Ukrainian birth, heritage, and upbringing of Gogol influenced many of his written works among the most beloved in the tradition of Russian-language literature. Most critics see Gogol as the first Russian realist. His biting satire, comic realism, and descriptions of Russian provincials and petty bureaucrats influenced later Russian masters Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Turgenev, and especially Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Gogol wittily said many later Russian maxims.

All three tales are written in that unique mysterious style which only Nikolai Gogol could use.
For madman the world is what is in his head鈥� And Nikolai Gogol puts into the head of his lunatic a plenitude of ridiculous things turning his mind into potpourri of ludicrous abracadabra鈥�
And Nikolai Gogol literally turns all the pharisaic ambitions and fears into the madman鈥檚 grotesque musings鈥�
The Nevski Prospect is a rather sinister and ironic tale of some amorous adventures.
The Portrait is a bizarre, flowery and enigmatic Gothic story鈥�
Art can elevate one鈥檚 soul higher and art can drive one mad.
For madman the world is what is in his head鈥� And Nikolai Gogol puts into the head of his lunatic a plenitude of ridiculous things turning his mind into potpourri of ludicrous abracadabra鈥�
To-day is a day of the greatest rejoicing. Spain has a King. He has been discovered. I am that King. It was only to-day I found it out. The revelation came to me like a flash of lightning.
And Nikolai Gogol literally turns all the pharisaic ambitions and fears into the madman鈥檚 grotesque musings鈥�
But men are unfair, with this way of reckoning in weeks. The Jews invented it because it鈥檚 their Rabbi鈥檚 washing time鈥� And all those fathers, holders of office, all that set of theirs who fawn on everyone and push their way to court, and call themselves patriots and what not, 鈥� it鈥檚 bonuses, bonuses, all these patriots want! They鈥檇 sell their father and mother and God for money, 鈥� ambitious snobs, Judases! All this is caused by ambition, and ambition is caused by a little vessel situated under the tongue, and in the vessel there is a small worm no bigger than a pin鈥檚 head, and all this is made by a barber who lives in Gorokhovaya Street. Damaged and dusty though the portrait was, when he managed to clean the dust off the face, he could see the marks of a lofty artist鈥檚 work. The portrait, it seemed, was unfinished; but the force of the brush was striking. Most extraordinary of all were the eyes: in them the artist seemed to have employed all the force of his brush and all his painstaking effort. They simply stared, stared even out of the portrait itself, as if destroying its harmony by their strange aliveness. When he brought the portrait to the door, the eyes stared still more strongly.

One fine morning in Saint Petersburg, Major Kovalyov, a womaniser upstart, looks in the mirror and discovers that his nose is gone. That same morning, the barber Ivan Yakovlevich slices a roll of onion bread only to find out there is a nose tucked inside the crumb. This is the grotesque premise of The Nose. The rest of the story goes on from one madcap event to the next.
In another part of town, the shabby Titular Counsellor Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin (aka Mr Caca on the babouche) realises that winter is coming, and his old overcoat is in tatters. So, he pays a visit to the one-eyed tailor Petrovitch, the proud owner of a crooked toenail and a punctured snuffbox, to get his rags patched up. The rest of The Overcoat is as absurd as brutal for poor Akaky.
In another part of town, young Titular Counsellor Aksenty Ivanov Propishchin writes in his diary (October 3rd) about his professional setbacks and the slightly odd things happening around him. But fortunately, Propishchin will soon (on April 43rd, 2000) become King of Spain. The rest of the Diary of a Madman is nothing short of hysterical.
Meanwhile, outside of town, Pythagoras Chertokutsky is boasting about a magnificent coach he doesn鈥檛 own and invites the whole cavalry regiment to visit him the next day and see it with their own eyes. He then proceeds to get utterly plastered, and the rest of The Carriage will prove an unpleasant experience to old hangovered Chertokutsky.
On it goes. Gogol鈥檚 Petersburg stories show how coarse and cruel the social gear train of Tsarist Russia could be: every little clerk working their way through a byzantine organisation of ranks, titles, bootlicking, office bullying, and trying to climb an endless hierarchical ladder, meanwhile living in constant poverty and self-sacrifices. Gossip, careerism, envy, lust and all sorts of fervid obsessions are widespread. Impotence, frustration and failure are even more pervasive. So much so that the protagonists of these stories, often powerless and socially awkward little schlemiels, end up becoming wholly delusional and paranoiac (at best).
All this business would feel quite sweltering if it were not for the incredibly ironic, funny, sometimes metafictional tone of voice of Gogol鈥檚 narrators. There is indeed a Quixotic or Chaplinesque quality to these modern fables, mixing up comedy and tragedy, realism and surrealism, that makes them sound at the same time nightmarish, bizarre, hilarious and deeply humane. But what is more impressive is how these short satires of early 19th-century governmental bureaucracy influenced countless authors, from to , , , and . Furthermore, they still ring true in our age of corporate politics and 24/7 social media beauty pageants and penis contests.

