Before dedicating his life completely to literature, he worked as theatre director and actor, lyricist and journalist. In 1986, PAULO COELHO did the pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella, an experience later to be documented in his book The Pilgrimage. In the following year, COELHO published The Alchemist. Slow initial sales convinced his first publisher to drop the novel, but it went on to become one of the best selling Brazilian books of all time. Other titles include Brida (1990), The Valkyries (1992), By the river Piedra I sat Down and Wept (1994), the collection of his best columns published in the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S茫o Paulo entitle Maktub (1994), the compilation of texts Phrases (1995), The Fifth Mountain (1996), Manual of a Warrior of Light (1997), Veronika decides to die (1998), The Devil and Miss Prym (2000), the compilation of traditional tales in Stories for parents, children and grandchildren (2001), Eleven Minutes (2003), The Zahir (2005), The Witch of Portobello (2006) and Winner Stands Alone (to be released in 2009). During the months of March, April, May and June 2006, Paulo Coelho traveled to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella in 1986. He also held surprise book signings - announced one day in advance - in some cities along the way, to have a chance to meet his readers. In ninety days of pilgrimage the author traveled around the globe and took the famous Transiberrian train that took him to Vladivostok. During this experience Paulo Coelho launched his blog Walking the Path - The Pilgrimage in order to share with his readers his impressions. Since this first blog Paulo Coelho has expanded his presence in the internet with his daily blogs in Wordpress, Myspace & Facebook. He is equally present in media sharing sites such as Youtube and Flickr, offering on a regular basis not only texts but also videos and pictures to his readers. From this intensive interest and use of the Internet sprang his bold new project: The Experimental Witch where he invites his readers to adapt to the screen his book The Witch of Portobello. Indeed Paulo Coelho is a firm believer of Internet as a new media and is the first Best-selling author to actively support online free distribution of his work.

When I first picked up the book, I compared it to Khalil Gibran's "The Profit". I was a bit disillusioned, and stopped reading for a bit. Having some time one day, I picked up the book again with the hope that I would finish it quickly and move on to the next read. How mistaken I was! The 3 chapters I read that day were directly addressing issues I was experiencing at the time!
This book is definitely one you want to read slowly, ponder on the messages and hopefully apply to your life. Its a book you want to keep in your personal library and refer back to it.

Since I first read The Alchemist, I've always loved Paulo Coelho's books. I think this book is a MUST READ for every single soul on earth no matter which your religion or believes you've got. It contains all the wisdom that should be taught in schools, instead of losing hours with stupid subjects about religion or ethics, it contains the essence of life.
The author is humboldt enough to recognise that this is not his writing, which makes him even greater than what I thought.
It is just a transcription of a manuscript found in Jerusalem, the authentic one, and there is not a single word spoiled in it.
It is a book to keep for the rest of your life in a safe place and go to when needed.
Simply brilliant.

I would have adored this book when I was 17 or even 20. But alas, I am much, much, much older than that now and less fond than I was then of books full of quotable Words Of Wisdom.
The premise of the book is poignant...the people are gathered before a time of great struggle and potential endings (and yeah, sure, it could well be a parable of our times, why not). They are of many faiths...Jewish, Christian, and Muslim, there in the lovely city of Jerusalem where in 1099 everyone is living in peacefulness and delight, apparently. But the crusaders are about to attack. (wait, don't I recall that the crusaders were Christians?? But that's okay, History is not one of the book's themes). (actually, come to think of it, the set up is like the Gita too)
Anyway, as of course any bunch of people facing destruction or battle would do, they all sit around and listen to the mysterious dude who shows up to tell them diverting stories (in 1099 you couldn't just go on FB and alert your buddies that something was up). He's known only as The Copt.
In a style kind of like that of Gibran (when I was 17 I carried The Prophet with me everywhere, told you I would have liked this book then) The Copt is asked to talk about various Big Subjects. And yes, yes he does.
Elegance,Defeat, Love, and so forth.
The Copt has obviously read the basic texts of the folks he is chatting to, because his responses are dotted with bits from Isaiah and Matthew and mostly likely from the Koran (I'm not well versed in the Koran, so I didn't immediately recognize quotes as I did those from the Bible). And he does now and then sonorously contradict himself, but hey, it's all good.
And sure, there are good wise moments in this book. The same sort of good wise moments we meet again and again in our spiritual readings and recognize once again.
Like "Enthusiasm is Sacred Fire". Or "If we are happy we are on the right road"
It's a very slender book, so it will fit nicely in the pockets and backpacks of its admirers.

