New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author, Sarah Castille, writes contemporary erotic romance and romantic suspense featuring blazingly hot alpha heroes and the women who tame them. A recovering lawyer and caffeine addict, she worked and traveled abroad before trading her briefcase and stilettos for a handful of magic beans and a home near the Canadian Rockies.
★★★ is the first installment in 's adult romantic suspense series titled Legal Heat. It's been a long while since I read anything within this genre so I found this novel to be a fun experience combining so many powerfully sexy moments with such strong suspense. The mystery, suspense, and legal aspects bordered on an Erin Brockovich-type theme in my opinion. Greedy, powerful CEO covering up drug trial catastrophes and refusing settlements for victims. Throw in the mix: murder, death threats, a private investigator, family drama, a dominant alpha hero, and a sex club (very secondary) and you get . I enjoyed this book and thought the character development was well-done. A hero with a past causing him to be overwhelmingly protective and a heroine with a past causing her to be fiercely independent. Not a good match, right? Actually, the heat it created was scorching!
The only thing I absolutely did not like about this book was the hero's nickname for the heroine: "Sugar". It was constant and reminded me of a dirty grandpa with ill-intent. Don't know why my mind jumped to grandpa territory or why it grated on me so much but for real... I made brownies yesterday with my son and when the recipe called for sugar I was like OMG no, just no. Seriously, I don't want to hear the word "sugar" for a good, solid month hahaha!
If you like adult contemporary romantic suspense (with lots of steam) then check out . I'm excited to continue the series...ya know in a month or so :D
Note: The Legal Heat series includes the following installments as of May 2016: #1- #2- #2.5-
DNF I dont know what is it with me and miss Castille works. It seems we have miss chemistry. I can not feel the connection with her works. Legal Heat is sounds very promising. Romance, kinky sex and thriller with a hint of justice/ lawyer thing. But the more i listen to it, i found myself yawning and falls asleep.
I still pushing myself to finish it. But i just can not.
I wasn't certain what to expect from Legal Heat by Sarah Castille, but I actually got more than I anticipated!
Katy Sinclair is tasked with a case at her high-powered law firm that could make or break her dreams of partnership. There's much more, though, to this case than Katy knows. Added to that is an attraction to the seductive bartender at an exclusive sex club Katy must visit in order to track down an elusive witness. When that same bartender walks into the courtroom as the opposing counsel in Katy's big case...well, surprise would be an understatement. That bartender is also the managing partner in a struggling law firm, and he cannot afford to let Katy win this case against his most powerful client. However, the further they both delve into this case, the more dangerous things become. Feelings for one another is the last thing either of them needs, and yet there's no stopping the heart......just like there may be no stopping the killer that's after them.
I'll be very honest, there were aspects of this story that I felt were just a little too silly to be believable. Namely the sex club where a managing partner in a law firm also tends bar. However, if you're able to put that aside and focus on the mystery/suspense storyline which actually drives Legal Heat, well, then, you're in for a pretty good story!
The sexual relationship did not do much for me. I actually found myself hurrying through the sex scenes in order to get back to the story itself. To be honest, I found myself wondering if the fetish club and the sexual elements were later additions to Sarah Castille's original story. They honestly weren't needed, and it would have been a better story without them.
I really enjoyed the legal intricacies as well as the suspense in Legal Heat. That's saying something because I'm not normally a big fan of lawyers as main characters or legal cases being a major focus of a story. The case here, though, was very interesting, exciting and compelling. Obviously, given Sarah Castille's legal background, she knows what she's doing with a storyline like this one! There was just enough legal detail in the story without being mired down in it. It felt authentic without alienating those who have no knowledge of legal practices, particularly the intricacies of the Canadian legal system as the story took place in Vancouver, BC.
Two characters I very much enjoyed in this story were James (a friend of Mark's and a cop) and Lana (a new PI). James was much more my type of guy, and I hope we'll see more of him in the future.
Great job, Sarah Castille!

“Legal Heat has everything you could possibly want in a good Romantic Suspense. Intrigue, sex, death threats, sex , lust, sex, a hot attorney, sex. Yea, loved this story! Oh, and the sex wasn’t bad either!
Sarah Castille did a fantastic job of combining the right amount of intrigue, murder, drugs, smoking-hot sex and a little bit of legalese to come up with a wonderful read that holds your attention and keeps you turning the pages. You honestly didn’t know what was going to happen next who was going to turn up dead who was going to double-cross who. What you do know is that the electricity between Katy and Mark is off the charts!