If you are a reader of taste and discernment, a reader who values their time, you could do worse than pick up this little volume of tales by Nikolai Gogol. How many books of a merely 231 pages can offer you four masterpieces (three short stories, one novella) and one delightful, expertly crafted short story that might convince you it was a masterpiece too if you had discovered it almost anywhere except in this august company?
From the first, Gogol was an outsider. Ukrainian-born but descended from Cossacks; a gentleman but of the lesser gentry; fiercely ambitious, but moody and solitary, his schoolmates called him 鈥渙ur mysterious dwarf.鈥� His early work was a series of Ukrainian stories, but his mother had to help him research the details, for he had only a little knowledge of his own history. His later tales are set in St. Petersburg, the governmental capital of Russia, from whose closely regulated social hierarchy he felt alienated, and which he held in great contempt. Still an outsider, he was a Ukrainian in a Russian world. Fortunately, though, St. Petersburg recognized great work when they saw it: Pushkin admired him, his play The Government Inspector was a success, and Gogol was welcomed into the literary world.
The tale of Gogol鈥檚 life grows darker from then on, but all the works in this small volume are taken from this early period. Taras Bulba is a romantic epic in miniature, an account of the Cossack people at war with the Poles, filled with savagery and heroism. The other masterpieces here are all taken from his 鈥淪t. Petersburg Tales,鈥� ironic depictions of petty men obsessed with their position in a bureaucratic hierarchy: in the ghostly tale 鈥淭he Overcoat鈥濃€攑erhaps the greatest of the works here鈥攁 bureaucrat seeks (and loses) a new coat to uphold his declining status; in the surrealistic work 鈥淭he Nose,鈥� a bureaucrat鈥檚 own nose abandons him, and goes off to seek social status on its own; and in wildly funny and pathetic 鈥淭he Diary of a Madman,鈥� a bureaucratic clerk obsessively in love with his employer鈥檚 daughter disintegrates into increasingly delusions. (The other tale, the comically anti-climactic 鈥淭he Carriage,鈥� though it is set in a little town where the cavalry is stationed and features a local landowner and former cavalryman, is filled with same concerns for social status as 鈥淭he St. Petersburg Tales.鈥�)
The translation here is a good one, and flows easily. I didn鈥檛 find the afterward by Priscilla Meyer all that helpful. But at least it is mercifully brief.

Whenever I am wallowing in a deep, deep valley of despair and misery 鈥� all due to a very disappointing, recent, DNF - I usually reach for a strong bottle of Gogol (sometimes a Kafka brew), as a palette cleanser, there is no substitute. This usually does the trick.
The Diary of a Madman by Nikolay Gogol did not disappoint. In this short story we witness a low-level clerk, Aksenty Ivanovich Poprishchin, descend into madness. Gogol writes this in the first person as a daily diary. This gave me a real sense intimacy with Poprishchin. Almost like he was chatting in a chair next to me,
As with many Gogol characters, this poor fellow is obsessed with hierarchy and status, he鈥檚 also miserable. His diary shows he is frustrated, and he speaks very disparagingly about his colleagues and the head of department. However, his adoration of the director is nothing short of sycophantic. He is also obsessed with the director鈥檚 daughter, who is about to be married.
The first sign of madness occurs when he overhears two dogs talking to each other on a street, one of these dogs belongs to the director鈥檚 daughter, which becomes important later in the story. These two dogs write letters to each other, no less!
Each entry starts with the date 鈥� for example, October 4th. I was really taken aback and did chuckle when an entry stated the date as April 43rd 2000, these headings continued to indicate further deterioration 鈥� another example is Madrid, 30th Februarius 鈥� now that did make me laugh!!!
鈥滻 was so worried I put my socks and shoes on and hurried into the state council room to instruct the police not to let the earth land on the moon鈥�
Poprishchin, continues to plummet into insanity 鈥� he even thinks he is a Spanish monarch. Even though this was an amusing story, I did fell very sad for this chap 鈥� really, there is nothing funny about this at all. It鈥檚 a credible study of what someone with a severe mental illness may experience. I felt guilty for laughing at him earlier in the piece.
So, if you like absurdity, a bit of humour (guilt or not), random unrelated nonsense, talking dogs (they write too!), romantic tragedy, during an interesting period of history 鈥� you鈥檒l like this.
I have enjoyed other Gogol short stories more 鈥� but this was entertaining, a bit funny, sad, and engaging.

