Sixteen-year-old Iris Capaldi led an entirely ordinary life before the accident. There were no make-out sessions with her best friend, Benji. No homicidal skinheads. No unexplainable flying creatures. And no ridiculously cute, teenaged aliens. Since the accident, however, the bizarre has become the ordinary. It’s an unusual day if she’s not kissing Jamen, her extraterrestrial classmate, arguing with her impulsive, dead mother, or almost dying herself.Ìý
Suspenseful, insightful and fun, Iris effortlessly blends love, loss and the paranormal in an unpredictable teen romance that will enthrall fans of The Hunger Games and Twilight, as well as anyone drawn to the endless possibilities of first love . . . no matter how extraordinary the circumstances.

Iris is a romantic drama that takes a closer look at the relationships between friends and family. The author does a fantastic job of developing the characters and the relationships between the characters. Even though the book involves the aliens and the supernatural, the author develops the plot in such a way as to make the story seem totally plausible. I am usually not a fan of science fiction. However, after reading this book, I am finding myself seeking out more science fiction. This book is the perfect combination of romance, drama, and science fiction. I found myself hoping the book would never end. I really hope the author writes a sequel!
IRIS was an action-packed story which combines ordinary teenage life, tragedy, and aliens in an interesting mix. Iris Capaldi - called Mia by her friends - is an ordinary teenager. When the story begins, she is eagerly anticipating getting her driver's license since it is her sixteenth birthday. Her best friend is her next door neighbor Benji. They hang out together all the time. She loves her quirky, hippie mother and they get along just great.
But shortly after getting her license and when Mia is driving, she and her mother get into a car accident and her mother is killed. Mia has to go live with her older brother Daniel and his girlfriend whom she does not like. She is awash in grief and depression and considers killing herself but is saved by a strange creature - enter the aliens.
When she starts her new high school, she meets Jamen who is a transplant from Idaho. The two become fast friends and Mia develops quite a crush on him. Mia also develops an interest in aliens and is determined to investigate. She convinces Benji to go with her to downtown Detroit to visit a group she found on the web. She doesn't find them but she and Benji do run afoul of a human predator and are saved by still another creature.
During Thanksgiving Break with her spacey aunt in New York City, Mia and Jamen are hanging out in Central Park when they are attacked again. In order to save Mia, Jamen has to admit that he is an alien and transform into an alien creature to defend her. He also confesses that he has been sent to Earth to protect her from another of his fellow aliens who had been in love with her father.
I liked Mia's voice and her resiliency. Though she had all sorts of difficult situations to overcome, she managed to come through. I loved how realistic Mia was. I loved her relationships with her mother, Benji and her older brother Daniel. About 85% into the story, I told a friend that I thought her relationship with Jamen was doomed though. I was right but the reason it was doomed wasn't at all what I thought it would be.
Fans of science fiction and romance will enjoy this story.
I received the kindle version of this book in exchange for my honest review.
And honestly, Iris is terrific. I've read through a bunch of the reviews for this book, and I agree with so much that's being said. The writing is poetic in moments, and so full of heart. It's so easy to get lost in this fantastical story, but the author somehow keeps you grounded in what feels like reality, even though the circumstances are far from reality.
I've got an 11 year old and a 14 year old, both girls, and I like to read all the YA books they're interested in before they get to them. I don't like overly violent books directed at the younger markets. Iris has some intense moments, particularly at the end, but I have no problem having both my girls read this book. It's got an innocence to it that I appreciate. Yes, it's a love story, but Mia is a wonderful role model of how to approach relationships and boys at that age. She's thoughtful and respects herself. She's independent but still insecure in moments. She's confident but overwhelmed. She's a terrific protagonist. Benji and Jamen are also wonderful characters. Kind and respectful teenage boys (well, Jamen's not exactly a boy...) who are easy to root for, rather than root against.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the paranormal/alien element. It's incredibly engaging, and I particularly like the shape-shifting. Some people have mentioned the music, and I completely agree. If there ever is a soundtrack for this book, I'll be first in line. A teenager girl who loves Zeppelin and the Stones. Fantastic.
I think the part of this book that touched me the most was Mia's relationship with her mother. I don't want to give anything away, but Mia is forced to deal with some very intense grief throughout the novel, and it's handled so beautifully and honestly. I loved watching her struggle to find any sort of peace with her loss.
I think Iris is worthy of five stars. It's a special book, and I applaud the author for bringing so much heart and emotion and excitement and suspense to one story.
I loved this book.I am so glad I decided to read and review this book, it was so worth the time. This book felt like and breath of fresh air. I honestly haven't read anything like it before and it felt new, fun and exciting. I was curious from the very first chapter and I really wanted to know Iris's story.