Katy Sinclair is a mother of 2 with an ex-husband that just won’t quit. She threw him out after his numerous affairs and he just won’t stay away especially after his latest conquest left him. Now, he wants back into her life and she just won’t let him in. Especially after her encounter with Mark at Carpe Noctem. Life is starting to take a turn for Katy both in her love life and in her career. She just may make partner in her law firm if she nails this case against Darkon Steele, the CEO of the biggest pharmaceutical company in the world. Isn’t she in for the surprise of her life when she sees who the attorney for Mr. Steele is?
Mark Richards is one hot, sexy attorney. He’s also one of the owners of Carpe Noctem, the fetish club where he meets Katy. She’s on a case, he’s bartending. Things become extremely hot when he brings her into the wine cellar and then hotter still when they realize they are opposing counsel and can’t act on their attraction. Well, that is unless someone steps down from the case. He can’t his law firm depends on Darkon Steele and the cases he throws their way. It’s the only way they can stay afloat in this economy. But, when Katy’s life starts being threatened and the case she is building against his client starts looking like a good one, he reconsiders. He realizes that he’s falling hard for her in and out of the board/bedroom and nothing is going to stand in his way of getting and keeping her. Not Darkon Steele, not her ex-husband and not his partners. After 10 years, he’s found the right one!
Legal Heat was extremely well written. It was fast and erotic all at the same time. There was no down time and the villains in the story will have you opening your eyes wide and saying “are you kidding me? as it all unfolds. I was really impressed with Sarah Castille’s writing style and the way the book flowed from character to character, scene to scene seamlessly and without fault. I cannot wait for Book 2 in the Legal Heat series. I am so hoping that it’s going to be Tony’s story. What a hot, mysterious cop he is and I can’t wait to get my hands on him.
Well, this for me was pretty bloody BRILLIANT!!! Loved EVERYTHING about it; the storyline, the suspense, the romance... and OMG MARK!!!! *SQUEAL* The man SERIOUSLY made my panties melt. *GRIN*
CANNOT WAIT for Undercover Brief which i believe is the next book in the Legal Heat series!!!!!
Inappropriately thrilling... I'm a big Sarah Castille fan and enjoy everything she writes. Legal Heat is a suspense romance and will keep you guessing as the mystery unfolds. The chemistry between Mark and Katy is strong and it was fun to see their creative ways of getting around the obstacles preventing their relationship. But I must confess, it is Lana the redheaded sassy bada$$ PI that stole the show for me. I really hope that she and James, the dangerously handsome cop with a penchant for pain, will have a book of their own. Then...um...Tony and Trixie? There are some awesome characters that could bring us hours of reading pleasure and I look forward to the next installment.
Legal Heat was my first Sarah Castille novel but it most certainly will not be the last! To the contrary, with just a few pages into the story I was spellbound by Sarah Castille's writing and already knew that she would be an author I'd have to keep an eye on.
Before I launch into my praising Legal Heat first I must warn you: beware, this is one seriously addictive and dangerously hot story! And that was one of the reasons Sarah Castille won me over: I have read plenty of steamy romances and eroticas, so I'm not new to steaminess, but the way she wrote Mark, the hero, he oozed sexual charisma and he set fire to my ereader! Seriously can't remember any other fictional character who gave me so much goosbumps and shivers of delight than Mark, thanks to Sarah Castille's evocative writing! *mmm*
But back to the book: Legal Heat is a thrilling romantic suspense novel, a legal thriller, where the supense part gets an equal share, so don't fear there will be plenty of times and scenes for you to bite off your nails ;-) I think with Legal Heat everyone gets what they'd like, be it steamy romance, explosive chemistry, legal investigations, conspiracies, murder mysteries and so on.
Legal Heat is Sarah Castille's debut novel (and what a smashing debut!) so it is no wonder there are certain aspects which could have used a bit more polishing/stricter editing: like the characterizations: I wasn't overly fond of Kate, our heroine. I found her full of contradictions: 1) at times she was ballsy (irrationally so being a single mom with two small kids) but at other times dependent and even spineless when it came to her ex-husband, then 2) she struggled to achieve financial stability and independence from her ex-husband to be able to live and raise her two kids comfortably but she had Manolo Blahnik shoes... Mark remained quite two-dimensional, a sexy charismatic dark hero, but he retained his aura of mystery. Besides the main characters a lot of supporting charcters got introduced, some I liked better than others, but they certainly added their unique quirkiness and flavour to the story.
