Documentary Film: A Very Short Introduction

I read this book after reading an obituary of Eleanor Coppola, who famously filmed an award winning documentary about the making of Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam war movie, Apocalypse Now. The author discusses a wide variety of different genres of documentary and how different film makers address the question of how to present a "true story" to audiences and which film techniques are successful at conveying a sense of authenticity. There is a strong global range to the chapters and I was impressed by the amount of time devoted to discussing key figures and films from the National Film Board of Canada. I have seen a number of the documentaries discussed in the book including March of the Penguins, Ken Burns' Civil War and the 7 Up series but there were also some more obscure titles discussed in the text.