One of the best things about this book is that the characters feels like real people. Iris is sixteen and you don't confuse her with an adult. Sometimes I think authors forget that they are portraying teenagers in their YA books and not grown-ups. I don't know how many times I've read a YA romance where the main characters are so mature you start to wonder if you got the age right in the beginning and have to flip back to that page just to reassure yourself that this is indeed a sixteen year old girl or boy you're reading about. Well that is not the problem in this book and I like it, a lot. Iris also react kind of healthy to the fact that her new crush isn't actually human. She think it's kind of weird and doesn't really want to be around Jamen for a while. So i think we have established that I totally dig Iris right?
Then we have the drama, the relationships around Iris.We have Iris's best friend Benji who isn't exactly honest with her about how he feel about their friendship. Then enters the new and exciting Jamen and Iris has her first crush on a boy that kind of puts a little tension in the Benji-Iris duo. To complicate it further Benji starts to date and that makes Iris kind of jealous. This whole Drama around Iris and Benji is so real life somehow and that just makes this book so much better.
The story itself was also really good and it was kind of hard to put the book down. This book does have it's terrestrial elements yes but it also deals with friendship, love, betrayal and secrets. It's an awesome read and I loved this book so much. And the way it ended makes me wish and hope for a second book perhaps? So what are you waiting for? Go out and buy this right now!
Iris was a little slow starting for me but once you get in to the story Stabile tells us a wonderful tale of shape-changing aliens, first love and tragedy.
Mia, also affectionately named Iris, is an average teenager with a hippy single mum and a best friend called Benji. She loves classic rock from an era before she was born and considers herself to have exceptional taste in music. Benji can play guitar and sing and they love to dress up and rock out. They are geeky but don't suffer the usual bullying or problems that come with the title. They are happy......until an accident changes Mia's life and throws her in to an entirely new world of strange creatures, visits from ghosts and aliens. The accident meant moving to a new city to live with her older brother and his self absorbed girlfriend, starting a new school and making a new friend, Jamen.
Mia thinks Jamen is cute but strange, he is what she and Benji call 'a walking wikipedia' but he has a secret and isn't at all what he seems. Watching Mia handle his true self and his lies pulled at my heartstrings. She falls for him hard, despite what he is.
The ending of this book kept me riveted and I enjoyed the secrets, the betrayals and the action. Mia is a refreshing protagonist, she deals with her changing world, she adapts to it, accepts it and is strong. She fights back! She is no victim.
My only issue with this book was trying to determine the age it was suitable for. At the beginning I considered it a very young book, then with the odd swearword I thought more 12+. Towards the end the F-bomb was dropped so I am not sure if its aimed at older teens. Either way it was a fun, enjoyable book if you are in to aliens.
I’ve been dabbling with a secret obsession YA novels. Reading The Hunger Games and The Good Thief take me back to my own sense of adventure and curiosity of the world and lessons about justice, loyalty and friendship.
I admire the way certain writers can tap into that innocence we all had once without playing up the naivety. I’m always impressed when a male author can capture the essence of his female characters in a way that feels true. I like the character of Mia a lot. She’s fiery and thoughtful and smart, but also a clueless teenager when it comes to things like love. In some ways, I think Stabile only touched the surface of what we will experience with her in later books. At least I hope so. I loved this book. Aliens, angsty, wondering, teens and lots of action what’s not to love? I liked how the author used Jamen to comment on our society without it feeling like a brick to the head. It totally worked with his character.
It’s a far out adventure filled with lots of craziness and lots of love, but it’s a lot of fun to read. I hope book two comes out soon!
I instantly connected with Iris (the character), I remember waking up on my 16th birthday, so excited about being able to drive. It also helped that the Iris was set in a time period that I actually grew up in, so I got all the references (knew the bands and songs mentioned). I even cried after the crash and when Iris was going through her grieving stage. I have to admit that my favorite parts are once she meets Jamen and figures out that he is an alien (and that she is not going crazy). Again, I cried at the end, I won't give away the ending, but just beware that it is definitely a tear jerker.
I felt that this was a good Young Adult book, not a lot of violence (mainly one scene at the end) and the romance was very chaste (just some kissing), so it would be appropriate for the younger teens to read. I am looking forward to reading the next book (assuming that there is one) to see where the story goes from here.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll shake your head and ask why.... is this book over?! I wanted to keep reading!
Seriously though, Iris does a spectacular job capturing the bittersweet time that is teenagerdom. From first loss to first love to that awkward unrequited crush, Iris captures it all. Plus aliens. Lots of aliens, actually. And ghosts. And awesome music. And a badass heroine who can still crack a joke (sorry, Katniss). And finally, a crazy twist ending that will turn everything on its head.
If you're into crazy teenage romance, you'll love this.
If you're into wacky funny sci-fi, you'll love this.
If you're human and have a heart, you'll love this.
If you're an alien, you will want to read this book for science, and you'll also love it.
If you don't fall into any of those categories... you will still probably love this book. So get it on your kindle and start reading today... because you never know what tomorrow's going to bring you.