As for the mystery it was very reminiscent of a quick paced legal thriller movie, kept me right at the edge of my seat virtually turning and devouring the pages. There were even some twists and turns as to the details of the mystery so it kept the reader guessing until the end. (However, it left me confused how a journalist could know ALL the details of (and motivations behind) the mystery and then be the one to tell the story to the investigating detective, without having done much investigation himself...).
Verdict: Legal Heat was a captivating and addictive read. It had everything you could ask for: a terrific combo of nail-biting mystery and scorching hot romance! Sure there were some minor flaws (like how the psycho ex-husband got too much screen time or how the resolution of the mystery felt a bit rushed), but Sarah Castille spellbound me right from the start with her evocative and gripping writing and I can't wait to read more of her stories! (Thankfully her next novel Against the Ropes will be released in Spetember by Sourcebooks!)
I give Legal Heat 4 stars!
Plot: 8/10 Characters: 9/10 Writing: 10/10 so hot and sensual Sarah Castille ignited my ereader! Ending: 7/10 - was a bit too much with the psycho ex-husband and the resolution to the mystery felt a bit rushed. Cover: 9/10
Usually SC is one of my go to romantic suspense authors, unfortunately, this one was a miss for me. For one thing, some of the character's names were just to close together, there was a Ted and Tim, a James and a Jimmy and sometimes it was confusing. Even the author got Ted and Tim mixed up and that made it even more confusing. I will admit to skimming the sex scenes, they just didn't work for me. If I loved anything about this book, it was the newbie PI. She had some spunk. Otherwise, it just didn't work.
This popped at my library and thought why not. The store moves quickly giving readers a different view of BDSM clubs. Humor, sad and mystery. The book is full of spice readers who life mysteries that are full of hot sex scenes.
Katy Sinclair is on the verge of being offered a partnership in the law firm where she works. She just has to win the case she’s working on to prove herself - and that shouldn’t be too hard…or so she thought. Mark Richards is one of the best defense attorneys in Vancouver city. With the majority of law firms closing down because of the recession, he, together with his partners, is still holding on…barely. They just have to keep their biggest client happy and win his case. The case should have been a simple one for Mark but there is one thing he didn’t count on - Katy Sinclair.
Katy Sinclair is a beautiful, hardworking, conservative lawyer in one of the biggest law firms in Vancouver city. Getting where she is in her career has not been an easy task, especially now that she’s a single mom of two. She is brilliant in what she does and knows it won’t be long until she makes partner and doesn’t have to rely on anyone, particularly her good for nothing ex-husband. She is focused on finally achieving her goals and financial independence and her current case is just the ticket to achieving both these goals. In the course of doing research for the case, she ends up in a sex club and her life is forever changed.
Mark Richards considers himself the best among the best in defense law. Though he represents a rich businessman who doesn’t always follow the law, his dealings are always legal. He is honorable and won’t sacrifice his integrity for money even if it means his firm might collapse. Mark is tough but at the same time he also has a heart of gold. Plus he is a partner in a sex club which he manages with his friend. The day Katy enters his sex club, he’s drawn to her and the feeling seems to be mutual.
Katy and Mark have no idea that they will be facing off in court in a case that they are both determined not to lose. Setting aside their attraction to each other is a must since crossing that ethical line could end both their careers. Resisting each other is not as easy as they both thought as things heat up inside and outside the courtroom. With the case becoming complicated instead of winding down, will they be strong enough to deny themselves until the end or will one of them have to make the sacrifice and give up the case? The decision is not that easy as they both have other people to consider; Katy’s children and her ability to support them without any help from her ex if she makes partner and Mark has to think of his law firm and his partners. Bodies are starting to pile up and it might not be safe for either of them to remain on the case.
I enjoyed reading LEGAL HEAT, which is the first book in a series. Mark and Katy were enchanting. Seeing Katy as she begins to have sexual confidence with the help of Mark and a push from a girlfriend was great. The secondary characters totally enhanced this story as they each had different personalities. Sarah Castille did a great job of encompassing mystery, suspense and hot sexy scenes! Nothing in this story is black and white and the surprises kept hitting me in every chapter. The adrenaline rush I felt once I started reading didn’t stop until I read the last page. Highly recommend this book to those who love to read romantic suspense with some hot scorching scenes on top!
