that closure, but I guess Ms. Dark is also leaving it open for a possibility for a sequel. I have no idea If that is even in her thoughts, but I’m throwing it out there. Also, we went on a few unnecessary tangents, with as short as the book is, I think these could have been left out. Other than that, fantastic read! I will more than likely at some point go back and read her series because I enjoyed this one so much! Great job!
4 "I Sense You" Stars for the story and 4.5 Stars for the narration!
Having fallen in love with the Seven Series, both from a writing and a narration point of view, I was delighted to hear that the dynamic duo who wrote and narrated that series (Dannika Dark and Nicole Poole) were releasing an audio version of a standalone novella from Dannika Dark's previous Mageri series. Needless to say I enjoyed the fabulous narration and was intrigued by the intricate world that Dannika Dark gives us a peek into in Closer.
In Closer we get a glimpse at a secret society of immortals that include "sensors," like the hero of this romance, Kane. Sensors can feel the emotional energy of the people they touch, basically experiencing and capturing others emotions. Kane, however, is hypersensitive and instead of this transference of emotional energy being a positive experience, it actually leads to pain, causing him to have to wear gloves before touching anyone. As you can imagine, this disability leads to Kane living a pretty lonely life.
Until he comes across Caroline, a sensor who has a different type of disability, and whose life hangs in the balance. When they meet in this tenuous situation, Kane is forced to make a decision between taking the safe path or exploring the unusual chemistry between them, even if in saving Caroline from imminent danger, he may cause his own demise.
As in the Seven Series, Dannika Dark knows how to write romantic suspense into her PNR/UF stories. The immediacy of Kane's and Caroline's situation, and forced contemplative nature of their interactions, leads to a highly intense connection. Moreover, though I haven't read the Mageri Series, this glimpse into the intricate PNR/UF world that forms a backdrop for this series has certainly piqued my curiosity. I can't wait to explore more of this series!

Felt like all I was reading was words for the most part of the story. Seemed to take a long time to get into and then it didn't really go anywhere much for me. I did not connect with the characters at all.
If you read the Mageri series then you already know Kane is Sunny’s brother. The jail scene in the last book has always been on my mind. Why Kane? Why the girl. Even the first time I read the books it was always a question I wanted to know.
Well if I had known Closer was going to give me those answers I would have picked it up a heck of a lot faster than I did.
Kane a Sensor, who knew, I won’t give you details it’s a short story so pick it up. But I hope to see a reunion with Sunny and the twins and Uncle Kane. This novella really ties in that whole jail scene and why it was or had to be Kane.
Can we just lock Dannika in a room so she can give us more of these amazing characters? Is that asking too much? lol Yeah I know it is but damn this just makes me want to have more, more, more.
Again great narration! Can’t say enough good things about Nicole Poole’s performance.
Kane is an unusually sensitive Sensor, someone who experiences emotional energy through touch and touch brings him pain, forcing him to live as a recluse.
When he felt the evil radiating off a man one night, he acts on his instincts to stop this menace permanently! Faced with what he has done, he flees, in the man's vehicle, not knowing that another victim was stuffed in the truck!
He senses the thoughts and terror of this woman, Caroline, feels her pain, so much like his own.
The ending is amazingly real, the story emotional, the characters so in need of happiness!
Closer is a novella in the Mageri universe, of which I'm certainly a fan. Unlike the Mageri novels, this novel stars not Mages, but Sensors, a different kind of Breed. Sensors are basically empaths that sense and transfer emotions through their hands. Except for our stars, Kane and Caroline, who are both slightly impaired as Sensors.
On the whole, I like Mages better. Something about them resonates more for me. Which said, this was a great read. It's more of a straight up love story, where the other Mageri stories are (in addition to being romances), more complex tales.
I can't say this novella is simple, though. Just when you start thinking you know where it's going, it kind of pulls a 180. I'd love to explain that, but it would take spoilers. What I can say is, Dark has a compelling voice and style that almost instantly has me invested in whatever story she's telling, including this one. So I recommend this to her fans, not as an intro to the Breed universe (though it could be that), but as an expansion to it.