The Nag Hammadi manuscripts, The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Apocryphal Gospels have been for some years a source of a salutary religious and academic debate; even, from a fiction perspective, we could include Barbara Thiering thesis of a 鈥渕arried Jesus鈥�, with kids鈥nd much else鈥�.in these debates.
BUT: somehow, Coelho managed to find another manuscript: Accra鈥檚; and this one brings nothing of salutary, in my view. It鈥檚 not a novel. Supposedly, it鈥檚 a sort of discourses of a wise man to the people.
I鈥檝e read 鈥淭he Prophet鈥� by Kahlil Gibran and found a lot of wisdom inside; not the same with Coelho鈥檚, which seems to be a sort of collage of Gibran鈥檚.
Accra's story
On the 14th of July 1099, a Greek man, known as the Copt, summons people for a meeting in a plaza king Herod once used.
It鈥檚 crusades time; French troops are of superior power. The crowd is confronted with a dilemma: leave or fight to death?. They decided to stay... and listen to the wise man.
To Ibn Al-Athir it鈥檚 year 492; to Yacob it鈥檚 4859; of course, Muslim and Jewish and Christian calendars are different. And yet, the Greek man believes in the Present moment鈥�.in the divine energy, in the Moira, the Unknown God. The multitude seeks him for answers; so they present questions: what鈥檚 knowledge?...what鈥檚 defeat?...and the defeated?...what鈥檚 solitude鈥tc.
The wise man delivers answers like: 鈥渘obody knows about what tomorrow will bring [the heck!...where have I heard/read this鈥�.already?]; as for 鈥渄efeat鈥�: 鈥渢here鈥檚 neither defeat nor victory鈥�.only movement鈥�. [I鈥檓 glad Hitler lost the war鈥nd the Allies got victorious].
Questions proceed,鈥ut answers sometimes border the obvious. That鈥檚 why I interrupted the reading of this book. Someday, who knows,鈥鈥檒l get back to it.

BUT: somehow, Coelho managed to find another manuscript: Accra鈥檚; and this one brings nothing of salutary, in my view. It鈥檚 not a novel. Supposedly, it鈥檚 a sort of discourses of a wise man to the people.
I鈥檝e read 鈥淭he Prophet鈥� by Kahlil Gibran and found a lot of wisdom inside; not the same with Coelho鈥檚, which seems to be a sort of collage of Gibran鈥檚.
Accra's story
On the 14th of July 1099, a Greek man, known as the Copt, summons people for a meeting in a plaza king Herod once used.
It鈥檚 crusades time; French troops are of superior power. The crowd is confronted with a dilemma: leave or fight to death?. They decided to stay... and listen to the wise man.
To Ibn Al-Athir it鈥檚 year 492; to Yacob it鈥檚 4859; of course, Muslim and Jewish and Christian calendars are different. And yet, the Greek man believes in the Present moment鈥�.in the divine energy, in the Moira, the Unknown God. The multitude seeks him for answers; so they present questions: what鈥檚 knowledge?...what鈥檚 defeat?...and the defeated?...what鈥檚 solitude鈥tc.
The wise man delivers answers like: 鈥渘obody knows about what tomorrow will bring [the heck!...where have I heard/read this鈥�.already?]; as for 鈥渄efeat鈥�: 鈥渢here鈥檚 neither defeat nor victory鈥�.only movement鈥�. [I鈥檓 glad Hitler lost the war鈥nd the Allies got victorious].
Questions proceed,鈥ut answers sometimes border the obvious. That鈥檚 why I interrupted the reading of this book. Someday, who knows,鈥鈥檒l get back to it.
By the way: the crowd should have left the place. It would have been wiser鈥n my view.

I really loved The Alchemist and Paulo Coelho shares deep wisdom within the story. This time the story is much more secondary as the different groups of people inside the walls of Jerusalem gather to hear the wisdom of a Greek man simply known as "The Copt." Tomorrow most will die so tonight they ask questions, make observations and listen to the Greek's wisdom. He speaks of love, life, death, regrets, family, friends, home, fear, faith and much, much more.
The book appeals to not only Christian, but also Jewish and Muslim. The wisdom is basic truisms not always articulated and sometimes loaded with a great deal of insight. It is a book that is best read slowly and processed rather than something to be read between the activities of life.

Even though the book is a philosophical fiction, it doesn't tell a particular story. It's more like a collection of fables which we can learn something valuable from each chapter.
You can open up any chapter randomly and read any according to the topic you want to discuss about.
It talks about defeat, solitude, identity, change, the meaning of beauty, love and fate, relationships, courage, family, work, luck and miracles, anxiety, the future, loyalty, enemies and ultimately hope.