I look forward to reading the second book in the series - UNDERCOVER BRIEF coming December 2013. In the meantime, make sure you read LEGAL HEAT, which comes out April 23, 2013. 4.5 stars
audio from Tantor audio Sarah Castille is one of those authors that I always keep meaning to read. I finally had a chance to read one of her motorcycle books and it fell a little short for me. However, when I began listening to “Legal Heat I was instantly interested in the story and the characters. I loved the seductive setting that the author began with and the suspense that carried throughout the story.
I really enjoyed this audiobook and it came at a perfect time. I wanted something light, fun and interesting and this story “Legal Heat really covered all those areas. I also really enjoyed the hero and the heroine. The heroine, Katy Sinclair, is at a “pleasure club solely on business but it quickly turns to a lot more. Right at the entrance of the pleasure club she meets Mark Richards. Both Katy and Mark are attorneys and they will eventually end up on opposite sides of the courtroom. But before that, Mark thinks that Katy is at the club for pleasure, he moonlights there as a bartender with his partners. They are attorneys by day and they work at the club by night until business picks up for them. As luck would have it Mark’s biggest client needs representation. His clients are a big pharmaceutical company and Katy’s client is suing them because they unjustly fired her. There is a lot more happening than just employment law issues. It quickly turns into a scene with dead bodies and threats are made. Despite their big attraction to one another neither Katy nor Mark can afford to drop their clients.
Aside from the suspense of element of this story, and I have to say that the author had a lot of surprises along the way, Katy and Mark can’t fight their attraction to one another but this presents a legal issue of “conflict. Both love their careers and neither want to jeopardize their case but neither can avoid their feelings. Katy and Mark had excellent chemistry. They really got the best out of each other and they were perfectly matched. I also personally liked how Castille evolved Katy’s character. At the beginning she was very insecure and worried about not only her career but also her personal life- her ex-husband was a key player and Castille really had a lot of surprises in store for him. Not to be outdone with suspense and excellent lead characters Castille had equally fascinating secondary characters in James, the cop, and Lana the private investigator I loved every single scene they were in and I even ended up buying the book because I just have to know what happens between those two.
Finally, there was so much going on that I was interested from beginning to end. I could not wait to see how Katy and Mark would resolve their relationship, the villains were so deliciously bad and there were surprises at every turn. The narrator Charlotte Kane was great and her voice fit with the story perfectly. This was a fun, intense and exciting story!
“Do I look flattered? She pressed her lips together and glared. “You look hot, he murmured.
Katy Sinclair is a mother of two children, she is freshly divorced and about to become a partner in her law firm. She clearly has no time for sexual encounters but when one of her case leads her to a fetish club she can’t deny that she is curious: What would it feel like to be this bold? To have a man dominate her? Then she meets Mark, the sexy and intimidating bartender and for the first time she wants to listen to her needs. But as things get heated between them he turns her down, asks her for a drink first. She accepts but when he comes back she is gone. On Monday she has a case in court, this case will seal her future as a partner in her law firm. She cannot risk losing it because of a man. But she can’t stop thinking of her sexy bartender. Mark is a partner and his law firm is not doing so well. Their biggest client is a despicable man but in order to keep the company afloat Mark has to defend his case as best as he can. What he doesn’t expect is his opponent to be the sexy brunette he cannot stop thinking about since she stood him up last weekend. Although starting a relationship could risk both their jobs, they cannot help the undeniable attraction between them and neither one of them is gonna step back from the case.
The chemistry between those 2 was off the charts hot. The first half of the book they were teasing each other, wanting each other yet not able to do anything because of the conflict caused by their mutual case in court. Their phone sex scene was hot hot hot. I liked both characters but I didn’t LOVE them. I would have liked to see more of Katy in her role of mother. She has 2 children but it seems to me that she was never there for them. I would have liked scenes with them, to get to know them. I actually liked the plot more than I liked the characters. I just loved the intrigue and I enjoyed following the investigation, the bad guys were perfect in their roles, and the suspense was well paced.
I absolutely loved the side story between Lana the PI and Detective James Hunter. It came to a point where I was more excited to read their scenes than the main storyline! I can’t wait to read their full story in book 2. I loved Lana, I really want to know more about her. She is sassy and stubborn but she seems to be vulnerable and sweet too, and I just want to see James uncover this side of her and get all Dominant on her.
