The Publisher Says: 鈥淎 brief and majestic debut.鈥� 鈥擬at铆as N茅spolo,听听El Mundo
Tochtli lives in a palace. He loves hats, samurai, guillotines, and dictionaries, and what he wants more than anything right now is a new pet for his private zoo: a pygmy hippopotamus from Liberia. But Tochtli is a child whose father is a drug baron on the verge of taking over a powerful cartel, and Tochtli is growing up in a luxury hideout that he shares with hit men, prostitutes, dealers, servants, and the odd corrupt politician or two. Long-listed for The Guardian First Book Award, Down the Rabbit Hole, a masterful and darkly comic first novel, is the chronicle of a delirious journey to grant a child鈥檚 wish.
My Review: First, I must get this off my chest: THIS IS NOT A NOVEL. At ~35,000 words, it could be called a novella, a work of 15,000 to 40,000 words (definitions vary on this point, but ALL definitions include 30,000-40,000 words in them and this is that length) that features fewer conflicts than a full novel and more complex ones than a short story. I don't think it's a novella because it's a first-person story and features only one fully developed character, Tochtli (鈥淩abbit鈥� in Nahuatl, relax we'll get there). It's a r茅cit , a form of narrative that has a simple through line, is told from one PoV and quite often in first-person present and past, and offers little in the way of contextualization, of 鈥渨orld-building,鈥� as it's all in the narrator's PoV. I hate the publisher and the trade folk yip-yapping NOVELNOVELNOVEL about a 70-page (generous margins, several blank pages in the text) so as to get over the reading public's aversion to 鈥渓esser鈥� forms. How about we review the piece as it is, and urge the reading public to read it without misleading them? Someone buying a novel expects that it will do what novels do, really explore one or two conflicts with results and resultant changes in characters' lives. Not happenin' here.

Terrific story, this one of a drug king's kid and the many oddities paranoia and isolation have allowed to blossom in him. The names, all taken from Mexico's major native tongue of Nahuatl (the Aztecs spoke it), are all of animals...the narrator's name means Rabbit, his father's name means Rattlesnake, his tutor's name means Deer, and on. They're all like gang nicknames, playing on the culture of nicknames that describe some major thing about a person. Rattlesnake? How can you not perceive a drug lord as a cold-blooded, dangerous, venomous critter? Rabbit? Scared, small, needs to be hidden away鈥攕uits our narrator's life to a T.
Translator Rosalind Harvey has done a marvelous, if British, job of rendering a precocious kid's usages and crotchets into spottily adult language. I haven't read the original Spanish, so I don't know how faithfully she's reproduced Villalobos's original, but I suspect quite well. The language has that certain 鈥渇eel鈥� that good translations do, a kind of smoothness and polished gleam that speak of quality made from quality. That Tochtli is an odd kid is to be expected, that he uses (frequently!) words he's just learning is to be expected, and since those words...sordid, pathetic, devastating...are a little above his actual grasp, the author's use of them in the kid's mouth makes several very trenchant points.
It's all part of building the reader's awareness of the twisted, strange, uncomfortably exaggerated natural parental protection of our kids. Other details include Tochtli's always painful stomach cramps that the doctor can't find a cause for, Tochtli's obsessive passions for things like being a Japanese samurai who's mute and therefore enigmatic (!), his endless list-making. The kid would've been strange no matter what, but Yolcaut (Nahuatl has no dipthongs, so say each letter as if it were a Spanish vowel or a Basque consonant) being what and who he is has made the problems giant-sized.
It's a disquieting little thing, and it's quite darkly amusing, and it's鈥擯raise the Muses!鈥攊t's original. It's balm for a weary-of-~meh~ reader's soul. You'll love it, or you'll hate it, but you won't walk away wondering what it was that you just read.

Yolcaut (Rattlesnake) watched the news with me and when it was over he said some enigmatic things to me, First he said:(p21, American softcover edition)
鈥淎h, they suicided her.鈥�
And then, when he'd stopped laughing:
鈥淭hink the worst and you'll be right.鈥�
Sometimes Yolcaut speaks in enigmatic and mysterious sentences. When he does that it's pointless to ask him what he means, because he never tells me. He wants me to solve the enigma.
Before I went to sleep I looked up the word prestige in the dictionary. I learned that prestige is about people having a good idea about you, and thinking you're the best. In that case you have prestige. Pathetic.

I'm not sure how to describe why I like this. I just know that in this novella, Villalobos manages to have a child narrator tell me something twisted, disturbing, very strange, yet also humorous. No subtleties abound within the crudity of this story--except for the taint provided by the child's view. It seems fitting that a child tells it. The story moves in jolts, relying on the normalcy of the everyday realities of a young boy, until you realize that there is nothing normal about Tochtli's life.

At first you're tricked into thinking that Tochtil is just a young boy who wants a pet. Seems like a fairly simple story. Until you see what is going on with the plot, the intricacies revealed in the storyline, the "voice" of this young boy that just will not let up until you listen to what he has to say. He is not your average boy, he is the son of a drug cartel boss referred to as "king." So when Tochtil asks to leave Mexico and travel across the globe to Liberia, just to get a Liberian pygmy hippopotamus, he gets his wish.
Mexico and Liberia. Two countries you don't see as often in literary settings--parallelisms of poverty produced through prose and a hint at stream of consciousness narration.
A mentor recommended this book to me and at first glance I wasn't sure I would like it. Then I read it within a two-hour span because the plot is tricky. One minute you get this childlike explanation of how pozole is made ("You make pozole with pigs' heads: once I peeped into the pot and the there were teeth and ears floating around in the broth. Sordid. The things I like are enchiladas, quesadillas, and tacos al pastor"), to this explanation of corpse-eating tigers:

Simple, clean prose. Outlandish, but tantalizing story. And for a ninety-page book, this is exactly how I like it.

