1) Very anecdotal.
2) A large fraction of examples and suggestions come from from religious texts and practices. I am not religious and was hoping for research-based advice, so this aspect of the book was disappointing.
3) There are some good tidbits here and there (hence 2 stars instead of 1), but overall the content is fairly straightforward and intuitive. I probably could've come up with 80% of the book's suggestions if I just sat down and brainstormed for 60 minutes.

I read in English but this review is written in Bahasa Indonesia

This book is a gift.
I was not expecting a reaearch-based book as others did. I knew it was more spiritual or life-coaching type of book. However, it was OK in general. The most important thing I learnt from this book is that giving has different forms, other than money and time. It made me aware of how to give differently. In other words, how much I was giving without being fully aware of that!

One of the best books I have ever read!

The book addresses the impact of giving on the recipient and the giver himself/ herself.
According to the book, you can give different things including: love, laughter, knowledge, hope, life, time, money, leadership, skills , touch, attention and advice.

The books includes six chapters (questions) every giver ( any one willing to give ) would ask:
Why give?
What can you give?
to whom should you give?
how, when, where, and how much to give?
Corporate giving.

-
The book represents every thing I have been doing and dreaming all my life. Giving is what our world needs. It makes the positive difference in your life and others'.

The book has many beautiful ideas that will make you re-consider "giving".

Quotes that I liked the most:
"True giving begins with love"
"Everyone can give something; a smile , a prayer, a good thought. Giving can be tangible or intangible"
"As you give, you get."
'You can give a little or you can give a lot"
"If you give because you want credit for you have done, it reduces the impact of giving."

I picked up this book on sale at Audible because it sounded interesting and this happens to be a year where I'm contemplating a significant increase in my giving habits.

WHAT I LIKED: The authors did a good job of categorizing different kinds of giving and pointing out that there's more than just a couple ways to give. Most people think charitable giving is about giving time and/or money, but the authors did a good job of pointing out additional types of giving and challenged the reader to consider giving in some way shape or form. One of the best pieces of information in the book was pointing out that giving a certain percentage (like 10%) may be difficult when you're making less money, but it'll be even more difficult when you're making a lot of money unless you've conditioned yourself to give early on.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Despite how it's advertised, there isn't a lot of "practical advice" or in-depth strategies in this book other than a cursory, "Here's an idea. Have you considered that before?" Also, even though this book was a brisk 189 pages, it seems like the authors didn't have enough to say to fill the pages. The book's basic premise is that you should give because it helps other people and makes you feel good... and it doesn't offer much more than variants of that same message, over and over. The element of the book I found most irksome, though, was that easily half the examples in this book are examples of the authors' own charitable deeds and successes. It seems to me that - after a lengthy introduction extolling their own accomplishments - it's a little narcissistic to constantly write about one's own accomplishments as an example of ideal behavior. I have to think that the authors could have found plenty of examples to promote and illustrate others' accomplishments rather than their own.

Overall, I'm conflicted about this book. On the one hand, embracing the idea of becoming a culture more focused on giving and less focused on taking is an incredibly important message, and the book does provide a couple of tidbits of information that could be helpful for those who are just dipping a toe into the giving pool or are looking for different ways to perform charitable acts. But the execution was definitely lacking and left me feeling a little disappointed that such an important message wasn't presented better.

I've been thinking a lot about the subject of giving over the past few weeks. I don't know if it's because it's "that time of year" or maybe because of what has transpired at work recently. I feel like I don't do enough and wanted to take a closer look at what I want to do and how I should do it.

This book was helpful in that respect. It's very much a common sense read with nothing overly mind blowing, it's very straight forward and easy to digest.

This book has given me ideas that I can apply instantly as well as concepts and ideals that I can carry forward for years to come.

I felt good after reading this book. Inspired and wanting to take action.

The reason I gave it only 3 stars is because I felt that there could have been more specifics or examples as opposed to just first person experiences.

Still, it was a worthwhile read.

I bought this book, "The Power of Giving" on sale at Unique.