I would give 3 stars for Mark and Katy alone, but I rounded it up at 4 because of the story in itself and Detective Hunter. Yum
This is the first time I’ve read this author and I would read this author again. I won this book in a recent contest.
This was a good romantic suspense with a legal theme that I thoroughly enjoyed. There was lots of intrigue and suspense along with a hot steamy romance and two very strong main characters that I liked. The story line kept my attention, the twists surprising me. I didn’t see the end coming. This story has a bit of everything including murder, mystery, death threats, blackmail, killers, stalkers and interesting supporting characters. The author packed quite a lot into 300+ pages and it flowed well.
Katy, a lawyer, is given a high profile case which she hopes will help her make partner in the firm she works at. She is a strong smart woman with two kids and a very crazy ex that she has to juggle along with her job. She meets a very sexy man who she thinks is a bartender in a fetish club where she has gone to interview a witness and has a brief sexual encounter with him. She doesn’t expect to ever see this man again until she walks into the courtroom and finds him as her opposing counsel.
Mark, a lawyer, the managing partner in a firm, sometimes works as a bartender in a fetish club he owns with his partners. There he runs into Katy and the sparks fly between them. She leaves before he knows who she is and before he can locate her he finds himself face to face with her in a courtroom on opposite sides. Talk about conflict of interest, they skirt the edges of that minefield throughout most of the book. Mark has commitment issues, regrets, from his past that add to the drama. I like the way the relationship between these two characters developed and how they dealt with the issues they were faced with.
One thing of note, this book could have used another edit. This reader noted 13 issues that an editor should have caught; instances of extraneous words, transposed words, and missing connective words. Such issues pose a distraction to the reader causing them to stop reading while they figure out what should have been expressed.
I liked this one but for some reason not as much as I usually like her books. I would probably give it a 3.5 stars instead of just a 3. I loved the second book in this series Barely Undercover.
Ok, so.... I am so damn annoyed right now!!!! Argh!!! It didn't even occur to me that the next book in this series wasn't out yet and now I have to wait until December, December people, for it =[ NO, NO, NO! I want to read it now (stomping).
Anyway, I am sooooo excited! (I know, mood swings, I have them. A lot.) I'm just going to tell you that this book is amazing (just like Against the Ropes) and you must, I repeat, must, definitely, absolutely read it. That being said, let's move on to the reason for my excess of joy and happiness this past week. I discovered an amazing new author (that's right, just call me Columbus) who turned out to be the highlight of my week. I love finding new authors I love. Her only fault is that she is going to make me wait for the next two books, but I am going to try to make it by quoting that very famous saying, by that very smart person who once said "good things come to those who wait". And if that doesn't work, I might just have to start sending her very subtle request that she move up their release dates in consideration of my mental health. Although, fair warning, subtle has never really been my thing, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there;) Hah, I’m full of sayings today
All joking aside, I strongly encourage you to pick-up her two books. They are awesome!

I rated Legal Heat THREE AND ONE HALF leaves! This story is amazing, suspenseful, and mind-blowing. Above all of that, it is off the charts sexy! The story is about Katy Sinclair and Mark Richards. Mark Richards is a hot alpha attorney. He is also one of the owners of Carpe Noctem, the fetish club where he meets Katy when she is interviewing a client that works there. Katy just assumes that she will never see the sexy bartender from the club again, but then... Katy Sinclair is given a huge case that could help her make partner in her law firm. Mark is given the case to go against Katy, and the two are knocked off their feet when they see they will be going up against each other in the courtroom. The sexual tension between Katy and Mark was really hot, romantic, and insta-love! The first sex scene was phone sex ;-) The story was fast-paced and a real page-turner. Overall, Legal Heat was a well written, action-packed, and remarkable story that I enjoyed reading.
Katy Sinclair is a struggling young lawyer who is desperate to make it on her own after divorcing her controlling, psychotic ex. Chasing a lead on the 'make-it-or-break-it' case she's working on, she ends up incognito at a BDSM club where she meets Mark, the hot guy behind the bar, who sets her body on fire with a mere look. The chemistry between them is combustible until he turns up as opposing council on her big case.