The setting for this latest offering by Paulo Coelho is in Jerusalem. The date is July 14, 1099. On this date, the city was held by the Fatimids. Outside the city, the Crusaders are to make their final assault and enter the city. Most of the inhabitants of the city at this time profess one of the three Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Knowing that the Crusaders will soon attack, the people, vexed with uncertainty, are told to gather around a wise Greek simply known as the Copt. Some expected some sort of sermon; but instead the Copt wanted the people to ask questions that were troubling them. This dialogue would be set to writing or memorized for posterity. Certainly, many of them asked about what will happen the next day. But others asked some different questions about their life, love, dreams, disappointments, and fears. The book reminds me of "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran. I see this book as a continuation of his book "The Warrior of the Light". People who are expecting a novel when they pick this up, will be disappointed. But those who are willing to read through it, may benefit from some of the author's perspectives on some of life's most difficult problems.
NB According to "Al-Kamil fi'l Tarikh" by the famous historian Ali ibn al-Athir, the Crusaders slaughtered 70,000 Muslims, including women and children, who took refuge in the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

I really enjoyed Manuscript Found in Accra. This is a book that is full of uplifting, timeless wisdom. It is the type of book that can be read quickly, but it is really best read and processed slowly and revisited from time to time. I am sure that I will re-read it again in the future, so it is a welcome addition to my library.

I embarked with Paulo Coelho on this spiritual and philosophical voyage, he took me deep down into the unfathomable depth of wisdom and guided me to collect the lost pearls of human's virtue. I feel profound reverence for his philosophical insights, and the way he sees the world, the way he interprets things. This book contains twenty powerful spiritual lessons over topics like beauty, elegance, luck, loyalty, enemies, defeat, forgiveness, anxiety etc. These topics having the intellectual vision and wording of paulo coelho serve as the guiding light for those whose vision of the right path or conduct somehow distorted by the forces of evil. Strongly recommended.

Blah blah blah...
Coelho is babbling and moralizing and what not. Just like a new literary Osho with his religious-philosophical sh*t. Not for my criminal mind.
I liked some of his previous books, and there are some I didn't enjoy. Whether this is worst of his books I can not say, but it is worst I've read.
But those who consider Coelho some kind of religious leader or messiah and admire and believe in everything he says will certainly love it.

I felt like book was trying to be too much at once and as a result, it was not as successful as it could have been as a fictional STORY or a well-being/self-help book.
I began with the impression that this would be some historical fiction/history re-write and in some ways it is. I particularly enjoy how each chapter is an answer to a question - very parable-like, and it takes a narrative tone that the Bible has in many instances. However, there are no real characters that carry over chapter to chapter, who we get know, and who develop in some way. It is just a narrator dispensing life advice and wisdom to a crowd. If I had known this book was going to be some Socratic/Jesus mash-up, I may have been less disappointed - but about as equally impressed (which is not much).
As a work of non-fiction, well-being, or modern day pseudo-political philosophy book; it's rather disorganized, not very clear, and gratuitous with the examples (too many 'stories' that actually dilute the lesson rather than make it stronger).
To me, this book is having an identity crisis. It has redeeming qualities: some genuinely thought provoking concepts and ideas - but none that haven't been discussed before in a more effective medium or narrative voice.

A beautiful, simple and enjoyable novel, a new and beautiful style by the writer Paulo Coelho in the way he narrated this novel. The author did not leave his beloved region, the Middle East, this time from Jerusalem, the historic city that has witnessed many, many historical events throughout the ages.
Gemayel in this novel that he used a new character in the manner of narration, about a city days after the occupation and there is a great war and fate unknown, and the people of the city accept this fate and there meet and accept advice and questions from the Coptic man who speaks with them in a very wonderful way and in which all the lessons Good speech and advice, even the current human being can benefit from it and learn from these events, but only have to focus on dialogue and dialogue in the novel.
The most interesting thing about the novel is the end, especially when he finished speaking and the three men spoke after his speech very wonderful thing.

Read by Jeremy Irons, Paulo Coelho's book, Manuscript Found in Accra (pronounced a CRA) is more than a book. It is a contemplation on human values that have endured the passage of time.
The story is told through the eyes of the Copt. It is 1099 in Jerusalem and the Crusaders are at the gate. The Copt has summoned the townspeople to address their fears. He talks of many things: defeat, struggle, the nature of the enemy; they contemplate the will to change and the virtues of loyalty and solitude; they ultimately turn to questions about beauty, love, wisdom, sex, elegance and what the future holds.
This is a book well worthy of a re-read (or in this case a listen followed by a read!!). On the second go-around, I will take each subject and provide one quote.
To get us started, I will include one in this preliminary review.
DEFEAT. Only he who gives up is defeated.

