Very readable and easy to understand, but I was bit bored by the second half of the book. The many names of films and people confused me, being someone who likes documentaries but has never seriously thought about them before besides really liking "Documentary Now!" mockumentaries. The history and different philosophies of documentary film-making was very fascinating, though.

while about to start writing a master thesis on documentary, I found this small pocket book on the library shelf. It was the perfect choice to start with, very easy and fast to read, gives the best introduction, definition, criticism, genres, subgenres, what is missing in the academic research and of course what to read next that is worth it...

From overwhelmed with chaos of ideas and many books to read, this book put me right on track and made planning easy..

I wish to see a second edition that includes the development of the Documentary film since 2006..

The first part of this book is a fascinating glimpse into the various, contradictory philosophies adopted by different documentarians and the evolution of the social context in which they are used. Splendid! However, the second half of the book is a rather muddled run-down of a hundred or so documentaries both famous and obscure which tries to categorize them into the slots presented in the first half, which is both a fruitless exercise and at the expense of an actual discussion of each documentary itself which is what I would have wanted. Althogh it did inspire me to go and try to see some of these classic documentaries, I realized only after much searching that all the documentaries I had never heard of are in fact very difficult to get one's hands on and only exist in specialized film collections, often in film form. While this is not the author's fault per se, the book neither warned me about this nor gave any suggestions (beyond netflix) on how I might go about trying to screen these classic films.

Sadly, documentary film is a genre prone to didactic moralism and the hubris of societal improvement.

Started reading this book since reading previous "A very short introduction" books have offered background information for understanding the field and thou my aim was for ethnographic documentary productions, it also satisfied other curiosities in the process.

The book I read to research this post was Documentary Film A Very Short Introduction by Patricia aufderheide which is an excellent book which I bought from kindle. Documentary film can probably be traced back to the 1922 film Robert Flaherty's Nanook Of The North which wasn't a documentary in the strictest sense because Eskimos who were quite up to date and one of them even fixed the movie camera had to hunt walrus with a spear like in the olden days for the purposes of the film. He also made a similiar film in Samoa again getting natives to use old hunting methods. Nanook was inspired by what we might call a docu-drama Birth Of A Nation in which the birth of America was told using actors to portray factual scenes. That film was hugely successful and was made by DW Griffiths on a relatively huge budget. Another very successful documentary film was Night Mail in which the route the mail takes over night was put to film with commentary by the poet WH Auden & music by Benjamin Britten. The most successful documentary ever is probably Fahrenheit 9/11 which sets out a case against the war in Iraq & is about George W Bush's presidency. Many right wing people claimed the film was propaganda and it's maybe only showing one side of the argument. In Britain the birthplace of documentary film there has been the long running documentaries World In Action & Panorama which did commision documentaries of a high standard. In Britain unlike many other countries the television companies are independent of any political control although this type of film is declining. One of the best documentaries of recent years was March Of The Penguins showing a year in the life of penguins but maybe ignoring global warming and the fact penguins only mate once in their lives. My favourite film of all time is a noted documentary called Shoah where it is the definitive film about the concentration camps during World War 2 but was criticized for sometimes using hidden cameras for reluctant interviewees and restaging interviews for the camera. I really enjoyed this book & it is a very interesting subject.

I bought this book as someone who's interested in documentary films. It wasn't a bad choice from this perspective. Indeed, it's a book for beginners who seek preliminary knowledge about documentary film evolution. The book, unexpectedly, turns out to speak about the cultural impact of documentary film. I recommend it to students of media studies and cultural studies. For people who are interested in the technical, lucklessly I'm one, the book has nothing of that sort. Patricia, as I have seen through her videos on YouTube, is more interested in the relationship between the viewers and the products (films). The introductory chapter is very interesting, I found. The rest of the books is merely a repetition of the first chapter with more elaboration.

A decent primer on the history of documentary filmmaking setting up Flaherty, Grierson and Vertov as the key triangle of pioneers. Written in 2006 this is already very out of date in many ways because it only flags up the impact of the Internet on documentary-making without really getting to grips with the implications and realities.

I read this book after reading an obituary of Eleanor Coppola, who famously filmed an award winning documentary about the making of Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam war movie, Apocalypse Now. The author discusses a wide variety of different genres of documentary and how different film makers address the question of how to present a "true story" to audiences and which film techniques are successful at conveying a sense of authenticity. There is a strong global range to the chapters and I was impressed by the amount of time devoted to discussing key figures and films from the National Film Board of Canada. I have seen a number of the documentaries discussed in the book including March of the Penguins, Ken Burns' Civil War and the 7 Up series but there were also some more obscure titles discussed in the text.

I think 3 stars works for "A Very Short Introduction." How much can really be squeezed into the format. That aside, it was as comprehensive as it could be for the space allowed. A very brief history of the form with definitions and examples. Variations, examples of films that abandoned or adopted the label. Of course, a list of sub-genres with the goals of each and examples.

This was my first go with something from this series and having academic and practical experience in film, this was a lot of stuff I've encountered before but it's nice to see in concise volume for those who would want, well... a very short introduction. I'd be curious to check out something else in this series on something I'm less familiar with.

Having read a number of these very short introduction books on film subjects this is the weakest one as it tries to stand everything together into different schools of approach so your zipping from the silent era to the mid 2000s and back again.
I would also argue it's far to American focused to offer very much of real worth.

A wonderfully short introduction to documentary film, crisp, clear and comprehensive. A must read for all who wish to venture into the ocean of film making, particularly documentary film making. The list of documentaries and references are of great use.

Sure, it may be a short introduction, but what an introduction.

Succinct, yet deep. Explores the history of documents films in a fascinating manner.

Love the continued mention of Australian documentarians. If there's one area that Aussie films succeed and are prolific in, it's docs.

Very informational. Defiantly gave me a different view of documentary and helped me identify it as an art rather than a technique.