I will start with positive parts, quotations I like;

1. There is always enough for the needy, but not enough for the greedy. (Gandhi)

2. People have to have a healthy economy first, but you can't eat money! And you can't make a living if there are no fish, no forests, no Nature to live on. Money can never replace our REAL necessities...(Servern Cullis-Suzuki at the age of 13)

3. It is one of the beautiful compensations of this life that no one can sincerely try to help another without helping himself. (Ralph Emerson)

The part I like best is "Giving in Hardship." When people spend time with family members at their deathbed, they feel most grateful and fulfilled. I have that experience and understand it very well. My mother has developed very serious state of dementia since July last year. I visit her every year, but the most recent visit from October and November this year brought me biggest consolation ever. I witnessed my nephew's fervent love for my mother and consoled. My nephew has lived with my mother throughout his life and taken care of my mother. I felt the passionate love in three of us, in my nephew, me, and my mother even though she can't tell who is who.

Besides those positive points, the book is generally filled with information and episodes without depth or connection. You don't become willing to help other people because you are told that it is good to help others. You need to be moved by certain philanthropic activities introduced that led other people be happy or free from their unhappy condition. But this book introduces a lot of authors' short episodes sporadically and redundantly.

This type of books could be written much more systemically based on long research, or survey and more interestingly then the books will induce or encourage people to be more interested in helping the needy.

“The Power of Giving” by Azim Jamal and Harvey McKinnon

This practical and visionary guide helps you discover that the more you give, the more you have.

My takeaways:

“We may be one person in the world. But we may be the world to one person.”

The positive impact of giving remains long after we die, as we live on in the memories and good feelings of our friends, family, and community. All else is forgotten.

When you give without expecting a return, you reap even more benefits.

Giving can reduce your fears because giving promotes social connections, which provide you with greater security.

The best way to confront your fears is to begin the process of making a difference. The root causes of “dangers” are often the result of social problems that have been ignored.

Most people only use a tiny portion of their potential and may never find their true gift or calling in life. They never find a worthwhile cause to support, a cause that means something to them and makes a difference in their lives. But things change when you give to others or give yourself to meaningful causes. You expect more of yourself. You discover new feelings of self-worth.

To find yourself, lose yourself in the service of others.

My favorite quote from the book.

Rumi, a thirteenth-century Persian mystic, told of a man who walked past a beggar and asked, “Why, God, do you not do something for these people?” God replied, “I did do something. I made you.”

Beberapa poin yang bisa dikutip dalam buku ini, antara lain;

A friend sent me this book. English is not my first language but the language, the diction is easy to understand. The content really suitable for someone who is looking for meaning. This book help us to learn more about ourself and how we can benefit others. Even the writers show how we should start our journey on the act of giving. It really suitable for mature audience to reflect on their self how they had live and how to improve it. And by giving, we are in a path of enjoying our life more and more everyday.

Azim Jamal and Harvey Mckinnon’s The Power of Giving is about the fundamentals of giving. The book is broken into very small and precise topics, giving you the option to open it up to any page and get a helpful tip on how to give. Giving is a skill, just like everything else we do. It is important to understand that like other skills, we need to work on giving to get better at it. Jamal and Mckinnon do a great job at outlining that there is more to giving than just donating money. Time, skill, advice, and love are all things we can give to each other.

The book was just inspirational in many ways other than giving. I think the purpose of this book is to go and start donating and participating in charities and start volunteering work, but I took other things instead, like some points I might fix with my family, myself, my relationships, my habits. I was bored while reading because it was repetitive, but I was like listening to an old man's advice in this life and kept reading the book.

Honestly , I’m not into this kind of books but what made me read it without even thinking twice is the fact that it inspired a reader to record a whole podcast episode to talk about the experience of giving , It took me so long to finish it due to some reasons which are sort of uncontrollable . Anyway , I did enjoyed the first two or three chapters but I felt bored as I was progressing towards the end of it .

This book expands your knowledge on “giving” when you think that this act is only limited to include a number of aspects. Instead, the act of “giving” is related and linked to cover multiple aspects that we are exposed to everyday. It’s a common thing that “giving” is linked with the financial aspect only, but in reality it’s way deeper and greater.

Interesting and simple read on giving. This text helped expand my view of what giving can look like, and provided some real examples of giving from personal to corporate levels. I likely wouldn’t reread it, but I do plan to share my copy with a friend who embodies a lot of the generosity explored in the book so that must count for something!

Nice book to spend your extra time on it, discussed ways of giving & their impacts on you. One things made my eye opens widely is that question
“what Am I giving up in order to obtain it?”

Think deeply!