It's amazing to think how many manuscripts such as these were lost to us generations ago--that many scholars' thoughts and advice are lost to the ravages of time.
In 1099, the mysterious Copt is speaking to a crowd awaiting attack. In the face of death, the Copt shares his views on life. Some ask if they shouldn't instead be focused on preparing for battle, to which Copt replies, "Our task is not to leave a record of what happened on this date... history will take care of that. Therefore, we will speak about our daily lives, about the difficulties we've had to face."
He then answers a series of questions about everything from defeat, solitude, self-worth, and fear to beauty, our path in life, and love.
So many of the Copt's answers spoke to me, and this book has been dog-eared, starred, highlighted, and shared. I know there will be days I will turn to it for strength and encouragement. Some highlights:
Help us to understand that wisdom lies not in the answers we are given, but in the mystery of the questions that enrich our lives. p135
Therefore, although anxiety is a part of life, never let it control you... If it tries to persuade you that taking on lots of jobs means having a productive life, say: "I need time to look at the stars in order to feel inspired and to be able to do my job well." p145
Never miss an opportunity to show your love, especially to those close to you, because we are always at our most cautious with them for fear of being hurt... Love does not need to be understood. It needs only to be shown. p153
We all face times in our lives where the questions seem to outweigh the answers, a time where we are searching for wisdom. This book touches on so many of the topics that hold most of us back from becoming our best selves. It's a quick read, but it's packed with life-affirming and life-altering advice.

August 23, 2020J'avais le choix entre ce livre et Osho's "Emotion", mais, le titre de Coelho a 茅t茅 un facteur d茅terminant dans mon choix . Cependant, un guru est impliqu茅 dans le deux.
Le livre d茅bute par une avant-propos, qui nous raconte la d茅couverte des c茅l猫bres manuscrits, connus sous le nom d' " 脡vangiles apocryphes ", autour desquels nombreuses controverses ont surgi. L'茅glise s'est empress茅 de cataloguer leurs - h茅r茅sies, mais, leur contenu 脿 d茅clench茅 des rumeurs parmi de nombreux croyants, alimentant leurs questions, mais aussi leurs doutes.
La relation continue avec un autre manuscrit,auquel Coelho fait appel,pour commencer son histoire.
En 1974, un texte en arabe, h茅breu et latin a 茅t茅 d茅couvert 脿 Accra, par un arch茅ologue anglais,dont le fils 脿 remis une copie 脿 l'auteur en 2011. Ce manuscrit n'est pas seulement le titre du livre de Coelho, mais aussi un s茅rie de r茅flexions que l'auteur tente de reproduire 脿 travers son personnage, - Coptul. C'est le protagoniste 茅cout茅 avec int茅r锚t pour les autres ,comme un sage qui a r茅ussi 脿 茅lucider le sens de la vie. Coptul semble avoir la r茅ponse 脿 tout, et le lecteur est libre d'interpr茅ter par lui-m锚me, libre de choisir ce qui lui convient.
Coelho me semble 锚tre en recherche permanente d'un certain style.
Ce que j'ai trouv茅 dans ses livres sont, en fait, les m锚mes enseignements,v锚tus de v锚tements diff茅rentes, mis en sc猫nes diff茅rentes, et avec d' autres personnages .
En ce sens, je recommande non seulement ce livre, mais aussi "L'alchemist' et " Aleph".

Pure wisdom
I have always loved Paulo Coelho鈥檚 books; they are so concise in a great way, so beautiful but challenging. He is simple but profound and his histories will make you rethink your whole world. Because all of that, I expected 鈥淢anuscript found in Accra鈥� to be great. And it just鈥� is. As other Coelho鈥檚 books, it takes you to another world and the story surrounds you in a beautiful way. You can鈥檛 stop reading and you see yourself immersed in a charming but deep history.
We live in a very changing world, and 鈥淢anuscript found in Accra鈥� just goes back to the beginning. I really appreciated that while I was reading, and I felt again that magic, like when I was 16 and I read 鈥淭he Alchemist鈥�. That magic is exactly what makes books great. And this new book makes you think about some of the most basic things of your life and your world. It is original but structured, easy to read and inspiring. As Paulo Coelho usually does, the new book is not very long, but it鈥檚 precise and intense, and it just gets to the point. Because it鈥檚 easy to read, I would recommend read it even twice! Some quotes and some sentences are so thoughtful that I would say that the whole book requires re-reading.
Indeed, the plot, the quotes, the philosophy behind it鈥� everything makes it just simple but at the same time magnificent. I couldn鈥檛 stop reading. It was just pure wisdom. Highly recommended.

Judging by the quotes I've seen from some of Coelho's other work, philosophical and mindful ways of living are his wheelhouse, and perhaps Manuscript in Accra is a condensed, more direct version of those ideas. I would have to read his other books to say so with any certainty. Maybe this book isn't for everyone, but I liked it well enough to want to properly devour a full-on Coelho novel in the near future.
