Ms Cupcake is a glamorous, fifties-styled vegan baker with a cake shop in trendy Brixton market and a bucketful of enthusiasm for delicious and decadent vegan cakes and bakes.
Her cupcakes are light as a feather, as sweet and tasty as any you'll eat, with the added benefit that many of them are, or can easily be made, gluten- and wheat-free, so almost anyone can enjoy them.
Chapters include cupcakes and muffins, frostings, cookies, tray-bakes and no-bakes, plus an extra-special chapter on deep-fried treats. Ms Cupcake brings her north American influences to the flavourings with peanut butter cookie sandwiches, snickerdoodles and fried cookie dough balls, plus she puts her own twist on British classics like her victoria sponge cake and bakewell tart cupcakes.
With fun, fifties-style photography featuring Ms Cupcake's quiffed and tattooed staff, this will be a retro treat for modern foodies, oozing Ms Cupcake's unique, larger-than-life personality and filled with useful hints, hot tips and trade secrets for vegan and food-intolerant cooks.
One of the reasons I held off giving up dairy and eggs is that I love baking.
I have made 3 recipes from this book since the beginning of the year and each one has been a roaring success with not only myself, but my sceptical partner and children.
The book gives you information on equivalent products depending on whether you are based in the US or UK.
I would recommend this book to all bakers (vegan or not!).
Great explanation on why vegan baking is slightly different from non-vegan baking. Easy follow instructions with everyday ingredients. Highly recommend ! If in London MUST stop by the shop 😋😋
Anyone else read cook books as if they're best-selling novels or just me? I was delighted to receive this as a Christmas present from my partner after I heard it dubbed "the vegan baking bible" and having tried Ms Cupcake's delicious treats in her Brixton shop years ago (RIP, sorry we didn't live closer to keep you in business by buying ALL the cakes ALL the time). Whilst I feel like I've got the knack of sourcing and making vegan meals in the past year (and a bit) since my veganism began, I've been intimidated by baking. As a post avid-baker in my vegetarian days it was something I really wanted to get back into as a go-to calming and centering activity for myself (plus: SNACKS). The book is a wonderful resource with a vast array of recipes including many "non-bakes" as I tried with my sons today in the 'Snap Bars' (a decadent take on the classically British bake sale "chocolate crispie cake") as a perfect rainy school holiday morning activity. The recipes are really accessible and for the most part all ingredients can be found in large supermarkets ("replacement" items rarely used and more emphasis on using clever raising agents or supplementary naturally vegan options) and we can't wait to get (stuck in and destroy our teeth in the process!)
At last, a vegan baking book which is for us sweet toothed British vegans. With British measurements, easily obtainable ingredients and clear concise instructions this is a book for anyone interested in baking delicious food that can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of their dietary requirements. Beautifully designed and filled with fabulous photos of both the food and the staff of Ms Cupcake's Brixton based bakery, this book is a joy to read as well as bake from. I've made four recipes so far and each one has turned out well and tasted divine. There are many more to try and I intend to bake everyone as they all look amazing.
I loved the presentation, with full colour pictures of every recipe, and attention to details. For example, all measurements are given in cups and grams depending on which you prefer.
The best thing about this book is that there are no bonkers, hard-to-find vegan ingredients (I say this as a vegan, btw) and all the recipes are achieveable from usual pantry items or stuff that you can easily find in your corner shop.
I've cooked three recipes from the book so far, and will definitely be eating my way through all of them in due course.
I've tried 4 of the recipes so far, and despite the fact that I didn't check the oven and so grilled one batch of cupcakes instead of baking - *ahem* - I am very impressed! Yum! The book looks great with lots of colour and photos (very stylish photos) of every recipe. They are not full of vegan equivalents (vegan yoghurt, vegan cream, etc.) that I don't have, though there is the odd recipe with soy cream cheese. If I had all the vegan dairy products, I'd just use a regular recipe. There's a good range of baking (cupcakes, deep fried apple pies, slices...) and I'm looking forward to trying a lot of them. I've topped up my sugar container and am ready to bake.
I have had some trouble with a few of the recipes in this, its a bit hit and miss. Also I am not a terribly big fan of huge amounts of icing and this is. I had to half the amounts of the icing for one batch and it was still WAY too much. Some really good ones though, the Victoria sponge cake is smashing. Just not as consistently good as some others.
I love this book, I got it for Christmas. I especially love the way the recipes can be adapted to suit a gluten free diet as vegan gluten free recipes are very hard to come by, especially ones that dont involve really expensive ingredients.
I have used this book many times with different recipes and they always turn out great. I have also used the recipes and adapted them to make new flavours too. They are reliable and inspiring recipes and I can not recommend this book enough.
Cute photos, great ideas, nice tricks and advices. Might be caused by German translation that the recipe I tried didn't come out too well and the author appearing like she was lacking charme.. :/