I totally want more. Kane is actually . Kane is a Sensor who's never been taught to be a sensor. So he is super sensitive to touch. When he accidentally brushed up with a serial killer who has a girl in his trunk.
Carrie is a strong female character but I thought it interesting that perhaps Sensors have a mating pull too. Not 100% sure though since we don't get deep personal with sensors except in this book.
I think Kane is a wonderful guy and I hate that the world shit on him.
I'm wondering though about her dad. It seems loose and not really explained. Maybe it's in the background but it kept me wondering.
Still I enjoyed the book!
Don't forget to check the last page of ALL of Dannika Dark's books because she always has a photo at the back!
Normally I don't seek out Novella's. I love series because I love to see so much change and growth in the story and characters. However, I love Dannika's work so I could not pass this by.
This book was touching and sweet; just a beautiful love story. It wasn't cheesy, not overly heroic but just about perfect for what anyone would expect from a novella.
Sorry this isn't much of a review but I defiantly give it 5 stars!
I. Want. More. I laughed, I cried...I felt. These characters jumped off the page from word one and I couldn't stop until i was finished. I don't normally invest in novella's but I'm so in love with this series, this world, that I couldn't resist. So glad I did.
A quickie introducing Summers adoptive brother Kane, Im wondering what role he will play in the grand scheme of things... this is a bit of a quick heartwrenching story... A little like the film just like heaven
And i really could picture Kane a young Mark Ruffalo easily .....
YUM - ME
any way i really hope to see these two again at some point and hope they get their happy ending
This is a spinn of of the main story and a short story. It follows a different couple: Kane and Caroline. Kane is a sensor and he kills a man who bumped into him so he lost the little money he owned. But he sees the past of this guy who is a serial killer and rapist. Now he has to flee. He steals the guys car so he can flee. He bring it back to the owners home. But by doing so he finds Caroline his latest victim. But she is injured and he stays with her to save her life...
Kane is a Sensor. A very sensitive one - his gift causes him pain. Other Sensors can sell "feelings" of one person to another. Kane can't. He prefers a solitary life. To have sex he has to wear thick gloves, not many women appreciate this and he can't explain himself. Kane is in his 30's but looks much younger. Coming home from the store an older man bumps into Kane and then acts like it's Kane's fault. Kane drops his groceries and goes after the man. Without his gloves on he learns the human is a serial killer of young women. He is so enraged that he kills the man. For an Immortal to kill a human is a death sentence. Kane finds the man's wallet and car keys. He decides the best place for him to decide what to do is at the man's house. He parks in the man's garage, as he moves around the back end he touches the trunk. He senses the woman in the trunk and she is still alive, but barely. He lifts her out and put her down on a bed in the house. He carefully cleans her face and head where she has a deep wound. She is unconscious. Not knowing if he should sew her wound or glue it. He searches and finds super glue. He uses it to close the wound. When he holds her hand, bare hand to bare hand he ends up in her mind and she flattens him with a frying pan. He lets go because of the pain. Not believing he can see and interact with her in another plane, he takes her hand again and she knees him in the groin. Stupidly he returns again and demands she stops hurting him, she is in a coma and he is only trying to get info to help her. She says she has no family. When she looks around she is in her grandma's kitchen the only place she was really ever happy. When he suggests a couch might be comfortable, she thinks it and one appears. Slowly they learn about one another. He keeps trying to get her to wake up as he goes back and forth between planes. Outside the only window in her mind is getting darker and she is getting colder. She intuitively knows that when it goes full dark she will die. He learns she is also a Sensor, but a null. She doesn't work right. He shares that he was raised by humans and she tells him that is why he cannot control his gift. If Sensors had raised him they would have taught him. When she dies in his arms he is devastated. To find his perfect mate - another Sensor who doesn't send him into overload, how could life be so cruel. When he returns to her body, he is not surprised that a Chitah (tracker) and the Breed police have traced him. He tries to tell them the truth, but they don't seem to listen. He is put in Breed prison. He is simply existing waiting to hear the date of his execution. A surprise witness saves him from execution. He still has to serve time for the death of the human, but it has been confirmed that the human deserved to die for his crimes. But he has a friend who promises to visit and wait for him. He has something to look forward to. I am a big fan of Dannika Dark. If you like paranormal, you must read her series. This book takes place in the world of Breeds that she has built. I find her writing addictive. I think you will to!