They said it might have been suicide or murder, because she never used to go into the tigers' cage. We don't use our tigers for suicides or for murders. Miztli and Chichikuali do the murders with orifices made from bullets. I don't know how we do the suicides, but we don't do them with tigers. We use the tigers for eating the corpses.

Al principio el libro no me hab铆a atrapado del todo y sinceramente la forma en la que Tochtli se expresa acerca de ser macho, me causaba un poco de conflicto, pues tuve un novio que se expresaba igual xD.
Pero en la tercera parte fue cuando me sorprendi贸 y el final fue triste e ir贸nico pero bueno. Es un buen libro en general para entender desde otra perspectiva el mundo del narco.

It's a testament to this novella's technical proficiency that it managed to lightly tug my heartstrings over a pair of sick Liberian pygmy hippopotamuses. It's a rational little slip of a highly managed freakout, a system of recurring words/phrases that made me all the while aware I was reading fiction. That's the challenge with whimsical stuff like this, even if about corrupted innocence, even if suggestive of large-scale contemporary political corruption and historical revolutionaries. In general, I admired the writer's precision and invention and restraint, his Aira-like flexible electrical tubes of prose (see his bio), but it sort of stopped short maybe? Plus admiration and affection do not amount to love. Will start a section on my shelves with other crisp nutso-rationalities marked by corrupted innocence and freaky violence narrated by precocious and wise yet for the most part freaked-out juvies (Torsten Krol's , Agota Kristof's , Romain Gary's , and surely an Etgar Keret story or two). Fun stuff but this one felt maybe overly technical/systematic at times for me? 3.5 stars rounded down? But I'll look for more of his stuff -- a good introduction.
Also, here's a coincidence: a friend recommended this a few weeks ago and the day after I got it I saw a copy of the latest edition of "The Normal School" (beautiful lit mag from Cal State Fresno) that has a story by this author right after one I have in it. I'd never heard of him and then there we were together, page by page. Huh.

Year of new authors
Tochtli is the son of a single father and Mexican gang boss, living in opulent but lonely splendor with a personal tutor, an exotic zoo and many lovely hats. Despite being given any number of gifts and the alarming number of dismembered corpses suddenly appearing on the TV, little Tochtli is only concerned with acquring a new item for his collection: a liberian pygmy hippopotomus.
Ideal guard dog and grass cutter, or at least less likely to faint during a break in than a goat.
Written first person from the perspective of a child, Villalbos gets quite a few quirks of the childish mind bang on, from small tantrums, twisted logic through misunderstandings, an innocent literalness with the world, and an extremely aggravating habit of latching onto a specific new word and using the bloody thing incessantly, with his favourites being 'pathetic' and a homophobic slur, neither of which he fully understands.
This is a slice of a very different and unusual life, though easily identifiable despite Tochtli's innocent perspective of events, as Villalobos is hardly subtle with seemingly obscured references to corruption, gang violence and molls.
What small structure of a plot there is begins and end with Tochtli's quest for his tiny hippo (which has a weirdly happy though absurd conclusion), but this is mostly an exploration of the boys psyche as he tries to understand the violence and machismo around him. He's unsurprisingly obsessed with guns, royal beheadings and Samurai, and yet even his most bloody interests are given a rather innocent take. An example which made me smile: when discussing what could be hidden under one of his hats, Tochtli suggests the ideal gun and bullet type that would be suitable, but he also says you could fit in a baby rabbit and, because he's conscientiousness, a carrot for the rabbit.
This is one of those novellas I wish had been so much longer, as even the most vicious characters are strangely likeable. The protagonist's father, for instance, does seem to love his son despite showing it with Chernobyl levels of toxic masculinity. But asking for more is just wishful thinking, as what is here is perfectly compact, tidy and says everything it really needs to.
A wonderfully horrible little tale that you can devour in an evening. Fully recommended.

Super-short novella, more of a short story, with about 20% of the Kindle edition taken up by the introduction and glossary. It's good, though, and the brevity fits the narrative, since the narrator is a child. Tochtli is the son of a Mexican drug baron, living an isolated life in a 'palace' where he has his own zoo, a private tutor and a vast collection of hats. He knows little of the outside world, but his every whim is catered to; in the second chapter, Tochtli, his father and a companion/henchman travel to Africa to hunt the Liberian pygmy hippopotamus, an animal Tochtli has decided he wants to add to his zoo. But, despite the protagonist's privilege and his exposure to violence and corruption, this is still a story about a lonely child trying to understand his surreal, limited world. The translation is excellent, too - this really doesn't feel like a book that's been translated from another language, all the more impressive given that creating an authentic childlike voice is hard enough in any language, let alone when trying to render the nuances and colloquialisms of another. Tochtli is surprisingly endearing, but the ending - - reminds the reader that the experiences of his young life will not be without consequence. An excellent quick read, and a great introduction to the author.