Honestly, I loved this book. I received it in the mail and had it read before bedtime. There was so much of the things that happened in the book that I did not expect, and that unpredictability made it addicting to me. Its also an emotional roller coaster of tragedy, love, and understanding. Its open minded, funny, and entertaining. It relates to me through the mentions of things love such as other book series, music, and simply through the thoughts of the Iris. The fact that it involves aliens just sets it completely apart. It definitely is not like any other alien book I have read in a very good way. It had me captivated through every moment of happiness and every moment where you feel like the bottom has fallen out. It left me wanting more.
Can I just say that Mia has the most amazing taste in music. I love her attitude towards it and everything in between. The love interest, to me, was a bit sloppy. I feel that love triangles are over done and just need to stop. Yes, it's not a normal love triangle, but it's still a triangle. I also think that the action was a bit too fast and unexpected. Of course, those are the best kind, but one moment everything is fine and then all of a sudden, OH MY GOD A FLYING (insert crazy thing here). It just got annoying. I'm being completely honest here, after I finished reading this, my mind kept wandering towards Jamen. Call me crazy, but hey, it's better than Edward Cullen. I would actually pick up the sequel just to know what happened to Jamen.
I have so many good things to say about Iris. It's making its way through my group of friends, and I read it by my friend's recommendation. In one day! It's an incredibly easy read, because it's such a good story you don't want to stop. Kind of like Hunger Games that way. You just keep turning the pages, and suddenly an entire day has passed and you've finished the book. Mia, Jamen and Benji are fantastic characters and it's impossible for me to pick between Benji and Jamen. I loved the relationships between all of them. The paranormal element is amazing. Shape-shifting aliens are the coolest! This book has a bit of everything. Tragedy and love and suspense and action. The ending is crazy and totally unpredictable. Edge of your seat stuff. And I LOVE the cover. Iris rocks!!
I read Iris last week and am still thinking about the novel a lot. There's a way in which Stabile writes that truly touched my heart and warmed my soul. Mia is a courageous and positive teenaged protagonist, with intelligence and insecurities and curiosity that I think we can all relate to. This book has a bit of everything. It's tense and suspenseful but also romantic and moving. There are some profoundly sad moments handled with grace and and respect, and many harrowingly tense moments handled with the skill of an action writer. The love stories are both sweet and unpredictable and I found myself rooting for both guys and equally drawn to Mia's relationships with them both. I think Iris is wonderful. I'm sure this is a book I'll read again, maybe even soon.
Amazing book! My friend and I read it at the same time and we both totally loved it. I pretty much want to be Mia, and not just because she can rock out on the guitar, even though that's so cool. She's just a total individual but with crazy problems to deal with, and she deals with them the best way she can. She basically kicks butt in so many ways. This book has crazy alien action, the shape shifting is super cool, and I totally loved the love story. I have to admit, I'm a bit more of a Benji fan. I loved this book so much. Way better than Twilight! The ending is nuts! I was so tense and really didn't want it to be over.
I won this book as part of a giveaway. When I first started reading it I wasn't sure that I liked it. It wasn't what I was expecting. Now that I've finished reading though I have to say that it was amazing!! The second I finished all I could think was if he would make a sequel. The way it ended made me want to know what happened next. All I can say is if there is I would definitely buy it. So if you get a chance to read Iris do. You won't regret it. I know I don't.
Probably more a 3.5, but I can't give half stars. Solidly written and all, just really not for me.
It was... a pretty solid book, in most respects, but there was some science fail that wasn't even handwaved, that kind of annoyed me a bit, and some of it felt, well, a bit cheesy and trite.
Probably a good book for the kind of person who likes "teen romance" type story lines, and is willing to ignore a few blatant violations of the laws of physics
Iris is my new favorite book but maybe because I just read it. It is A.W.E.S.O.M.E. Mia is crazy cool and I seriously want to be her. Couldn't put this book down once I started it. Seriously, I practically read it all at once. It's so good and full of crazy stuff and cool aliens, and Benji and Jamen are both amazing. I felt everything in this book, all the emotions. I laughed and cried and was nervous. The relationships feel totally real and I really hope there are more books to come. Please!!
I received a free copy in the mail and let me just say it's beyond awesome! I connected with the characters, and it was amazing to go through the book with them. I remember after I turned 16 going to get my license, I was ecstatic! The grieving process isn't drawn out in my opinion, it makes her seem so realistic! Definitely worth it to read!
I have cried, bit my nails off, laughed and then cried some more ! Scott has such a way with words that you forget where you are while you read Iris. I loved the original characters in Iris the vivid descriptions of them made it easy to "see" them. Iris deserves no less then 5 stars I love the plot and the characters.
Well, being deceived like that after losing not only her mother but her friend too would've broken most people, not to mention the whole alien weirdness. Such a strong girl. I want to be like her when I grow up. Just not go through what she did