As a fan of Ms Darks I just HAD to have Closer as soon as it came out, and I don't regret buying it one little bit.
Danika continues with her Mageri world here, so if you are a first time reader, I would thoroughly recommend you begin with Book One in The Mageri series first - buy this by all means, but read Closer after the other series to get the full enjoyment from this one.
I love this world, almost as much as I love Anne McCaffreys Pern! The blending Ms Dark has done of Breeds into our own society makes it all seem so real and possible. I adore that.
Okay, this is where we get to the nitty-gritty part, and the only thing I didn't like about this book; and that is that this story was a novella. Oh I knew that going into it - but like I said, I am a fan of Ms Darks and her Mageri world, so novella or not, I had to have it! However, I digress and I've already told you this. What I hadn't counted on, was falling so deeply into the young couple and their story that I now want more! More of both of them, and as I know that there is a connection... Okay, no spoilers, but I do so hope that I will be hearing more of these two down the track. I just know Silver will adore them both!
Hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!
PS, can I just say a big thank you to Western Power, who having lost the ability to provide me with power for the afternoon left me heaps of peace and quiet, so I had no interruptions and nothing much else to do but enjoy this story. What a shame ae? Lol.
Dannika Dark is an author that you never have to wonder if you will get your monies worth. The quality of her writing and imagination is far beyond her affordable pricing!
I consider myself somewhat of a Mageri... how should I put this? FREAK! Yes, that sums it up. In her Mageri series you have a certain cast of characters you grow to (or instantly) love, and I was afraid I would miss them in this novella. I was happily proven wrong, as Kane and Caroline were a force all their own. A subtle but firm force.
Closer is proof that a book does not need copious amounts of sex or anxiety fueled action, to be worth a read. There is action and a smattering of sexual energy without being a knock you upside the head kind of story. We have all read the instant attraction thing before, and I am glad this was not plagued with the usual silly dialogue that often accompanies those stories. As usual Dannika has taken something of a popular subject and made it uniquely her own! You wont read this and be thinking, "hmm, have I read this before?".
I cant end this without mentioning the little visual gift she always leaves for us at the end of her books. Again, so uniquely Dannika Dark!
I really enjoyed this story. It was about Kane, who is a Sensor, which is someone that senses feelings from touch. He sees sort of visions from people and objects he touches. One night he is bumped into by a man in a hurry, and he gets a vision of how evil he is and all these girls he has killed. Since he had no proof, he decided to make the world a better place by offing him:) While he is trying to decide what to do now, he discovers the guys last victim is still in the trunk of his car, and still alive. And is Breed like him.... So trying to help he is sucked into her unconscious mind. And they can communicate in her mind. And that is how most of the story goes, them getting to know each other in her mind, and him trying to figure out how to save her, since their kind can't go to regular hospitals for risk of discovery.
I don't want to give away the story, but it was bittersweet and sad for a long time. But I got my happy moment in the end. This is kind of a spin off to Dannika Dark's Mageri series, and I really enjoyed it. Easy to read, and I can't wait for more from her.
Well that was an interesting mix of dark and cute. Caroline and Kane are adorable. Caroline has a good swing and it was really cool how strong her connection was to Kane to the point that what happened in her mind appeared in the physical world. It was also pretty dark how she was abducted by a serial killer and Kane just happened to notice the human and decided to kill him. This book doesn't seem to be related to Silver's story at all but it was a nice stand alone novella.
Too short. Way too short. I want to see more of Kane and Caroline. I want to see him see Sunny. I also want to know more about this Chitah bc I have a strong feeling I know him. yes, so much I need more of.
