Betrayed by the ones he cherished most, and after graduating from high school with a series of heart-breaks; Black left his home and lived away with a friend of his dad's. In the grey-scale life he lived, he longed for nothing but the end of his life, until a person from the past crashes out of nowhere to re-add the contrast Black needs.

it was my first manga ever and def not the last. The characters were so real and amazing I fell in love with them so fast. and the illustrations omg they were beautifully sketched/drawn. idk what else to say but I should've picked this up earlier!
I can't wait to get my hands on next one. I RECOMMEND IT TO ANY MANGA FAN/READER.
Most fans would cringe at me shipping them. I'm well aware. But, here me out here. I'm totally, totally okay with ace relationships. Like superdudebros because I just want them to have each other and not be second best to a spouse. Okay?
I can't sleep and was scrolling twitter, looking at people's art and apparently found this.
Is this co-dependency? It seems like Black is getting more out of the relationship than White. Basically we've only get to see a glimpse into Black's life....which is in itself horrifying. Since Black has a not-so-stellar upbringing, it seeps into the way he carry himself and handles his problem. It only serves to make people wary of him.
Not White though. In a way, if White isn't strong enough, both physically and emotionally, this would be a domestic abuse case. It shows that White is there both as a peacekeeper and also to push Black to be better which I'm sure not something Black likes, much.
Looking at Black makes you go all introspective on yourself, you know. It's like you're wholly aware of your self-destruction and it's not only you paralysed watching the crash and burn but people around you who doesn't know how to stop you nor do they know how to put out the fire. Hell, they don't know where the fire is even from!
On a less serious note, the mangaka kept showing White experiencing minor headaches and here I'm hoping that he does not actually have a brain tumor or something.
And wheee, main characters are all Muslims. That's a breath of fresh air. Subtle but real.
So I don’t usually update about manga here bcs mangas ain’t books but this one is an exception!
I wanted to support the artist as much as i can!!
So here’s the story and why i started reading this despite the urge to buy physical books...
I got them as a gift, a huge fan of the story wanted me to read the manga so badly to the point she bought it for me and send it to me by email with a long cute -absolutely cute- message and... how come i don’t read it?
Thank you friend, and thank you dee for the great story!
I read this before, and reading it again made me appreciate it more. I love the art, it does improve a lot every page. The storyline is relatable and very informative, it deals with issues of abuse and neglect in a personal level with the protagonist, and it is written in a soft tone that eases you in.
It's cute, it's fun, but I was confused. Though maybe it's because I didn't know how the read manga... It was really hard for me to tell who said what, and I had trouble keeping their faces apart.
So, I don't even really read much manga, but this one appeared in my road and shattered its way through my heart in a way that's hard to put into words. "Grey is..." is a story that’s often-times breath-taking, both warm & cold, black & white and all the shades in between. It’s about the complicated and yet so strong friendship of two guys; about their troubled family situations and the way they both deal with it, alone and together. This volume is just the beginning. It introduces the mc, Black, his view on the world, his hatred for the “grey in this life, and the return of the most important thing he forgot about: his best friend, White. The visuals are built on a lot of powerful metaphors that get addressed more in the following volumes. It’s that kind of story that can be read & enjoyed even for readers that don’t like to over-analyze stuff - for its sweet interactions between characters, for its well-handled sensitive topics, for the contrast between these two themes but I gotta say, looking into the details can be very rewarding too!
The thing that makes this story stand out to me is its lack of romance *(not complete lack, but it’s definitely not the focus), honestly. Y’all are sleeping on stories without romance. This is one of the most entertaining and lovely stories that I’ve ever read specifically because of its lack of romance. It serves as a sweet reminder that sometimes all we need is a friend to hold us in the rain and tell us that we are not weak, to hold our hand, to be there.
If you like strong stories with well-written sensitive topics (beware of the trigger warnings), morally gray characters and relationships, poetic quotes, well-thought visuals, casual intimacy between besties and overall a beautiful mix of gut-wrenching angst, fights & heart-warming silly moments, then you should totally pick this one up.
Black is a designer who is all feelings, and because of that and because we live in a world very much "grey" (something he hates, something he can not understand), he has depression, angry issues and memory problems. White is an author (...sort of) who is all mind, and because of that and because we live in this complex world, he has depression, insomnia and chronic headaches. Between a heart who makes his owner's life extremely difficult and a brain who can't let its owner rest even for a millisecond. Between a white haired male who loves said colour and a male who dresses black all day every day. Which one is the good path to choose in life? Is that even a possible? How do they - children, teens, adults - achieve inner peace? How do we?
A deep and genuine friendship that everyone desires to have. Lifes who everyone considers themselves lucky to not experience.
Trigger Warnings: physical abuse, self-harm. Tags: growing up, what is grey?, friendship, family, it is not boy's love -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a story you will never forget not matter how much time passes. A story that will touch the deepest themes even you don't want to admit that exists inside you. You'll be able to relate to the characters even if you haven't gone through their specific situations. You'll see yourself in their fears, way of thinking and feeling, relationships, and so much more. will touch your soul, your phsyque. The way the author shows the characters' emotions and point of views by different metaphors and imaginaries is absolutely beautiful, realistic, touching and inspiring. I haven't found anything like these on my long long years of being a reader and i doubt i will ever again.
Started reading this on a whim, and I couldn't take my eyes off it. I love the detail put into every single frame, such as Black's different shirts and the story is really moving. I can't get this story out of my head!
I’ve been following this since it started and every single time I look back to it I feel fond of it and Black and White’s friendship. And of how the complexity of relationships with family members can be. No matter how harsh pr cruel they can be, sometimes you just can’t leave. Or even if you do there’s the guilt.