The attraction and relationship that develops between Mark and Katy is smoking hot. And if you like it steamy, you'll like this! Mark is such an alpha who likes to take control in the bedroom - yum, yum! Katy is a strong heroine and there were times when I wanted to smack her for not asking for help, but I understood why she did what she did. Their complicated relationship could have driven the story, but Ms. Castille ups the ante in this hot tale, including lots of intrigue: corruption, murder, conspiracy, danger...Legal Heat will keep you turning the pages until the very end.
I loved Sarah Castille Ruin and Revenge . This book was good too great story but the h confused me. In the entire book she was a strong h but the way she allowed the men in her life to treat her appalled me. Why did she let her ex stay so much in her house when all he did was make her feel low, increase her stress and treat her like crap sometimes even in front of their kids. For the sake of kids was load of crap. They were divorced, so why play family? They were divorced, separated kids could have met him in his own house, just with him. Allowing time in HER house was not necessary.
Then we have H who did sexual thing with her or acted possessively then ran away saying he was sorry, rejected her but whenever he came back she accepted him in return of again sexual favor . She forgave him too easily.
I felt like, though she was strong she lacked self respect.
I received a copy of Legal Heat by Sarah Castille in exchange for an honest review. OK, I must admit that the book had a lot of, shall I say steamy scenes, but it also boasted a very good storyline with characters that were well thought out and a storyline that held enough intrigue to keep me guessing and turning the page. More than the, mature (shall we say) content, I liked Katy and her brilliance and determination balancing motherhood and being talented lawyer. I liked both her and Mark's sense of fairness for all. I would say this was a really good read.
I've been a fan of pulp detective novels and such for quite a long time, and though Legal Heat is marketed by Samhain as romantic suspense, I think it could just have easily been put into a lurid cover and sat alongside authors like Henry Kane, Ed McBain, and Dorothy B. Hughes. It kept me turning the pages, and the mix of legal thriller, murder mystery, and hot romance and sex kept me turning the pages.
I hope she writes a sequel. I'd like to know more about Det. Hunter and the redheaded PI, Lana. And if Tony got his own story too, that'd be awesome.
Katy´s got a lot on her plate, at work she´s holding a great case to show that she´s ready to move up, at home her ex-husband is trying to get back to her and using the children to get what he wants, and now her opposing counsel turns out to be the gorgeous man she almost gave in to the night before at the kinky club she found herself in. When the case turns out to be a lot more dangerous than either of them expected, they´ll join forces, but will it be enough? Contemporary romance, suspense, action and smutty fluff in a great combo.
Well I tell yah!! This was a totally thrilling read! I loved it from start to finish! The suspense was great, the chemistry between Katy and Mark was so intense! The way that the story got you thinking and trying to piece together what was unfolding, hmmmmm...... I was like sooooooo into it! Hell yeah it was a good read!!
Intense...drama filled read. This was a new author for me. I enjoyed this story. I will be on the look out for more. Especially if there is more of this in a series. I can see more stories spinning out just from this one.
Oh wow hot yummy damn sexy Mark and Katy are both lawyer's but different firms and on the same case. They meet one night when Katy goes to a club to meet a witness. Go find out the hot heat between them the sizzle and if how or when they get together
Quite an entertaining read, full of intrigue and a lot of heat. Katy is a very good lawyer who at the height of her career is confronted by the man who one night turned her body on like her now ex-husband never managed to do. James discovers that the mysterious woman who managed to intrigue him is the new lawyer he must fight to win a lawsuit from his only big client, the one who keeps him afloat. In the midst of intrigues, murders, threats, both must fight to do the right thing to avoid temptation and break all the rules and comply with their clients. I must say I expected more from Katy. She was a hard woman with James, she didn't spare him one while her ex-husband did nothing but meddle, ignore her and humiliate her as if they were still a married couple. James was a bit bipolar. One moment he was crazy about her and the next he would back down as if he would die to accept that she was the woman he had always hoped for. In between the bad guy managed to cause great damage, however, with great work they managed to catch him.
There were too many competing themes good vs. evil, love, redemption and revenge that did not seem to complement one another. This is a mystery and romance with a messy plot. Katy is a great lawyer and that’s where the protagonist’s strength ends. Mark and James were the only characters who seemed complete. The divorcée story was distracting and shallow because it was clear that we were supposed to hate the husband. The sex club component was barely explored. Overall the idea was interesting, but the story was convoluted with extraneous details that did not add to the plot. I was intrigued with the potential development of the newbie PI Lana, and I’m tempted to read the next story, but there’s no reason to rush.