When you look back to the Golden Era of Russian Literature, Nikolai Gogol is like the odd man out. You have the romanticism of Pushkin, the philosophical depth found in Dostoyevsky, complex examinations of Russian society in Tolstoy, the realist style of Turgenev and then you have the satirical and farcical works of Gogol. It鈥檚 funny because Gogol鈥檚 stories fit ever so comfortably amongst the twentieth century Russian literature, where satirical stories were rampant due to Soviet censors.
It鈥檚 ever so comfortable because you don鈥檛 need to consciously place your mind in nineteenth century Russia to read Gogol. Somehow he places it for you, without any extended visual sequences needed. You are just there, in amongst the surrealism, the farce, the political satire, the absurdism, the quirkiness, the sadness, the self-awareness. Gogol effortlessly transports you on a literary odyssey like no other literature from that era. It鈥檚 all these qualities that keeps Gogol鈥檚 stories so fresh, timeless and hilarious. It鈥檚 understandable that without Gogol we would have no Dostoyevsky, Kafka, Bulgakov, Platonov and so many other different writers. Soviet writers of the early twentieth century, especially during Stalin鈥檚 regime, can only thank Gogol for writing socially and politically charged satires and managing to get away with them. Let鈥檚 not forget that there were strict censors even during the nineteenth century, especially during Gogol鈥檚 lifetime.
Diary of a Madman, The Nose and The Overcoat are probably his very best short stories, and all stylistically very different from one another. Utilising the diary format, the protagonist, Poprishchin, in Diary of a Madman challenges governmental bureaucracy and upper society in a hilarious and somewhat sad satire of a delusional man simply wanting to be noticed in the world, echoing the world we live in today. Some of literature鈥檚 funniest lines can be found in Diary of a Madman. The Nose is a complete farce, an almost proto-Kafkaesque and self-aware journey of a man whose nose has mysteriously fallen off his face, and his travels around St Petersburg to find it. The Overcoat completely changes tone into a gloomy, atmospheric tale of perception and troubled consciences, all revolving around an overcoat. Still, Gogol retains his trademark absurdism and structured prose, in an all-round fantastic collection of his short stories. Gogol is simply one of Russia鈥檚 greatest writers.

鈥淚 confess I felt deeply troubled when I considered how unusually delicate and insubstantial the moon is. The moon, as everyone knows, is usually made in Hamburg, and they make a complete hash of it. I鈥檓 surprised that the English don鈥檛 do something about it. The moon is manufactured by a lame cooper, and it鈥檚 obvious the idiot has no idea what it should be made of. The materials he uses are tarred rope and linseed oil. That鈥檚 why there鈥檚 such a terrible stink all over the earth, which makes us stop our noses up. And it also explains why the moon is such a delicate sphere, and why people can鈥檛 live there 鈥� only noses. 鈥淒iary of a Madman,鈥� the least successful of Gogol鈥檚 three greatest short stories, is astonishing for the way it effortlessly accomplishes great changes in tone, shifting from the realistic to the surreal, and back again. Like the two other stories, 鈥淭he Nose鈥� and 鈥淭he Overcoat鈥�, its protagonist is a cog in the bureaucratic wheel, a 鈥渢itular counsellor鈥� of the imperial civil service, who, in spite of his elegant title, is a flunky of low rank, a helpless drudge. This time, however, he is not described from the outside, but presented from the inside: the entire short story is one long, sustained monologue.
Aksenty Ivanovich Poprishchin, the hapless flunky, is hopelessly in love with his boss鈥檚 daughter Sophie, who of course despises him. He thinks he hears two pet dogs conversing about his beloved, and before long this hallucination of his leads, step by step, to full scale madness. Poprishchin eventually comes to believe he is the rightful King of Spain, and his confined to a mental institution.
Gogol handles the first person narrative with skill, absurdist relish, and a dark humor, and he looks into the abyss at the bottom of human identity perhaps more clearly here than in the other two aforementioned stories. If it be inferior to the others, it is only because if its occasionally unconvincing and unsympathetic madness. The hallucination of talking dogs seems like a clich茅 to me, even for the 19th century, and the end of the story strikes me as too callous and glib. I realize though that I am projecting onto Gogol鈥檚 world a distinctively modern view of madness.
Here is an excerpt from our madman鈥檚 diary, describing the day he arrived in 鈥淪pain,鈥� that is, the mental hospital:
Madrid, February 30th. 鈥� So I am in Spain after all! It has happened so quickly that I could hardly take it in. The Spanish deputies came early this morning, and I got with them into the carriage. This unexpected promptness seemed to me strange. We drove so quickly that in half an hour we were at the Spanish frontier. Over all Europe now there are cast-iron roads, and the steamers go very fast. A wonderful country, this Spain!
As we entered the first room, I saw numerous persons with shorn heads. I guessed at once that they must be either grandees or soldiers, at least to judge by their shorn heads.
The Chancellor of the State, who led me by the hand, seemed to me to behave in a very strange way; he pushed me into a little room and said, 鈥淪tay here, and if you call yourself 鈥淜ing Ferdinand鈥� again, I will drive the wish to do so out of you.鈥�
I knew, however, that that was only a test, and I reasserted my conviction; on which the Chancellor gave me two such severe blows with a stick on the back, that I could have cried out with the pain. But I restrained myself, remembering that this was a usual ceremony of old 鈥� time chivalry when one was inducted into a high position, and in Spain the laws of chivalry prevail up to the present day. When I was alone, I determined to study State affairs; I discovered that Spain and China are one and the same country, and it is only through ignorance that people regard them as separate kingdoms.