Kane is a very sensitive Sensor, while Caroline (aka Carrie) is a defective Sensor that can only feel other's emotions but others can't feel anything from her. So in the case of Kane it's perfect because he hasn't been able to touch anyone for a long time because he gets sensory overload. In a twist of fate they meet after a serial killer's attack that leaves Caroline clinging to life....
This is side story and is connected to the to Sunny from the original story line.
Kane is a sensor and his gift is extremely sensitive to when he touches someone. So one evening on his walk home, when he accidently touches a man he sees that he is a serial killer. On an instinct, Kane actually decided to kill him because of the vile things he sees and to save future women. What Kane wasn't expecting was the woman in the trunk of this humans car.
Kane has no idea what to do and since he is already going to get into trouble for killing a human, he doesn't know what to do with Caroline. So he goes into her mind and they end up fighting then bounding. But Caroline isn't healing due to the crowbar to her head. Once Kane sees that he needs to get her help is too late.
The story doesn't end how you expect. I'm hoping that Kane and Sunny get together again so that he comes into the rest of the Mageri storyline.
My heart hit my stomach a few times in this one. I was on tender hooks if there was going to be a HEA. Unique circumstance and loved the characters. I hope we see Kane and Caroline again and get a peek again into their lives perhaps in one of the crossover series.
We will have to see how this plays into the overall story arc. It is the story of Sunny's brother Kane. He is a sensor. Closer is his love story with Caroline.
After reading The Gift, I felt like I was missing the stories of two couples. One of those was Kane and Caroline.
Closer brings us the story of Kane and Caroline. Kane is a Sensor who has never really had the opportunity to learn about his Breed or even how to control his own gifts. He's a bit of a loner. Then he stumbles across a man that Kane picks up is a murderer. Kane does what he believes he needs to do, despite it being against the law to hurt a human.
Then he meets Caroline. Caroline is a spunky, fun character. But the thing here is, the whole story of these two takes place inside her head. All of the revelations about each other and even their own gifts is all within her head. I kept expecting things to happen that would take the relationship beyond that. Instead, it just got sadder and sadder.
Despite getting to know these two characters inside and out throughout the whole book, I did not feel the connection with them that I would have needed to to make me cry. So even though in some circumstances I could see this being a tear jerker, I didn't shed any. Boy, did that sound callous! I felt bad for the characters, but I didn't cry. That sounded a bit better!
This is a cute, emotional novella that will give you a peek inside the Mageri world and some of the side characters. In fact, I think this may actually happen before the first book of the Mageri series. It's hard to say, but the timing seems that way to me. Anyway, if you are a fan of this series, you won't want to miss out on this little side story. It's always great to come back to a beloved world!
I am a huge Dannika dark fan and love the world she has created, so when I saw this novella, I knew I had to read it. Of the many things I love about this story, one of the things I love the most is that it is a story in and of itself and you do not need to have reads her Impulse series to enjoy it. Why do I love that? Because it gives people an opportunity to dive into her world without the feeling that they are committing to a series. Mind you, you will probably want to read the series after reading this novella. There is some slight overlap in that one of the characters has a sibling in the Mageri series, but that will not cause any confusion when reading this story.
I do not know how to say what I want to say without giving too much away, so pardon my vagueness with this next bit. I think the way they initially communicate and get to know each other is what makes the story as powerful as it it. The situation is all kinds of messed up and yet these two people find each other and the possibility of happiness. Something each had given up on in the past.
The ending is brilliant. Not because it solves some big mystery, but because it is more realistic than I was afraid it would be and it leaves many doors open for the characters while at the same time being a very satisfying ending. I will admit that I hope we see these characters entering into the Impulse universe, but if they do not, I feel like I know enough.
This is not a YA read. It is for the 18 plus crowd. It is not graphic, but the content, especially how they meet, is not for younger readers. If you love this novella, please give her Mageri series a go. You will not be disappointed.
